Joseph Kibur
Distance Runner
Born:
Joseph Kibur did not know a word of French or English when he emigrated in Canada in 1983 as an 11year-old from the Gondar region of Ethiopia. He took up distance running and worked hard to catch up
with his classmates academically. His running career kicked off when at age 13, he finished third in a 4k
race at the GMAA cross-country championships.
Montreal businessman Harry Hus took Kibur under his wing, providing him with running shoes and
introducing him to the junior Maccabiah Games in 1986. Kibur also participated in the Pan Am
Maccabiah Games in 1987, followed by the junior Maccabiah Games again in 1988.
His success in athletics paid off upon graduating from high school and he landed a scholarship to join
Simon Fraser University in Burnaby, B.C. in 1990. While at SFU, he showed his athletic abilities, winning
several cross-country races. By 1991, at age 19, he won gold in the 5k at the PanAm junior track and
field championships in Kingston, Jamaica, clocking in at 14:47.19.
in 1993, he was the Canadian cross-country champion, winning the 12k race in 37:30 at Vancouver, B.C.
He represented Canada at the world cross-country championships as a junior in 1989 and 1991 and ran
in the senior division in 1994.
At the 1989 event, in Stavanger, Norway, he was Canada’s second-best junior, finishing 38th overall in
the 8k race with a time of 27:22. In the 1991 race, held at Antwerp, he was the country’s top junior,
completing the 8.415k loop in 25:52. At the 1994 worlds, held in at Budapest, he was the country’s sixthbest runner, completing the 12.06k course in 39:07.
Kibur also competed at the Maccabiah Games and is arguably among the greatest Canadian Maccabi
runners of all time, winning three gold medals at the 1993 Games. Seeded fourth in the 5000m, he
passed five runners with only 100m remaining to win the event by one-tenth of a second over Dov
Kremer, the Israeli champion who had competed at the Barcelona Olympics. Kibur ran the last lap in just
54 seconds.
In the 1500m, he took the lead with 300m remaining and held on to edge Kremer by 0.56 seconds. The
10k was no contest as Kibur completed the race in 30:07, winning by a 48-second margin over fellow
Ethiopian Asaf Bimer.
In a documentary, Joseph stated that Maccabi is where he “learned to be a person”. Maccabi Canada
was his support system. He has gone on to give back both here and in Ethiopia.
Up on graduation from SFU in 1996 in Business and Mathematics, Kibur launched
NetNation Communications, Inc., a Vancouver based web-hosting company, which became a Nasdaq
traded company in 1999, and at the height of the tech boom, the market value of the company was over
$350 million CAD. At its peak, NN employed more than 120 people, out of whom more than a dozen
were Ethiopians. Joseph gave employment opportunities to qualified local Ethiopians. Many tech
companies disappeared in the tech dot-com bust of early 2000′s, however, NN continued its business
due to mostly Kibur’s leadership.
In 2003, NN was sold for $10 million US. Kibur did not just sit down idle since selling his company, rather
he has been working diligently, running many projects; from real estate development to online
businesses. Kibur has set up a non-profit organization to help disadvantaged children in Ethiopia. He is
funding this effort out of his own initiatives. In addition to the many businesses he is currently running,
Kibur is a dedicated family man raising his three children.
