Greetings!
Dear Families,
Welcome to a new school year at
Lyman High School. Based upon
your student’s needs, he/she has
been enrolled in an Intensive
Reading class. At each grade
level, Lyman has implemented
research-based programs to
facilitate optimal student growth
and improvement. The Reading
Department teachers are looking
forward to sharing valuable strategies and skills with your student
which will prepare him/her for success with the Florida Standards
and the demands of college and/or
the workplace. Our teachers receive ongoing professional development and enjoy sharing their
enthusiasm for reading which
translates to life-long lessons. In
each of our programs, we incorporate young adult novels as well as
complex texts alongside multimedia to meet the needs of all types
of learners.
Instructional Coach
With the implementation of these
new standards, the reading classes will also be infusing more
writing into the curriculum. Reading provides the opportunity for
students to open a door or look in
the mirror: exploring a new world
or seeing a new reflection of
themselves. In order to provide
this experience, our department
continually reviews current trends
in adolescent literature and
makes selections based on high
interest and rigorous content. We
encourage you to recommend
books to your child and ask him/
her about the books he/she is
reading. Newspapers, magazines and even online sports
articles represent opportunities to
practice comprehension skills in
the real world. Reading is a
social activity, so the more
students talk about the readings,
making connections and asking
questions, the better they under-
stand what they have read.
Please do not hesitate to contact your student’s teacher,
Department Chair, or the Instructional Coach with any
questions or concerns you may
have. We look forward to
working with you this year and
celebrating the academic successes of your child at the end
of the year.
Educationally yours,
Lyman High School

Reading Newsletter, Syllabus, and Parent Permission Slip
Parent Permission Slip:
Dear Parents or Guardians,
Your student will have the opportunity to read a selection of novels addressing issues and concerns that teenagers may encounter. One of our goals as a Reading Department is to motivate and engage students in the
reading process by choosing materials that they will want to read as well as applying critical thinking in
complex texts. Reading should be an active process, not a passive one. The topics within some of the selected texts may include but are not limited to:
• Relationships between parents, students, and peers,
• Substance abuse and rehabilitation,
• Choices and consequences,
• Abuse
• Depression, bipolar disorder, and/or other mental health concerns
Please refer to the novel selections in the newsletter if you would like to research the text on your own. We
encourage you to take this opportunity to discuss these issues with your student. If you are uncomfortable or
would like further explanation of the material, please feel free to contact your student’s teacher. If you
choose not to have your student participate, we will be happy to provide a traditional, alternate novel.
*These books are intended for adolescents ages 14-20; they are not adult novels, however we would like to
caution you that these novels may include explicit language and descriptive details.*
Educationally yours,
Lyman High School Reading Department
