Money Saving Tips
(1) ....................................
This continent has a lot of little tiny
shops where you can buy pre-made sandwiches
or ingredients to make your own. Buy some
food, eat outside, and watch the city go
by. It’s a much more enjoyable and cheaper
way to eat.
(2) ....................................
Not into picnicking? That’s ok, there are
other ways to save money on food. Eat at
local sandwich shops, pizza parlors, Maoz,
Wok to Walks, outdoor street vendors, and
the like. Avoiding restaurants and eating
at a lot of the local ‘‘grab n’ go’’ places
will give you a taste of the local cuisine
at a much cheaper price.
(3) ....................................
Transportation can eat into your budget.
Traveling costs money. A good way to save
money
is
to
avoid
moving
in
weird
directions. Move in a straight line, and
avoid doubling back and avoid paying too
much for transportation.
(4) ....................................
Hostels can add up really quick. If you
don’t have any friends with whom you can
stay,
consider
using
the
service
Couchsurfing, which lets you connect with
locals who will let you stay with them for
free.
(5) ....................................
If you know where you are going
and a train won’t do, try to
book flights early. You can
often get round trip fares as
little as $5 USD from many of
the
discount
airlines
like
Transavia, Easyjet, Wizz, and
Ryanair. Watch out for fees
though! These airlines nickel
and dime you.
(6)
...............................
Those 5 Euro beers really add
up. Hit happy hour or pick and
choose when you party. Hostel
bars are a good place to get
cheap
drinks
or
buy
your
alcohol
at
the
supermarket.
Partying your way across the
continent
will
destroy
your
bank balance in no time.

A very good camping service is
Camp

My
Garden

which allows you to pitch a
tent in someone’s backyard for
free or a nominal fee (around
$5-10 USD). This is a new
service that started in 2010

signing up for it each day. All

entry and substantial discounts on all
the attractions and tours in a city, free

plus), and discounts at a few restaurants
and shopping malls. They save a ton of
money. In Oslo Norway, the VisitOslo card

Europe: What does it have to offer?
Europe is a large and diverse continent offering a lot for tourists. First, make a list of all
the European countries (except Austria) and write their names on little cards. Then
distribute the cards in class, so that all the cards are assigned and you all have the same
amount of cards.
Use the internet and do research to find out more about each country: 1) basic facts (capital
city, population, major cities etc) and 2) what it is famous for or what it has to offer for
tourists. Include some pictures as well.
The information you find put together on not more than three to five PowerPoint slides,
which you will then present to the rest of the class. Keep in mind the key elements of
designing PowerPoint slides: not too much information and keywords (in large print) only!
Everyone has three minutes for the presentation of each country – Make sure you prepare
what you want to say and stick to the most important things.
2D

c)
Imagine you work for the European board of tourism. Based on what you found
out in the survey in a) write a report for the head of board, who is interested in
people's travel preferences and their favourite European destinations. What are
your recommendations?
Before you start, remember the structure and layout of a report: the head, different
paragraphs with individual headings and a recommendation in your conclusion.

Europe's Cities Get
Smarter on Tourism
Smart city infrastructure is helping
Europe's cities better understand and serve
tourists.
http://newsroom.cisco.com/press-releasecontent?type=webcontent&articleId=1488545
By Joanne Taaffe | September 22 , 2014
The "Mona Lisa" is estimated to attract
15,000 visitors on average per day. Such
high traffic rates offer art-lovers
little hope of solitary contemplation of
the Louvre's most famous painting. The
story is similar across Europe's
principal museums, whether it is the
Prado in Madrid, where crowds throng to
view "Las Meninas" by Velasquez, or the
Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam where "The
Night Watchmen" by Rembrandt is the
must-see.
Yet smart-city traffic management
applications could help visitors better
plan their visit around an (1)
........................... by allowing
them to see in real-time on a mobile app
where the crowds are densest, says Jan
http://blog.airbnb.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/09/EuropeMap.jpg
Kadijk, who was the smart
cities program manager at
Platform31, the Netherlands
institute for urban and
regional issues until july
2014, and now works on smart
city solutions for
SmartSensors.me.
And indeed Amsterdam is
working on just such an
application for its museums
15
TOURISM IN EUROPE
as part of its smart city program,
according to a city spokesperson.
The city is also collaborating with the
Amsterdam Arena, which is a privatelyrun stadium that hosts concerts and (2)
........... ....................., on
ways to use smartphones to manage (3)
...................... The city and the
arena are also looking at apps that
would improve how spectators experience
events.
The use of GPS information could also
help determine which sites in a city are
visited primarily either by locals or
tourists, ‘‘The creative analysis of
which can bring new information to (4)
...............................,’’ which
could help spread tourism to new parts
of the city, points out Kadijk.
For although the primary goal of widescale smart city projects is to better
manage resources and improve the day-today lives of citizens, well-managed,
culturally rich cities with good
infrastructure also attract visitors.
Smart cities could prove better placed
to develop tourism, which continues to
be a source of growth in particular for
Europe's cities. […]
Europe is also set to play a (5)
.......................................
in developing smart cities […]. Some
European cities are even turning their
smart infrastructure research into (6)
................................. .
In March this year, for example,
President Obama became the highest
profile tourist to visit Amsterdam's 3D
Print Canal House Project. The smart
city project aims to build a full-scale
model of one of the city's canal houses
out of 3D printed parts with dimensions
of up to 2 meters x 2 meters x 3.5
meters. Visitors pay to visit the
construction site, thereby funding the
three-year endeavor.
Tourism applications are also becoming
an element of regional smart city
projects. The Smart Tourism Lead pilot,
for example, which is part-funded by the
European Commission, aims to make it
easier for developers to build tourism
apps based on public data. Initially
started in Lisbon and extended in the
summer of 2013 to Amsterdam, Rome,
Helsinki and Larnia, the pilot sets out
to encourage the development
of location-based mobile
services for tourists, using
open data from public and
private bodies. The idea is
that cities can provide open
data to third parties more
cheaply than they can build
tourism apps.
However, since Europe's
cities tend to make public
data available in different
formats, it can be difficult
for developers to use it to
create applications that work
in different cities. The
project sets out to offer
developers a CitySDK Tourism
API, which ensures their
applications will be portable
to all cities that provide a
CitySDK Tourism interface to
their data.
In the meantime developers
are already using GPS data to
create applications that
offer Europe's tourists a
different take on a popular
destination.
BikeCityGuide is an app
developed by two former bike
couriers, which shows routes
around more than thirty
European cities that are (7)
.............................
.............. or which cover
sites of interest.
And the founders of Nostalgeo
are calling on inhabitants of
Europe's cities to send in
old postcards or photos
depicting local streets.
Nostalgeo will make the
pictures available via a
mobile application so that
tourists can see how the
street they are walking down
looked in the past.
In the meantime, smart city
projects that aim to create
greener energy consumption or
improve the use of (8)
............................
............................
can be used by tourists. (9)
................ in the
Amsterdam area, for example,
16
TOURISM IN EUROPE
are being equipped with a system to
display which carriages on an incoming
train that have empty seats, says
Kadijk.
And the city of Amsterdam has also
installed 200 (10)
........................................
in its harbor so that boats can rely on
renewable energy sources for their power
supply rather than on-board (11)
............................... ...... .
The captain of a boat who wants to use a
green energy source when visiting
Amsterdam can activate a connection with
the power point via a mobile app, and
then enter a personal code; the amount
of money owed will be transferred
automatically from the vessel's account.
However, although such a scheme can be
used by tourists, they need
an account with the harbor
authorities.
Indeed as smart cities take
root then authorities will
have to do more to make their
initiatives readily available
to tourists, believes Kadijk,
starting by making sure that
there are English language
versions of their
applications.
‘‘Not many initiatives are
specific to tourists... and
it is not always as
transparent for tourists as
it could be,’’ says Kadijk.

(BRUSSELS) - Swimmers wanting to take the plunge this

covered by its 2013 survey was at acceptable levels.
The number of European bathing areas with "excellent" water
quality also rose by 3.6 percentage points last year from 2012
levels to 82.6 percent.
EEA Executive Director Han Bruyninckx said

today.
But in Europe's over 6,000 "inland" bathing destinations,
mainly lakes and rivers, water quality is dripping away, with 90
percent of areas rated as having "sufficient" standards, down
1.2 percent from 2012 levels.
(4) .................................................... had "poor" water quality,
the survey found. The remainder were not included in the
survey, which covered EU member countries as well as
Switzerland and Albania.

Malta, with water quality levels at 98.9
percent, Croatia (94.9 percent) and Greece
(93.2 percent), followed by Germany (89.9
percent) and Italy (87.2 percent).
The highest rates of "poor or non-compliant"
bathing waters were in Estonia, where 5.7
percent of areas surveyed fell short of
acceptable quality standards, followed by the
Netherlands (5.1 percent) and Belgium (3.5
percent).
(6)........................................................were
even worse, with 8.2 percent of water deemed
"inadequate" for swimming, although the
country wasn't directly compared to the rest
of Europe as it was included in the survey for
the first time.
The survey was compiled from water samples
taken during the 2013 bathing season from
waters across Europe. (7) .........................
