The Collapse of the Soviet Union – 19.3
Part 1: Creating a Timeline:
Read pages 612-617. As you read, create a basic timeline chronicling at least 12 major events, people, or policies
that took place in the Soviet Union that led to its breakup. You will be listing those across the top of your page in a
normal timeline style labeling the general date and title. Use Google Drawings to do this. Login through
https://myplan.powayusd.com to access your Google account. Here is the link to the template you can use to help
you get started. You first have to “save a copy” of this file so you can edit it. Once you are done with your timeline,
you will need to export it from Google Drawings as a .jpeg (which is an image file) – Go to File/Dowload as…/.jpeg.
You will need this timeline for the next part of the assignment.

exported as a .jpeg, then you can insert it at the top of your Google Doc – Watch this video to learn how.
Part 3: The Rest of the Google Doc
Below your timeline, each event, person, or policy should have a picture associated with it, a title and a summary of

The Domino Effect – The effect of the collapse of the Soviet Union on the rest
of the world
The world is interconnected. When something major happens to one country, especially a superpower like the
Soviet Union, then it has an effect on all of the smaller countries that relied on that larger country for support.
When the Soviet Union collapsed, the whole world was affected by it, but those countries closely tied to the Soviet
Union were hit the hardest.
Your job is to research the Effect of the Collapse of the Soviet Union on many of its smaller partners. Below is a list
of smaller countries that were directly related to the Soviet Union. Choose 3 of them:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
Eastern Europe
North Korea
North Vietnam
Cuba
Iran
Afghanistan
Germany
Describe how those countries were affected by the collapse of the Soviet Union. Write your answers in an
annotated bibliography. The format for an annotated bibliography is as follows:
