Caring for tomorrow
To meet the increasing needs of our community and provide top-quality care for even more patients, Norton Healthcare
is undergoing remarkable growth. We’ve recently opened a new $26.4 million Norton Cancer Institute building in
downtown Louisville providing world-class technology, treatment services and multidisciplinary clinics for cancer
care and research. During the next few years, we’ll establish a new women’s and children’s hospital to better serve our
community’s needs.
As with most lofty missions, the success of our efforts rests on support from others. That means the ongoing ability to
provide the high-tech/high-touch care our community has come to expect will rely heavily on private philanthropic
support through the Norton Healthcare Foundation.
For the people featured in this report, your contributions have made a vital difference – yesterday and today. Together,
we also can build a brighter tomorrow.
Caring for every stage of life
Having undergone countless surgeries since childhood,
Ashley Brady, 25, wasn’t sure her dream of motherhood
would become a reality. That’s why she and her husband,
Steven, consider it a “double miracle” to have welcomed
two healthy babies into the world at Norton Hospital.
Daughter, Karlie, arrived in 2010 and son, Easton, in
2011 – both in perfect health, thanks to the excellent care
Ashley has received over the years from Norton Healthcare
specialists.
As an active mom, Ashley might appear to be the picture
of health. But for the past 13 years, she has been treated
by specialists with Norton Neuroscience Institute
for hydrocephalus, a buildup of fluid on her brain.
Complicating matters, specialists discovered Ashley had
histoplasmosis, a fungal infection from soil spores known as
“Ohio Valley disease,” which can be fatal if untreated.
Prior to starting her family, Ashley consulted with maternalfetal medicine specialists at Norton Healthcare, who care for
women with high-risk pregnancies. Since Ashley continues
to require care for her conditions, she knew a pregnancy
could be complicated. Fortunately, she could count on
Norton Women’s Care, the region’s preferred provider
for high-risk deliveries. Each year, Norton Healthcare
physicians deliver more than 8,000 babies – more than any
other health care system in the Louisville Metro area.

Caring for potential
Although she’s only 21, Ali Arnett is already on her way to an
exciting career in journalism, marketing and communications. As
a college senior, she’s involved in campus life and recently spent a
semester studying in Italy.
Ali’s life may have been much different, though, without the care
she has received over the years from Norton Healthcare. As a teen,
she was diagnosed with two conditions – tethered cord syndrome,
a neurological disorder that limits spinal cord movement, and
scoliosis, curvature of the spine. Neuro/spine experts from
Kosair Children’s Hospital and Norton Leatherman Spine Center
performed two surgeries to correct the conditions – a release of her
tethered cord followed by a spinal fusion and rod placement.
Ali’s story is another great example of how Norton Healthcare
physicians with expertise in several medical disciplines work
collaboratively every day to significantly improve patient care.
Ali’s progress is currently being monitored by Norton Leatherman
Spine Center as part of a study of patients who have undergone
similar surgical procedures. Supporting important research is
another hallmark of Norton Healthcare.

Caring for our future
As a survivor of childhood cancer, Lauren Blakemore, now 23, is sincerely compassionate toward others and deeply appreciative
for the care she has received at Kosair Children’s Hospital and Norton Hospital.
At age 13, Lauren was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare type of bone cancer. To beat it, she underwent numerous surgeries,
chemotherapy and radiation treatments during a 280-day stay at Kosair Children’s Hospital.
Motivated by the phenomenal care she received from Norton Cancer Institute and Kosair Children’s Hospital specialists, Lauren’s
goal is to help others through Norton Cancer Institute’s Survivorship Program, which provides comprehensive clinical support,
educational resources and other care tailored to the unique needs of cancer survivors.
As the region’s leading provider of comprehensive cancer care, Norton Cancer Institute has made significant improvements in
cancer prevention, treatment and research in recent years. In addition, Norton Cancer Institute’s Prevention & Early Detection
Program provides free cancer screenings in Louisville-area communities that have higher-than-average rates of cancer.

Caring for strength
Caring for hope
As a cancer survivor and avid cyclist, Bob Iliff, 62, knows that a strong support system is the key to staying healthy – physically
and mentally. Diagnosed with esophageal cancer in 2007, Bob’s battle has been easier thanks to the compassionate caregivers at
Norton Cancer Institute. During the past three years, he and his family have relied on Norton Cancer Institute’s Survivorship
Program for emotional support and the latest health information.
With four teenage stepsons and a job as a customer service
representative, Cherhonda Humphries has her hands full.
Her hectic schedule is further complicated by the challenge
of health issues that require the services of Norton
Heart Care.
“When you’re trying to cope with cancer, sometimes it’s a challenge to keep up a positive attitude,” Bob said. “The good thing is
that there are places like Norton Cancer Institute to help.”
Not only have Bob and his wife, Pearl, benefited from the survivorship program, but their granddaughter has too by taking part in
art therapy to help her cope with her grandfather’s diagnosis.
“Having someone to talk to was very helpful for all of us,” Bob said. “Cancer doesn’t just take a toll physically, getting through it
is emotionally challenging for the entire family.”
Motivated by the amazing care Norton Cancer Institute provides, Bob’s goal is to help others. As general manager of DSI
Underground in Louisville, which manufactures tunnel supports, Bob collaborated with the Norton Cancer Institute Mobile
Prevention Center to host an on-site health fair for his colleagues. In addition, he has cycled along with other cancer survivors,
families and friends to raise money for research in the Bike to Beat Cancer, benefiting Norton Cancer Institute.
“To fight cancer, it takes an entire team – the patient, doctors, nurses, therapists, family and friends – to help you get back on
your feet, or in my case, back on a bike,” Bob said. “A lot of people don’t realize that anyone can join the survivorship program. It
doesn’t matter where you received treatment. Norton Cancer Institute provides phenomenal support.”

survivors like Bob. For families battling

Cherhonda, 36, was born with a congenital heart defect in
which the two major vessels that carry blood away from the
heart are transposed, or switched, limiting oxygen flow. As
an infant, she had two surgeries to correct the condition,
but she began experiencing abnormal heart rhythms at
age 32. She needed a pacemaker, but her arteries were too
narrow for the device.
Working in tandem with experts at the Congenital Heart
Center at Kosair Children’s Hospital, Norton Heart Care
specialists were able to widen her arteries with a stent
to allow a pacemaker. Now she’s on medication and her
condition is closely monitored with follow-up visits to
Norton Heart Care. Although Cherhonda currently is in
good health, she was recently placed on the heart transplant
list as a precaution. Since her need isn’t critical, she’s at the
bottom of the list and will remain there as long as she stays
healthy, which is her goal.
