ETA is well known for its superb productions and broadcasts, which have become an integral part
of life for many who appreciate the unique opportunities for lifelong learning that public broadcasting
makes possible. On television, highly visible examples of our exceptional programming include our trusted news
and public affairs productions PBS NewsHour and Washington Week, the acclaimed history films we produce with
Ken Burns and Henry Louis Gates, Jr., the dazzling arts showcases we present from the nation’s capital, the locally
focused productions we create, and our WETA Kids and WETA UK offerings. On radio, Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s
classical music service is a source of joy and inspiration for listeners throughout the national capital area.
WETA’s public service and dedication to lifelong learning encompass much more than what viewers and listeners
see and hear on the air, however. Our ongoing commitment to education is realized as well through important off-air
endeavors, such as the education of parents and caregivers in Greater Washington about how to use our enriching
children’s programming to support learning and literacy. Online, our Learning Media staff has developed awardwinning national websites that focus on making learning available to all on such important topics as literacy, learning
disabilities, brain injury, summer education for children, and more. Among these resource-laden sites is BrainLine.org,
which you can learn more about below. Thank you for your ongoing support of WETA’s vital programs and services.

s WETA TV 26 airs the history miniseries The Great War: American Experience this month, the ongoing WETA
Learning Media project BrainLine takes on a special relevance. The story of World War I provides a reminder of the huge
toll of any war, including the price paid by survivors and their families. In the
aftermath of World War I, medical researchers started looking at what was then
called “shell shock” and is now called “post-traumatic stress disorder” or PTSD.
It is an issue that lingers today, for veterans and civilians alike, and one that
WETA is actively addressing through BrainLine, which provides information
on preventing, treating and living with traumatic brain injury (TBI) and PTSD.
The project’s website, BrainLine.org, presents authoritative content
on diagnosis and treatment, and an online community for the millions of
Americans living with TBI or PTSD, for their families, and for professionals
in the field. Resources include articles, videos, expert interviews, and other
valuable tools that make it possible for users to connect with experts and with
each other. On the web since 2008, BrainLine now serves more than 200,000 unique visitors each month and a vibrant
community on Facebook and Twitter. Reflecting WETA’s deep commitment to aiding service members, veterans and
their families, BrainLine’s companion website — BrainLineMilitary.org — provides a trove of military-specific resources
on TBI and PTSD. The site also offers a platform for those contending with these challenges to share their personal
stories. For more details, visit WETA Learning Media sites BrainLine.org and BrainLineMilitary.org.
BrainLine and BrainLine Military are funded by the Bob Woodruff Foundation, the American Institutes for Research,
and the Center for Brain Injury Research and Training at the University of Oregon.

April Drama on WETA TV 26/HD
New to WETA!
Midsomer Murders, Series 12
Thursdays at 8 p.m. starting April 27 on WETA TV 26/HD
remiering on WETA TV 26/HD and WETA UK in April is Series 12 of the popular
British crime drama Midsomer Murders, based on the novels of Caroline Graham.
Featuring an eccentric cast of characters, red herrings, and quaint countryside scenery,
the long-running crime series is set in the deceptively idyllic fictional English county
of Midsomer. At the heart of the show is the unflappable investigator Detective Chief
Inspector Tom Barnaby, portrayed by John Nettles. In Series 12, Barnaby and his
colleague DS Jones (Jason Hughes) investigate seven new mysteries, including a
murdered man found tied up in his town’s miniature model village; a paranoid
school teacher convinced of intruders despite no evidence; and the smothering of a
famous author that may or may not be connected to a series of break-ins. In another
upcoming episode, a former British spy is found murdered and Barnaby must find a
way to solve the murder without access to the crime scene. Before Midsomer Murders
begins on April 27, Thursday nights feature the ongoing series Dickensian, which
places many of author Charles Dickens’ iconic literary characters in an intriguing
storyline that unfolds in one Victorian London neighborhood.

Sundays at 8 & 9 p.m. on WETA TV 26/HD
COURTESY NEAL STREET PRODUCTIONS 2016
eading off the Sunday drama lineup in April is the series Call the Midwife,
which returns in a new season to spotlight the team of midwives and medics that
aids patients in the Poplar neighborhood of London’s East End. In Series 6, it is
now 1962 and times are changing, from increased liberation for women to the
introduction of new government policies. In the new programs, austere Sister
Ursula is appointed the new head of Nonnatus House and Sister Julienne finds
herself demoted and working as an ordinary member of the staff. She is not the
only one to face challenges. As they strive to help mothers and families cope with
the demands of childbearing, disability, disease and social prejudice, the midwives
and doctors must make choices — and fight battles — of their own.
Airing at 9 p.m. after Call the Midwife each Sunday is Home Fires: The Final
Season on Masterpiece, which follows the story of a group of inspirational women
Call the Midwife
in an English village during World War II. As the conflict takes hold and the
separation from their husbands, fathers, sons and brothers becomes more painful, the women rely on one another and
their friendships forged through village life. Samantha Bond (Downton Abbey) and Francesca Annis (Reckless) head
the cast. Rounding out the Sunday drama block at 10 p.m. is a reprised airing of Wolf Hall on Masterpiece.
Funding for Masterpiece is provided by Viking River Cruises and Farmers Insurance, with additional support
from public television viewers and contributors to The Masterpiece Trust.

Latin Music USA
Starts Friday, April 28 at 9 p.m. on WETA TV 26/HD
W
ETA presents an encore broadcast of a documentary miniseries that
explores the Latin rhythms at the heart of jazz, rock, rhythm and blues, and
country and highlights the great American music created by Latinos. Actor
Jimmy Smits narrates the series, which spotlights Latin jazz, mambo and
cha-cha, salsa, Chicano musical voices, contemporary pop and urban fusions, and more. Revealing the Latin sounds
that have influenced American music, the films feature the stories of an extraordinary range of artists, including salsa
greats Willie Colón and Marc Anthony; the Latin-inflected sounds found in much of 1960s rock ’n’ roll, including
Motown and the Rolling Stones; jazz fused with Cuban rhythms from Mario Bauzá and Chano Pozo; the genius
of Texas accordion player Flaco Jiménez; Linda Ronstadt; the legendary Chicano rock band Los Lobos; megastars
Gloria and Emilio Estefan; Ricky Martin and Juanes; Miami rapper Pitbull; percussionist Bobby Sanabria; reggaetón
performers Daddy Yankee and Tego Calderón; and Lin-Manuel Miranda of Broadway.

ach Wednesday night at 8 p.m., WETA presents Nature, one of the
most-watched documentary film series on public television. Now in its
35th season, the acclaimed series explores the wonder and beauty of
the natural world, presenting original natural history films that spotlight
animals and environments around the globe. This month, after an
encore broadcast of Owl Power, which on April 5 spotlights the raptors
and how they’re influencing 21st-century technology and design, WETA
premieres new Nature productions on the Wednesdays that follow.
Viva Puerto Rico, airing April 12,
spotlights the tropical island’s natural
wonders, focusing on native wildlife
that is threatened with extinction. In the
program, meet the scientists dedicated
to preserving Puerto Rico’s rich biological heritage as they try to restore wild flocks of
parrots, protect endangered Leatherback turtles and rescue and rehabilitate manatees
in Puerto Rican waters. Hotel Armadillo, airing April 19, visits Brazil’s tropical
Pantanal wetlands to follow the mysterious and secretive Giant Armadillo, which digs
a new burrow every other night. Once this termite-eater moves on, it leaves behind an
in-demand plot of real estate for a spectacular array of animals. From families of nursing anteaters to foraging coatis, the
film showcases creatures of the grasslands along with the scientists who observe the burrows’ exotic guests. Wrapping up
the month on April 26 is Forest of the Lynx, which explores the complexity of a remote forest of the Kalkalpen National
Park in Austria — the largest wilderness area in the Alps. Abandoned by humans and unmanaged for close to a quarter
of a century, the forest’s dramatic cycle of growth and decay is part of the process of its regeneration and transformation
back to its natural, primeval state. One of the habitat’s most significant
changes, however, is the return of the lynx. After 150 years of absence, the
illusive feline’s presence is a testimony to nature’s power of revival.
Funding for Latin Music USA is provided by the National Endowment for the Arts, Latino Public Broadcasting,
public television viewers, PBS and the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

The Great War: American Experience
three-part documentary series, airing over three consecutive nights, explores how World War I transformed
America, examining the conflict through the voices of nurses, journalists, aviators and the soldiers who came to be
known as “doughboys.” Marking the 100th anniversary of America’s entry into the war on April 6, 1917, the six-hour
American Experience film The Great War draws on the latest scholarship, such as unpublished diaries, memoirs and
letters, to include the stories of African-American soldiers, women, Native-American “code talkers” and others whose
participation in the war to “make the world safe for democracy” has been largely forgotten. Actor Oliver Platt narrates
the series, which is directed by
award-winning filmmakers Stephen
Ives, Amanda Pollak and Rob
Rapley. Ives partnered with WETA
on The West and he and Pollak
collaborated with WETA on the film
Reporting America at War. Their
film Grand Coulee Dam also airs
this month on WETA TV 26/HD.
The series spotlights how
President Woodrow Wilson
steered the nation through almost
three years of neutrality, only to
reluctantly lead America into the
bloodiest conflict the world had
ever seen, thereby transforming
the United States into a dominant
player on the international stage;
and how the ardent patriotism and
determination to support America’s crusade for liberty abroad led to one of the most oppressive crackdowns on civil
liberties at home in American history. It is also a story of little-known heroism and sacrifice (including the deadliest
battle in American history) that would leave more than 53,000 Americans dead on the battlefield and more than
60,000 dead from disease. The war was a cataclysm of violence that would ultimately claim 15 million lives and
change the world—and the United States—in ways still being felt today.
Exclusive corporate funding for American Experience provided by Liberty Mutual Insurance. Major funding provided by the Alfred P. Sloan
Foundation. Additional funding for The Great War provided by The Documentary Investment Group: Gretchen Stone Cook Charitable Foundation,
Marjie and Robert Kargman; and by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and public television viewers.

NOVA: Holocaust Escape Tunnel
or centuries, the Lithuanian city of Vilnius was one of the most important
Jewish centers in the world, earning the title “Jerusalem of the North,”
until the Nazis destroyed it. About 95% of its Jewish population of Vilna,
its name in Hebrew and Yiddish, was murdered in 1941 and its synagogues
and institutions reduced to ruins. The Soviets then paved over the remnants
of Vilna’s famous Great Synagogue so thoroughly that few today know it ever existed. Now, an international team of
archaeologists is trying to recover this lost world. WETA marks Holocaust Remembrance Month with the April 19
broadcast of a new NOVA presentation, Holocaust Escape Tunnel, which unveils the tragic story of Vilna’s Jewish
community, follows excavations of the remains of the temple, and uncovers one of Vilna’s greatest secrets: a lost escape
tunnel dug by Jewish prisoners inside a horrific Nazi execution site (above) in the nearby forest of Ponar. Also airing on
April 19 is Escape from a Nazi Death Camp, which explores a break-out by 300 Jewish prisoners from Sobibor, a remote
Nazi death camp in East Poland. The film travels back to Sobibor with the last remaining survivors to reveal their story
of courage, desperation and determination.
National corporate funding for NOVA is provided by Cancer Treatment Centers of America. Major funding for NOVA is
provided by the David H. Koch Fund for Science, the Corporation for Public Broadcasting, and public television viewers.
Additional funding is provided by The Steve Perry Foundation.

WETA UK April Highlights
The Level
drama stars Karla Crome (right) as Detective Sergeant Nancy Devlin, a good cop with a dark
secret: a loyalty to drug trafficker Frank Le Saux (Philip Glenister), to whom she has been close
since childhood. Devlin must walk a very dangerous line when she is present at a clandestine
meeting that goes very wrong — after which she is assigned to an investigation of the incident,
risking exposure of her ties to Frank. In her hometown of Brighton, she cannot escape her past:
her ex-cop father Gil Devlin (Gary Lewis) — a man she’d happily never see again, and childhood
best friend Hayley (Laura Haddock), Frank’s daughter. In her police work, Devlin must track
down a killer while concealing her own role from her new colleagues.

aking the Dead’s forensic pathologist Dr. Eve Lockhart (Tara Fitzgerald) returns in a
spin-off series with a new team of scientists. Unlocking the secrets hidden by death, they hunt
for evidence and answers at a private lab, the Body Farm, where the boundaries of experimental
forensic research are pushed to the limit. When called on by the police to help solve a series
of grisly murders, Lockhart sees an opportunity both to pay the bills and expand the horizons
of her operation. Alongside hardened homicide detective DI Hale, portrayed by Keith Allen
(Trainspotting, Robin Hood), they work to achieve results and to catch the killer. Soon drawn
into Lockhart’s world, Hale finds that the lab’s techniques are vital to his police work.

four-part heist drama spotlights three employees of a security depot who plan and execute
a multimillion-pound cash robbery. John Coniston (right, Steven Mackintosh, of Luther) is the
seemingly straight-laced manager of the secure depot; Marcus (Warren Brown, of Luther) moves
trolleys of cash; and Chris (Ashley Walters) is a security guard. Every day they watch as millions
of pounds worth of cash is counted, bound, and stored in a vault. When John catches Chris and
Marcus stealing £50,000 from the vault, they expect the worst. But to their surprise, John doesn’t
report them. He wants in — and they set their sights on a bigger theft. What does it take to cross
a moral line? What does it mean to risk one’s freedom? And what are the consequences?

elebrate the next generation of musicians as the April
broadcast of NSO Showcase presents three stunningly talented
young soloists in performance at the John F. Kennedy Center
for the Performing Arts. We’ll feature British pianist Benjamin
Grosvenor (age 25), Spanish violinist Leticia Moreno (age 32)
and Russian pianist Daniil Trifonov (age 26).
A “greatly gifted young artist,” according to The Times of
Benjamin Grosvenor
London, Benjamin Grosvenor made a splash with the NSO at Wolf Trap in 2013.
Three years later, he was making his Kennedy Center Concert Hall debut with Mozart’s final and nostalgic piano
concerto, No.27, written in 1791, the year of the composer’s death. “He commands the stage with aristocratic ease,”
writes The New York Times, “Mr. Grosvenor makes you sigh with joy...A temperament rare in yesteryear, let alone now.”
Violinist Leticia Moreno “has,” writes Le Figaro, “the grace of a flamenco dancer, the strength of character of an
Andalusian cantaora and the smoldering gaze of one of Almodóvar’s heroines. Without a doubt Spain has just found
a perfect musical ambassador.” Moreno made her NSO debut in March 2015 with a
performance of Edouard Lalo’s dazzling masterpiece, the Symphonie espagnole.
Following his sensational NSO debut in 2014, the young piano phenom and
Tchaikovsky Competition winner Daniil Trifonov returned to the Concert Hall in April
2015 for Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No.3. Critics have raved about Trifonov’s
“scintillating technique and virtuosic flair,” (The New York Times) and marveled at how
he “makes the piano sing, whisper and melt into liquid” (The Guardian).
These three mega-talented young musicians will all be featured on Classical WETA’s

Works by Gary Davison on Choral Showcase
Sundays at 9 p.m.

A
s we celebrate — all this year — Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s 10th anniversary as the exclusive radio home of
classical music in Washington, Choral Showcase is emphasizing local music and music-making even more than usual.
In April, we’re delighted to continue that theme as we feature several works by composer Gary Davison, organist and
choir master at St. Francis Episcopal in Potomac, Maryland. Although we happily claim Gary as a local artist, his work
is performed and recorded around the world. On the Easter Sunday (April 16) broadcast, I’ve scheduled his piece titled
Easter. The text is a loving reworking of Psalm 57 by the 17th-century poet-priest George Herbert, who compares the
wood of the lute (which Herbert played) with the wood of the Cross. Gary’s masterful setting is for high voices, organ
and viola soloist, and the performance is from the Cathedral Church of Saint Andrew, commonly known as Wells
Cathedral, in Wells, Somerset (England).
Also on Easter’s Choral Showcase, we’re pleased to bring you the December 2016 performance of Messiah from our
own Cathedral. Canon Michael McCarthy conducts Handel’s masterpiece in the magnificent setting of Washington
National Cathedral. A week later, on April 23, Michael McCarthy conducts the ensemble Cathedra in two more pieces
by Davison from the group’s New American Choral Music Series. I’ve scheduled Mount Saint Alban Communion
Service (commissioned by National Cathedral), and Nunc dimittis, a beautiful setting of words of dismissal (from Luke),
to conclude the program. The April 23 broadcast also features Gisèle Becker’s fine D.C.-based group, Cantate Chamber
Singers. Gary Davison was Cantate’s keyboard artist for some years (and composer for them of two major commissioned
works). Cantate is well known for their commitment to Benjamin Britten’s music; from their “Britten Holiday” CD,
I’ve scheduled Judilate Deo and In the Bleak Mid-Winter.

o sum up the purpose of the Eclipse Chamber Orchestra, one need look no
further than their down-to-earth mission statement, “To celebrate classical music
that performers love to play and listeners love to hear.” Founded 25 years ago
by former National Symphony Orchestra French horn player Sylvia Alimena,
and now led by current NSO Principal Horn Abel Pereira, Eclipse Chamber
Orchestra presents performances that offer a winning combination: audiences
get to hear wonderful music in intimate settings, and the ensemble’s many NSO
musicians can revel in the smaller-scale chamber music experience. As part
of our focus on local artists in celebration of Classical WETA 90.9 FM’s 10th
anniversary on the air, the April 3 broadcast of Front Row Washington presents
the Eclipse Chamber Orchestra in concert at Saint Luke’s Catholic Church
in McLean, Virginia. Featured are two works by Richard Strauss, Serenade and
Metamorphosen, as well as Mozart’s tuneful Symphony No. 29 in A major.
On the April 10 program, hear 21-year-old Hong Kong-born Aristo Sham,
a rising star who, like many aspiring young pianists, gained fame through
competitions. Mr. Sham’s first prize at last June’s biennial New York International
Piano Competition included a debut recital at the Phillips Collection that
featured works by Villa-Lobos, Mozart and Schumann, as well as two impromptus
by Lowell Liebermann commissioned especially for the contestants.
Of course, pianists are not the only musicians to compete. Peruvian-born
guitarist Jorge Caballero is the youngest musician and only guitarist to have won
the Naumberg International Competition Award. Now an established performer,
Mr. Caballero offered a recital at the John E. Marlow Guitar Series that airs
April 17 with works by Albéniz, Bach, and Kazuhito Yamashita’s famous
arrangement of Modest Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition.
We close out the month on April 24 at historic Dumbarton Oaks with the
Dover Quartet. Mozart’s popular “The Hunt” quartet and Shostakovich’s 3rd
string quartet are featured, along with Caroline Shaw’s “Plan & Elevation
(The Grounds of Dumbarton Oaks),” a work inspired by Ms. Shaw’s wanderings
on the estate’s beautiful grounds and gardens.
