“I know I could do the work, but
without a diploma, I can’t get the job.”
“Years ago, I had to leave school so I
could work to help support the family.”
“At the time, I didn’t see the point in
school, and I thought I would
get on with my life.”
If you have said what these people have
said, you may need to do what they have
done. They have enrolled in Jefferson
County High School, the Jefferson County
Public School (JCPS) District’s free high
school program for adults and young adults
16 years of age and older.
Jefferson County High School offers
a chance for individuals to earn a high
school diploma at their own pace in a location and at a time that are convenient for
them. Students may enter at any time of
the year; attend classes on a flexible schedule, while holding a job or attending to
family responsibilities; and graduate when
they have met district requirements.
Description of Program
Students entering the program attend orientation at the Dawson Orman Education Center
and take a placement test to determine their
abilities in the areas of reading and mathematics. If the student scores:
• Below the 6.0 grade level (beginning of
sixth grade), the student is referred back
to his or her resides school.
• Above the 6.0 grade level but below the
8.5 grade level (middle of eighth grade),
the student begins by taking courses to refresh basic skills until the 8.5 grade level
is reached.
• At the 8.5 grade level or higher, the
student begins taking high-school-level
courses.
Each Jefferson County High School student
works with a counselor to develop an individual graduation plan so that the student
may build upon any credits previously
earned and take the courses needed to meet
graduation requirements.
