2013 Season
Issue #2
Meet Schedule
Congratulations to the Blue Marlin Swim Team! We had a
great start to the season against the Pineloch Piranhas. A
Blue Marlin win of 410 to Piranhas 317. Please continue
visiting the website www.brooksbluemarlins.com for all upcoming events and important information.
We are ready for meet #2, against the Clear Lake Forest
Fins, this Saturday, at the Clear Lake Forest
Pool. Please remember All swimmers must be checked in
between 6:15 a.m. and 6:30 a.m. If you are not checked in
by 6:30 a.m. you will be scratched. All volunteers must also
be checked in by 6:30 am please.
Just a friendly reminder that you MUST contact Hope Taub
281-480-3169, BEFORE the meet, if something comes up and
your swimmer cannot attend the meet. THIS IS CRUCIAL, as
we had a few relays that had to be scratched due to no notification. It not only affects your swimmer, but the other
three swimmers in the relay, as well. The same goes with
leaving the meets early. The two swim teams establish a
meet schedule with swimmer cards and heat placement.
Please notify a coach by 7:00am, if you must leave early that
day. Remember that our team “volunteers” spend many
hours coordinating our meets. We understand that life happens, but please be courteous and plan accordingly when
possible.
I know that the kids will swim great this weekend! And thank
you to those parents who are working shifts. Reminder . . . .
We will not have practice June 6th as this is the last day of
school.

Marlin Talk
Notes from our Volunteer Coordinators . . .
As each of you know, Blue Marlins is a volunteer run organization. As part of the “team”, each family is
obligated to work at least 6 shifts, regardless, if your child participates in the meets. As volunteer coordinators we do our best to place you in the areas of your interest, but occasionally we have to move folks
around to meet the requirements. For example, we must fill timer slots before filling a third concession
slot. Remember, we have Friday night set-up, early Saturday morning set-up, early concession set-up, and
end of meet clean-up options available, if you prefer not to work during the actual swim meet. We sincerely want you to be able to work the
shift of your choice, but please be understanding when adjustments must be made. The volunteer shifts are offered on our website
www.brooksbluemarlins.com, and may be checked-off for areas of interest. IF YOU HAVE NOT CHECKED AN AREA OF INTEREST ON THE WEBSITE, AND YOUR CHILD IS SWIMMING; YOU WILL BE RANDOMLY ASSIGNED A SHIFT. The shift opportunities are available for choosing until the
Monday BEFORE the swim meet—at which time the shifts are closed and then randomly assigned if child is swimming.
Also, we understand that summer is, also, family vacation time. So, it is imperative that you tell us in ADVANCE if you will be missing a meet so
we can assign you extra shifts at another meet. Or, perhaps, you need to leave the meet early, please notify the volunteer coordinators by
7:00am, so we can make adjustments. Swimmers must notify their coaches of an early departure—the same goes for our parent volunteers.
Our meets have been successful and have ran smoothly, thanks to our parents’ cooperation. We do try to keep two volunteers on standby, for
those families that need to leave early for whatever reason. If you would like to be a standby volunteer, please let us know by 7:00am, so that
we may add you to our back-up list. Thank you for your understanding, and please know that we are trying our very best to accommodate all
families. Our goal is to have happy parents, fast swimmers, and smoothly ran swim meets!
Go Marlins!
Ann Ierubino & Angela Dizazzo, volunteer coordinators
Notes from our Coaches. . .
“How do Coaches decide which swim strokes my child will swim?” These decisions are based upon the observation of the swimmers at practice, initially. However, as the swim season progresses, and times are clocked, our coaches begin to strategically placed BM swimmers in areas
that would benefit both the team and the individual swimmer. It might not always be your swimmers, choice stroke, but the coaches have
faith in their abilities to swim them. Or perhaps, the coaches want to see how they perform the stoke in a meet situation, knowing their swim
potential. Bottom line is that our coaches want the swimmers to have fun, and to challenge themselves by expanding their swi m repertoire.
All swimmers will eventually learn all 4 strokes (free, back, breast, & fly). Now perfecting them might take two practices, or an entire season,
and that’s okay, too.
“How do Coaches seed the freestyle relays?” The computer indicates the top swim times for all swimmers in each category. Then the top
seeded times are placed on tiered relays according to age groups. The same goes for the medley relays.
- Freestyle Relay: all four swimmers swim the same stroke, a freestyle stroke
- Medley Relay: is a combination of four different strokes: Butterfly, Backstroke, Breaststroke, & Freestyle, with each swimmer taking a
different stroke.
- Individual Medley (IM): This race is swum by one swimmer performing all four strokes
“How many times can my child swim in a single meet?” According to CCSL rules, each swimmer is allowed to participate in a maximum of 5
events total, with a maximum of 3 individual strokes. For example: a swimmer may swim the freestyle, backstroke & fly, plus the freestyle
relay and the medley relay; making that a total of 5 combined participating events. Please remember that swim team is about “learning and
progressing” in various strokes. Be patient and encouraging. Swim team is FUN, and is not considered year round swimming.
“May I address the coaches for additional private swim lessons?” Yes, many of our coaches will provide additional swim lessons. Of course,
there is a lesson fee associated at their discretion; and lessons coordinated on individual basis, before or after practice.
Ribbons for Swimmers . . .
Ribbons will be available at practices on Tuesday and Wednesday after the meets. Swimmers’ ribbons will have a sticker on each of them that
reflects their name, the type of stroke and event number, their age group, along with their entered swim time. If you are not able to pick up
your ribbons on the day of distribution, no worries, as they will remain in your child’s folder throughout the season. Family last names will be
grouped together, rather than individual folders for each child in the family. Example: the Dominguez family folder will hold ribbons for all
three of their children swimming. Occasionally, you might find a maroon ribbon that serves as a “Disqualification Ribbon” (DQ), but is placed in
the swimmer’s folder in recognition of their participation. Be patient parents . . . . . As many young swimmers receive DQ’s during their learning curve. Disqualifications are not meant to be personal, but rather to help improve your child’s swim techniques. If you child is DQ’d after a
swim, a stroke and turn judge should notify the swimmer as soon as he/she exits the water as to the reason for the disqualification. (mainly so
that it may be corrected for their next race). There are times a stroke and turn judge will notify a Blue Marlin coach, if nearby. Often times,
they will be quick and curt in their notification, as they must be ready for the following race to occur. DQ’s are part of the swim team process,
and even our best swimmers, occasionally, get disqualified. Please support and encourage your child so that they are confident and ready for
their next race. And parents . . . . Please don’t shoot the messenger.

Champ and Reserve times are established by Clear Creek Swim League (CCSL), so that swimmers who obtain the above times during any official
BM swim meet, can enter into a final meet series to compete against other swimmers with qualifying and above times. The meet series is referred to as the “Champ Series” which is made up of three (3) separate meets (Novice, Reserve, Champ), all culminating with the final “Champ
Meet” on a Sunday, at the Texas City Natatorium. This series ends the swim team season with all 21 swim teams competing against each other
for top swim times amongst swimmers. It’s a wonderful opportunity for our swimmers to compete in, and there is something for all levels of
swim! Novice Meet, Reserve Meet, and the final Champ Meet. More information regarding this series will be discussed with the swimmers and
parents after Meet #4 at South Belt. Just in case, you’re still in town and want your swimmer to participate in the meet, please reserve the
weekend of June 29th-30th.
