Grovelands Writing Process
- This writing process should always be taught regardless of the length of the
writing unit. E.g. weekly, fortnightly or a 15-minute write up.
- Teachers are adopting this process already and they are particularly focusing
on the REHEARSAL section.
- Class Teachers are using every opportunity throughout their teaching to
embed writing skills. It is being taught across the curriculum on a daily basis
and the children are learning that writing matters in every subject/book.
Superwrite and Extended Writing
- YR – Y4 are teaching SENTENCE focused writing sessions. They are
concentrating on the SOUND of a text not what it LOOKS LIKE. E.g. Letter
(formal language, present tense).
- Y5 are using text genres as a vehicle to teach writing basics.
What is SPAG?
Spelling – The children need to know how to spell a selection of age specific words using the
spelling rules taught in class.
Punctuation – The children need to know what each punctuation mark means and how it can
be used correctly in their independent writing.
Grammar and Vocabulary – The children need to know explicit grammatical terms and high
level vocabulary and then use these in their independent writing.
However, it is now called EPGS (English, Punctuation, Grammar and Spelling) but at Grovelands
we have chosen to keep the name SPAG as children associate with this.
Grammar to a writer is to a
mountaineer a good pair of hiking boots
or, more precisely, to a deep-sea diver
an oxygen tank.”
Expectations
The Government have raised expectations throughout the primary school sector and children
need to meet a higher standard then ever expected before the end of KS1 and KS2.
Changes in KS1
• There will be stronger emphasis on vocabulary development, grammar, punctuation and spelling (e.g.
the use of commas and apostrophes will be taught in KS1).
• Handwriting is assessed and is expected to be fluent, legible and speedy by the end of year 2.
Changes in KS2
• By age 11, children should be able to spell 200 complex words - including mischievous, privilege and
yacht - and use a thesaurus to develop vocabulary.
• Handwriting will be assessed and the children will need to be consistently joining their writing in all
subjects.
• By the end of year 6, children will need to know and be able to identify 78 grammar definitions and
know how to use these in their writing.

Grammar Wizard
Grammar Wizard was implemented 2 years ago to raise the SPAG profile and to
develop children’s knowledge of terms required within the curriculum.
This programme promotes and celebrates children’s understanding of the
definitions of the terms e.g. verb, comma, subject and object.
STEP 1 – Knowing
STEP 2 – Applying the knowledge they know in their
independent work and completing assessments.
How can I help my child?
• Reading – please ensure your child is reading every night at home.
• Grammar Wizard – Practise with your child each night. The grammar wizard steps that your
child is focusing on should be stuck in their reading records.
• Online Games – With parental consent, there are many online SPAG focused games.
(Topmarks and funenglishgames).
• Spelling – KS1 - Practise phonics sounds and spelling patterns. KS2 - In the back of your
child’s reading record they should have spelling lists which are relevant to the year group
which they are in. Practice these spellings as much as possible so your child feels confident
to use them in their writing.
• Writing – If the children are given writing homework please encourage them to use a
specific writing process: Think it, Say it, Write it, Read it.
- Create creative writing experiences whenever possible, e.g. shopping lists,
instructions, birthday cards, thank you letters and short stories.
