Lena’s Market joined the Fresh Foods Here
program in 2014. A busy corner store on Broad Street in the Hilltop
neighborhood, Lena’s never had trouble attracting customers. Yazan,
the store’s owner, joined Fresh Foods Here because he believed the lack
of access to nutritious foods was an important issue in his community.
Lena’s quickly became one of the highest performing stores in the FFH
network, as Yazan added new healthy items to his inventory and used
FFH’s marketing tools to make those items available and attractive to
customers. The store also went above and beyond in making fresh food
available to neighborhood kids by providing fruit as a snack to families
on their way to school and to youth programs, free of charge.
Since the beginning of the FFH partnership, Lena’s has had a steady
increase in customers and transactions. Surveys have shown that
customers’ knowledge of healthy eating habits and their confidence in
adopting these habits has increased.
Recently, Lena’s partnered with the Highland Youth Garden to offer produce grown in the community
garden to customers. Popular items from the garden include collard greens, tomatoes and potatoes. All items
are grown as a part of educational programming provided to children in the Hilltop neighborhood. Lena’s is
a great example of how a FFH store can build community and become a trusted neighborhood resource for
healthy food.
