US History Mr. Hasdovic, Room E-10 Learning Targets & Self-Assessment Unit #2 : America Industrializes and Grows Learning Targets Overview: These are the targets you will be assessed upon for this unit. Some of these targets will be covered in class exclusively; some will be covered in homework exclusively. Most will be covered both in class and in homework. Be aware of which targets you need to learn! Targets to be covered in class… SECTION ONE: Industrialists and Transportation o #1 I can the difference between the US’s First and Second Industrial Revolution – especially in regards to what caused them and how they transformed the US. o #2 I can explain the difference between vertical and horizontal integration. o #3 I can explain the importance railroads – especially the transcontinental railroad – and the process in which they linked together all corners of the United States. o #4 I can explain what mass transit systems, like subways and elevated trains, are and explain how they affected industrialized cities. o #5 I can explain the technological and urban economic importance that suspension bridges (such as the Brooklyn Bridge) played in the growth of urban areas. SECTION TWO: Industrialists, Engineers and Inventions o #6 I can explain the contributions of the following inventors or engineers: John & Washington Roebling, James Watt, Robert Fulton, Cyrus McCormick, Florence Parpart, Alexander Graham Bell, Christopher Sholes, and Thomas Edison. o #7 I can describe the importance that The Bessemer Process, steel and steam engines played in American commerce. o #8 I can identify who Edwin L. Drake was and the significance of his work with oil. o #9 I can define what an industrialist is and identify significances concerning the industrialists George Pullman, Andrew Carnegie, and John D. Rockefeller SECTION THREE: America Industrializes… Twice! o #10 I can list abundant natural resources in Industrial-era America. o #11 I can explain what the standard of living is and how industrialization raised it, especially through the innovations of steel, electricity, and plumbing. o #12 I can explain how industrialization negatively impacted cities and their inhabitants. o #13 I can describe the conditions that child laborers worked in and why child labor was so frequently used. SECTION FOUR: Immigration o #14 I can define urbanization, tenement & settlement house. o #15 I can identify and describe the significance of Jane Addams. o #16 I can list multiple reasons as to why immigrants were “pushed” and “pulled” into the United States. o o o o o o #17 I can differentiate Ellis and Angel Islands. #18 I can explain how and why immigrants chose to settle in cities, how it affected the size of cities and indicate some cities which were big draws for immigrant settlement. #19 I can define and cite examples of ethnic enclaves. #20 I can identify and explain nativism, the Chinese Exclusion Act and the Gentleman’s Agreement. #21 I can explain what the Americanization Movement was – especially in regards to the Native American experience. #22 I can describe reasons why some Americans welcomed immigrants and why some disliked immigrants. SECTION FIVE: The Gilded Age o #23 I can define The Gilded Age, political machines and graft. o #24 I can identify “Boss” William Tweed and the impact he had upon New York City Politics and how the Pendleton Civil Service Act was, in part, a response to Tweed. o #25 I can define the following terms: Corporation, Trust, Merger, Monopoly, The Sherman Anti-Trust Act, and the Interstate Commerce Act. o #26 I can explain what a labor union is, why labor unions were formed, and how they fought against the power of industrialists. o #27 I can identify who the significance of early labor leaders like Samuel Gompers, Marry Harris Jones, Eugene V. Debs as well as what the AFL was.
