HOW A PRISOhrER FITS INTO TEE PRISON S Y S E M
presented by Peter Severin of the
QueensIand Corrective Services C o d s s i o n
on 30 March 1993
Mr Severjn spoke about the process involved in the induction o f a new
prisoner inm the system. This process applies to all prjsons throughout the
State. The various steps are set out on the attachedpages.
Efforts are made t o meet the needs of non-English speaking prisoners, and
written infomation is printed in six languages. Interpreters are made
available t o others, although funds are limited.
Security classifications are def ermined through a points system. However,
this system is presently under review, to eradicate some of the anomalies,
All prisoners are given the Prisonerst Handbook, which gives details on such
matters as legal advice, duty lawyer visjt-s, prison administration procedures,
parole, counselling, classification, health efc. M r Severin sajd that if a
prisoner was illiterate or did not speak English, help was availabIe to access
these services.
