Celebrating
accomplishments was
a big discussion point
at a family breakfast
this past weekend.
My daughter had just
arrived home from a
week skiing in Japan.
She had only skied once
before so she talked us
through her progress
over the week. Gillian started with classes each
morning and then went off to practice her skills
in the afternoon. As the week progressed, she
improved slowly by challenging herself (I can
understand the slowly part as skiing is not one
of my strong points!). We were part of this
progress through conversations on Viber and
we celebrated her achievements with her. This
is not a standalone event – each day we have
challenges to overcome and it is the support we
receive and practice we do that helps us move to
new levels.
Tuesday 8 March
Each day at school there are wonderful examples
of achieving and celebrating accomplishments.
I had a wonderful surprise on Monday morning
when I heard two Year 1 students at the Student
Services asking if I was there. I invited them
in and to my delight one of the students had
brought her ‘recount’ writing to share with me.
After she read it to me, we celebrated the work
she had completed, by giving each other a High
5 as well as adding a sticker to the wonderful
work. Last year I had the Prep students lined up
at my door on a weekly basis to show me their
latest work which was always better than the
week before. We celebrated in a simple way but
the students felt important and encouraged to
do better the next time.
It is this type of attitude we foster and encourage
at St Peters where students are asked to do their
Community Celebration (Theme: Leaps and Bounds),

best work, and then continue to build upon the
skills they have learnt. Sometimes they are small
steps, other times there are huge bounds but
each step is important in the learning journey.
Students throughout the year will be recognised
for their academic, social, sport and music
accomplishments with our Principal Awards and
You Can Do It Awards. But more important than
these are the celebrations that happen on a daily
basis in the classroom where the students and
teachers are excited and motivated by reaching
their goals. Every Primary class displays weekly
goals to aim ‘ever higher’ and then strategies are
put in place to support each student achieving
the goals.
We look forward to working with our
families to celebrate the achievements and
accomplishments our students make over the
year in 2016.
Yours in Christ

Assembly
For the next four weeks we will hold our Lower Primary Assembly in a different week to the Upper
Primary Assembly. This week we held Lower Primary, with Upper Primary the following week. These
will be held in the Performing Arts Building in the large performance room (PA1). Your child’s Pastoral
Care teacher will let you know when these are. Once The Hub is completed we will join together as a
Primary group for our Assembly time.

Congratulations to the class representatives who were elected for Term 1. We meet once a fortnight
to celebrate what great things we have at St Peters Springfield plus also listen to ideas to support our
programs. Our Year 6 students are on the Executive team and help to organise the meetings. This
year our School Captains will continue to attend these meetings.

MINISTRY
Built on Solid Rock
The decision to build a Lutheran College at the
end of World War II in Brisbane was very brave.
At the time, the Lutheran Church had only four
congregations in Brisbane. The clear majority
of members lived in the rural areas of the
state. The Lutheran name was also associated
with Germans. The far sighted founders chose
Brisbane over Toowoomba – a decision that has
been well vindicated, and has led to the growth
we see today. What name to choose? St Peters
at Indooroopilly is built on rock (Brisbane schist
to be precise). Jesus gave his disciple Simon the
nickname Peter (meaning 'Rocky'). The name of
St Peters was also a sign of trust that God would
provide. In Luke 5:5, Simon and his mates had
caught no fish all night. After Jesus had spoken
with the crowd, he told the fishermen to put
out into deep water and let down the nets for a
catch. They did so only because of respect for the
teacher. It was the wrong time and place for fish
to be. They let down the nets, and they became
so full of fish they started to break. The church
in 1944 stepped out in faith, ’let down the nets’,
and the initial appeal for £10,000 was strongly
over-subscribed.
This, then, is how you ought to regard us: as
servants of Christ and as those entrusted with
the mysteries God has revealed. Now it is
required that those who have been given a trust
must prove faithful. 1 Corinthians V 4
Toohey Forest is one of the few remaining green
zones in Brisbane, harbouring native plants
and animals once common across South-East
Queensland. This “little piece of heaven” was
the venue for our first Year 10 field-trip. Field
studies are an essential component of the senior
Biology course, and provide students with the
opportunities to observe and experience, the
application of research principles in the real
world. The study of the environment can enable
us to not only understand the world we inhabit
– but also to develop an awareness of the
interconnectedness of life.
While at the Toohey Forest Environmental
Education Centre our science class learned how
to use field guides to identify flora and fauna,
as well as using data loggers to record abiotic
data (such as air and soil temperatures). I was
proud of our students who engaged actively with
the presenters and program and demonstrated
creative thinking and co-operative research skills.
The final challenge from this trip requires the
students to evaluate the data they have collected
and reflect on whether choices made at the
local level can potentially enhance or reduce
the possible impacts of climate change. I look
forward to reading their discussions of this issue!
In Matthew 7: 24-27, Jesus contrasts building
your house on rock, or shifting sand. St Peters
has always worked with students to encourage
faith and trust, so that people do not just say
the right thing, but put it into action. Just as
Jesus was a king who showed his power in
humble service, so St Peters students over many
years have worked for what is good and right.
The foundation for that is the rock solid love,
forgiveness and worth gifted to us through Jesus’
death and resurrection. That is the rock we
built on.

YEAR 7 CAMP
MUSIC NEWS
Performing Arts Building
Last week, 7S and 7T travelled to Tallebudgera for the first school camp of the year. It was really fun
and a great opportunity for us to get to know each other. Everybody loved the water based activities,
like stand up paddle boarding and body surfing, because the water was so nice and it was a lot of fun
getting wet. We also tried rock climbing, archery and fencing. Each night we had a delicious dinner
and group activity. On our first night we had a movie night and on the second night we had a trivia
competition, where ‘The Champions’ (Daniel, Jake, David, Michael, Ashwin and Aodhan) came out in
first place. Thank you to Mr Cadman, Mrs Wise and Miss Vizcay-Wilson for coming with us.
Daniel Storey and Grace Thompson, Year 7 students
After watching our new home evolve during the
past few weeks, the major excitement in our
Music world this week has been the move into
our new home, the Performing Arts Building.
The Performing Arts Building houses two music
classrooms, a music storeroom, sports storage/
workroom and a large performance space which
will be used for classes, ensemble rehearsals
and concerts.
It was exciting to watch our old classroom
(MB06) being emptied, and our new spaces
taking shape. Students were keen to assist with
this process, and due to their efforts the rooms
are ready to accommodate classes by the end of
the day.
Bringing this project to fruition has been a
big task, and I would like to acknowledge the
guidance of Jill Lange-Mohr, and the efforts of
our workman, Tate Christian. We are grateful
to Gary Evans and the Works Crew from
Indooroopilly and IT Department, who continue
to put the “finishing touches” on the building.
And finally, the Most Awesome Class Award of
the week must go to Year 8T, who transferred
the contents of MB06 and storeroom (the “old”
Music classroom) to the Performing Arts Block in
40 minutes. Congratulations and thanks for your
hard work, students.

St Peters 5B
The Years 4 and 5 Springfield cricket team played an invitational fixture against Ambrose Treacy on
Saturday and were defeated by 68 runs. Ambrose Treacy scored 2/123 off 25 overs and St Peters
batted with a lot of patience and defensive shots to score 5/55 in reply. Hunter McFarlane (1/8) and
Aiden McKendrick (1/16) were both rewarded with a wicket each and Liam Mitchell went agonisingly
close to taking a couple of wickets in his spell. Nick Denny fielded well throughout the match and
grasped an important catch at covers. Well done to all boys who played on Saturday. They are all
continually improving.
