In late May there was a fire
at a condo complex in
Edmonton. As a result of
this fire many people lost all
of their possessions and
those who could get to their
suites were told they had
only 30 minutes to gather
their belongings. In all
likelihood the building will be
demolished, as it is now
unsafe to live in. This fire
was started on the balcony
of one of the suites. A
tenant had a diaper pail out
there and it was used to
dispose of a cigarette.
An innocent mistake that
will cost millions of dollars to
the building owners and the
tenants. The Fire
Department in Edmonton
noted that it was not
intentional and basically
someone just didn’t
understand the risk they
were taking by disposing of
a cigarette like this. This is
why we are changing our
smoking rules in the
apartment programs. It is
so easy to accidently start a
fire with a cigarette.
Another classic fire was
started in Canmore at a
PIPER CREEK FOUNDATION senior’s self-contained
building in much the same
way, someone butted out
their cigarette in a planter
that was near the front
door. This too resulted in
millions of dollars of damage
and people were homeless.
It was not intentionally
started or with malice in
mind, a person just needed
to dispose of their cigarette
and did it in a way they had
probably done for years.
I know many of our
residents are upset that we
will be instituting a no
smoking rule in all buildings
this fall, but as these
incidents show, it’s innocent
mistakes with cigarettes
that so often lead to fires.
Please work with us in
finding appropriate areas
outside for people to smoke.
We want them to be safe
from the elements and not
create a risk to the building.
This is a time for us to all
work together to ensure
everyone is safe.

DENISE’S DEN. . .
Hi Folks,
The theme this
month is ‘Food
for Thought’,
the challenge
for June is
Eating Healthy.
Do you ever wonder where some of
these idioms come from? I looked it up
on the internet and it’s an expression
that’s been around since the 19th
century. It is referring to a thought or
idea that is worth careful consideration.
We are all aware that eating healthy is
good for us. It’s putting it into practice
that can be hard. If you’ve had a weight
problem all your life, it takes more than
just willpower to lose weight.
If a person can stay away from the
prepackaged food, which has a lot of
unnecessary additives, then you can eat
pretty healthy. When you read some of
the ingredients it can be overwhelming.
A couple of ingredients that really scare
me is polyethylene glycol, or
polyglycerol polyricinoleate. It sounds
like something you should be putting
into your cars’ coolant system!
But seriously, there is no excuse to not
eat healthy.
PAGE 2
When it comes to the
salad bar, it’s great to
see people using it
however; I’m asking
that you line up along
the wall, instead of
lining up where you
normally do, which blocks access to the
hallway and elevator. That way if you do
not want the salad bar, it will be easier for
you to go right through to the dining
room. This will also make easier access
for those who are coming out of the elevator.
We are about half way through in
getting your Notice of Assessments in.
Good job!
I hope to have this
wrapped up by
mid-June.
Until next time
Denise

LISA’S LYRICS...
Well, we have finally hit summer. I
believe it was 2 years ago they were going
through floods down in the South, now it
appears we are in the complete opposite
situation with evacuations happening due
to fires. Here is hoping that rains will
come and give Alberta and BC a good
downpour and relieve pressure for the fire
fighters and volunteers that are helping to
save the homes and wildlife of Alberta.
In May we had a tornado drill,
thank you to all that participated.
With the weather that we have
been seeing worldwide we need to make
sure we are ahead of it and our
procedures are in place for disasters such
as tornados. When there is a tornado
warning, the fire alarm will not sound, the
only thing you will hear is the staff over
the PA – so if you are watching the news
and there is a weather warning for a
tornado in the area, you know that you
need to head into your bathroom for
safety.
We lost power for 3 hours in May, seems
we are getting prepared for all different
sorts of situations. It happened early, so
it worked out that supper was already
ready. That may not always be the case.
It is a good idea to have a flashlight
around your room in case this happens
again.
PAGE 4
In June we will have wing meetings. If the
time does not work for you when it is your
wing, please don’t hesitate to come to
another time that does. It is a great time
to have a discussion, easier for me to
address concerns and answer questions. I
look forward to seeing you all come out.
We will also be moving tables in the
month of June – it is a great way to get to
know different residents and build
relationships with others.
I remind you that bugs are always
present - ants are everywhere please make sure that if you have food in
your room not to leave it laying around.
We have found many dishes in resident
rooms and this is a concern when we
don’t have enough to go around for a
meal. If you are taking something back to
your room you need to bring the dish
back as soon as possible. If this continues
to be a problem we may not be able to
allow the dishes to go back to the rooms.
Until next time I leave you with this:
Like a welcome summer rain,
humor may suddenly cleanse
and cool the earth, the air and
you.
Take care of yourself and each other

DENISE’S DESK. . .
Ah! The month of
June. Can you believe
it? The month of June
was always an
exciting time for me
when I was growing up, as I’m sure it
was for many other kids. It meant that
we would be on the countdown until
school was out, and then
coming home on the last day
of school with our report
cards; proudly boasting as to
what grade we were going to
be in the next year.
I hope some of you folks are making
plans for the summer whether it’s taking
part in a family reunion or a milestone
birthday party with family and friends,
or watching one of your great
grandchildren walking down the aisle at
their wedding.
that you please bring it to my office as
soon as you can.
Hopefully, we will have good weather
this year for the Seniors Appreciation
Bar-B-Que in a couple of weeks. It’s a
great way to get everyone
together to do
something out of
Seniors
the ordinary. The
office staff, the
Managers, as well
as staff in all
three lodges play
a part in setting this up. The lodges
make the salads and dessert, the
Recreation team get the majority of
things set up and the rest of us roll up
our sleeves and help where we are
needed. Looking forward to seeing you
there!

HEALTH & FITNESS
The saying, “You are what you
eat,” is true. A healthy diet
provides the ingredients to
build and repair bones and
tissues and keep the complex
workings of the human body functioning
optimally. It also provides the mental and
physical energy necessary for daily life –
work, recreation, relationships and time
with family. It is clear that a healthy diet
also protects us from infectious illnesses
and chronic diseases so that we may age
with a minimum of ill health.
As people age, the need for calories
decreases while the need
for nutrients often
increases. This can pose
a challenge for seniors.
Here are some facts to consider:
FACT: Seniors have higher rates of heart
disease, cancer, high cholesterol and high
blood pressure than the rest of the
adult population. These diseases can be
prevented or controlled through healthy
eating and regular physical activity.
FACT: The majority of seniors
are overweight or obese. It’s
also true that you are never too
old to lose weight, and that losing just a little weight – even
five pounds – can make a huge
difference to your health.
PAGE 12
FACT: Most seniors are not as physically
active as they could be. Seniors who are
physically active for at least an hour each
day have better heart health and are
better able to control their weight than
those who are not as active.
FACT: The majority of senior men and
many senior women eat more than the
recommended amount of
sodium (salt). Decreasing the
amount of sodium you eat can
substantially reduce your risk of
high blood pressure.
FACT: Many seniors do not get enough
calcium, folate, vitamin B6,
vitamin B12 and vitamin C
through the food they eat.
The right vitamins and
minerals, in the right
amounts, can help prevent
anemia, depression and memory loss.
They can also help you heal better after
surgery or an injury, and help keep your
bones and teeth healthy and strong.
FACT: Most senior women do not eat
enough vegetables and
fruit, grains, milk and milk
products, meat and meat
alternatives. Most senior
men do not eat enough vegetables and
fruit or milk and milk products.
It is possible to change and improve the
way you eat – and the way you feel – at
any age.

Marrakesh, Morocco
Mysterious, medieval, ancient; with
palaces that rise
over narrow,
winding streets
where workshops,
outdoor markets
known as souks
and gardens stretch across a country that
dates back to the year 789.
Morocco's cuisine is as exquisite as it's

Africa; and a delicacy of the Spanish
Moors called Pastille, a savoury pastry
filled with chicken and dusted with
cinnamon.... all dishes common in the
kitchens of Morocco.
Spice markets are readily available with

amazed as you immerse yourself in the

INFORMATION
Benefits of Drinking Water
Drinking enough water is a top
priority when it comes to l
looking and feeling your best.
Water is essential for your
health. We need water to regulate body
temperature, transport oxygen and
nutrients to cells, flush toxins from
organs, and cushion joints.
What happens when you don’t drink
enough water?
Not drinking enough water can have a big
impact on the way you feel. Symptoms
can range from mild cramps to
life-threatening heat stroke, which is when
the body’s sweating mechanism shuts
down. Even mild dehydration can lead to
headaches, feeling grouchy, light
headedness, lack of
focus, flushed skin, dry
mouth and fatigue. If
dehydration progresses, it can cause
extreme thirst, lack of sweating, rapid
heartbeat, muscle spasms and heatstroke.
Certain age groups are more susceptible
of dehydration. The elderly are also at
increased risk since they may be less
aware of thirst or on medications that
amplify the effects of dehydration.
What do you need?
Our bodies are made up of 50 to 70 per
cent water and most healthy adults need
six to eight glasses of fluid a day.
Periodically, check your mouth. If it’s dry
or you feel thirsty, drink. Drinking water
PAGE 14
is also a natural energy booster. The next
time you’re tired, drink an 8 ounce glass
of water. You’ll find that you have more
energy and that your mind is clearer.
Eat your water
You can use certain foods to hydrate your
body. Roughly 19 per cent of our water
needs can be met by high-water-content
foods. Fruits and vegetables owe at least
three-quarters of their weight in water.
For example, an apple contains 84 per
cent water and a tomato contains about
97 per cent water.
How to tell if you are hydrated
You can tell if you are drinking enough
water by checking the colour of your
urine. If your mouth feels dry or your
urine is strong and bright yellow, you may
be dehydrated. It should be clear to light
yellow. Bear in mind that bright yellow
urine could also occur if you are taking
vitamins that contain riboflavin.
Make it a habit
Most people need to up their intake. To
increase your water consumption to
healthy levels, skip beverages such as
coffee and soda and replace them with
water, and drink a glass of water with
every meal. Have a glass of water when
you first get up. You can flavor your
water, with a splash of blueberry or
pomegranate juice, or add a
slice of lemon. Without
knowing it, you’ll consume
more water.
Your body will thank you!

LAUGH OUT LOUD
Recently, when I
'We only have six, nine, or twelve,'
went to McDonald's
was the reply.
I saw on the menu
that you could have
'So I can't order a half dozen
an order of 6, 9 or

12 Chicken
McNuggets.
''That's right.'
I asked for a half dozen nuggets.
So I shook my
