Q1/C The speaker says: “The beautiful unspoilt coastlines and breathtaking architecture have doubled as an amazing variety of locations on the big and small screens [...].” The correct answer is C (that have featured in various films). Q2/A The speaker says: “So why Malta? The islands offer many advantages to film makers, the same as those you can experience as a tourist.” The correct answer is A (have similar reasons for liking Malta). Q3/I The speaker says: “It is a beautiful and very clear sunlight particularly suitable for filming and photography; some directors say it’s very similar to the light you can find in Hollywood, making it easier to blend scenes shot in California with those filmed in Malta.” The correct answer is I (can be matched with Maltese scenes). Q4/H The speaker says: “The variety of the natural and urban landscapes makes it easy to create a period movie such as Troy as well as a contemporary urban one like Munich.” The correct answer is H (make it perfect for all kinds of films). Q5/K The speaker says: “Third, the Mediterranean atmosphere. [...] you can really enjoy the unique Mediterranean flavour with the advantages of being in a very relaxing and liveable environment.” The correct answer is K (creates a stress free atmosphere). Q6/D The speaker says: “Malta is particularly suitable for period movies thanks to the ancient cities, bastions [...]. Malta requires very few historical adornments. Coming to Malta is like going back in time both for tourists and film makers.” The correct answer is D (to turn it into a historic film set). Lösungen Hören E (HUM) HT 2012/13 4 Q7/E The speaker says: “In Malta everyone speaks fluent English and this makes it easy for American and English film makers to work here. Maltese people are friendly and sociable so filming crews can work in a relaxed and safe atmosphere.” The correct answer is E (because communication with locals is made easy). Q8/F The speaker says: “Moreover, Malta has a unique feature for film makers; the gigantic water tanks of the Mediterranean Film Studios [...], where synthetic storms and spectacular naval battles featuring full scale ships can be filmed.” The correct answer is F (is an added extra for film makers). Task 2: Online shopping boosts economy before Christmas Key 0 F Q9 H Q10 B Q11 G Q12 J Q13 E Q14 D Q15 C Justifications 0/F The speakers say: AUDIE CORNISH, host: "According to spending polls, which tracks retails sales, Americans spent about $584 billion in the 50 days leading up to Christmas." ROBERT SIEGEL, host: "That amount is not all in gifts. It does include things like gasoline and food. But it's an increase of 5.5 percent over the same period last year.” The correct answer is F (more money than the previous year). Q9/H The speaker says: “And that is the biggest gain since 2005. Online sales saw an even bigger boost this holiday season with a 15.4 percent increase over last year.” The correct answer is H (increased much more than shopping in general). Q10/B The speaker says: “Well, we were spending a lot of it on clothes, certainly. […] Computers, obviously, brands like Apple continue to gain.” The correct answer is B (fashion and electronics). Q11/G The speaker says: “Well, basically online sales now make up about six to seven percent of overall retail sales.” The correct answer is G (are made via the internet). Q12/J The speaker says: “Even myself, I went into Rockefeller Center this week. I pulled out my smartphone. There was a Lego sale. I noticed immediately that it was much cheaper on Amazon. People are going to be doing that more and more, standing in the stores and actually comparing prices.” The correct answer is J (they are out shopping). Lösungen Hören E (HUM) HT 2012/13 5 Q13/E The speaker says: “I think it also is something that may be troubling in terms of job growth, and especially when you look at commercial retail. Basically what's happened in the real estate sector suggests that perhaps this is still a country that is, quote, “over-stored”. There are chances we're going to see more store closures, as more Americans feel comfortable just doing a lot of their shopping by computer.” The correct answer is E (will go out of business). Q14/D The speaker says: “Because shopping online employs fewer people on the other end, and it requires less high-rent commercial retail space.” Towards the end of the text, the speaker adds: “We’re taking jobs away from the people who used to fold our sweaters for us and used to check out our goods.” The correct answer is D (will not be needed anymore). Q15/C The speaker says: “When you look at survey after survey, consumers who shop online tend to report higher satisfaction levels.” The correct answer is C (they are content with the service). Task 3: A new kind of snowboard pants Key 0 C Q16 B Q17 A Q18 A Q19 D Q20 D Q21 B Q22 C Justifications 0/C The speaker says: “You may not be able to attack the side of a mountain like the snowboarder Shaun White but you can at least attempt to look like the Olympic gold medalist. This fall, for $250, you'll be able to get a pair of the snowboard pants that he and the U.S. team wore at the Vancouver Olympics, the ones that you may have thought were ripped up jeans.” The correct answer is C (buy pants that look torn). A is not correct because you just have to wear the pants, not the entire outfit. B is not correct because the pants cost $250. D is not correct because it says that snowboarding well is not a precondition. Q16/B The speaker says: “They were based, actually, on a pair of my own denim, one of my favorite pairs.” The correct answer is B (a pair of pants that belonged to him). A is not correct because Shaun White is mentioned as the person who wore the new snowboard pants. C is not correct because it just says that the jeans are high tech, and that they were based on his own. D is not correct because the jeans look as if they had been taken out of the laundry basket. Lösungen Hören E (HUM) HT 2012/13 Q17/A The speaker says: “And through a process called photo sublimation, we were actually able to print them onto a very sort of high tech Gore-Tex fabric.” The correct answer is A (a highly developed product). B is not correct because it does not say that all girls will like them. C is not correct because it just says that they look like a pair of jeans. D is not correct because it does not say that they are ideal for older snowboarders. Q18/A The speaker says: “You actually take a picture of an actual full pair of denim, almost like a giant photograph. And then through a process of extreme heat, you actually print a photograph directly onto a pair of pants.” The correct answer is A (use high temperatures). B is not correct because bright colors are not mentioned. C is not correct because you need to have a giant photograph, but it does not say that it has to be waterproof. D is not correct because the picture is printed onto high-tech Gore-Tex material. Q19/D The speaker says: “We wanted to do something that was really very American, but again, was very true to snowboarding and this idea of there's nothing more quintessential or iconic to American fashion is a great pair of jeans.” The correct answer is D (believed the style of them is typical of the USA). A is not correct because it does not say that Shaun White asked them to do so. B is not correct because it says they wanted to do something American, but the team is not mentioned. C is not correct because it does not say that they wanted to challenge other companies, but that the making was a challenge. Q20/D The speaker says: “And we just received hundreds of calls from consumers and initially we weren't planning on selling the pant, but being a rider-driven company, we really want to do things that our customers want us to do.” The correct answer is D (customer demand). A is not correct because the fashion trend is not mentioned. B is not correct because no kids are mentioned. C is not correct because the effort they put into them is not mentioned as a reason for selling the pants. Q21/B The speaker says: “250, that's right. And I think anyone that sort of gets them will be incredibly happy with not only the aesthetic of them, but the performance on them.” The correct answer is B (their fantastic quality). A is not correct because it does not mention the number of pants produced. C is not correct because it does not say that people like them because of the Olympics. D is not correct because it does not say that people like them because of the label but because they are something different. 6 Lösungen Hören E (HUM) HT 2012/13 7 Q22/C The speaker says: “No, I made very, very clear that those that pair of jeans had to come back intact.” The correct answer is C (had to be returned undamaged). A is not correct because it does not say that they are exhibited but they are still worn. B is not correct because it says that they are still in rotation and an essential part of the speaker’s wardrobe. D is not correct because they are still worn by their owner.
