Prereq: MAT 091 or placement. Four exams and a comprehensive final will be given. If you miss an exam there is a 10% late penalty. The Final Exam will be Proctored. You can take it on specific dates I will post later in the semester or find an approved proctor at your location if not close to Flagstaff. Goals n n To build student confidence in the use of algebraic skills to expand and reinforce concepts previously learned. To have students develop a positive attitude toward mathematics and to build algebraic skills in the listed areas. Group Discussions Requirements n n n rd Introductory and Intermediate Algebra, by Akst & Bragg, 3 edition, 2012. (can be purchased as a hard copy or as an online copy only) MyMathLab (either comes with your book or can be purchased alone online.) Evaluation and Grading Scale n n n n You will be required to be an active participant in group discussions for every unit Group work counts towards 10% of your grade. n n n n n 90% to 100% is A 80% to 89.4% is B 70% to 79.4% is C 60% to 69.4% is D Below 60% is F MyMathLab Homework All homework must be completed at MML. A 3-credit hour course requires 6 hours of class work outside of class. Please set aside the time so you can succeed in this course. 24-Hour Rule: If you do your homework within 24 hours of the lesson you will retain 80% of the knowledge (vs. only 30%)! I reserve the right to make any modifications, additions, deletions to the syllabus and course requirements with reasonable notification. Start a study group with your classmates. Attendance I will take attendance each week based on your participation in the discussions and completion of assignments. If a student has 2-3 weeks of absences and has not contacted me, I may drop them from class. Guidelines for the Exams nn Exam dates are given the first day of class. Please make sure to have all the exams completed on time. You may NOT work with another student on the test. Exams that look like students worked together will be given a grade of zero. nn All homework will be due the day of the exam. nn You are allowed ONE Formula Sheet for the test. NO examples are allowed on this notecard. nn The notecard must be completed BEFORE the test date. Please do not come into class to take the final exam trying to complete the notecard. nn While taking the test, you may have a pencil, calculator (not an electronic device) and your formula sheet out. All other materials must be put away. nn Please be prepared to stay in the classroom during your testing time. When you are done with the test you may leave. nn Testing Environment and Math Anxiety: To make the tests as relaxed as possible please arrive for the final on time, make sure your cell phone is turned off, your desk area is cleared and you are ready to start the test on time. Course Outcomes The student will: nn Simplify rational expressions and solve rational equations. nn Solve and graph absolute value equations. nn Graph linear inequalities. nn Graph elementary non-linear equations. nn Identify graphs of functions. nn Evaluate functions at values of x. nn Solve systems of three equations. nn Solve various inequalities including compound, polynomial, rational, and absolute value. nn Simplify radical expressions and solve radical equations. nn Solve quadratic equations using factoring, completing the square and quadratic formula. nn Graph quadratic equations and analyze the graph. nn Perform operations with functions including the inverse. nn Analyze exponential and logarithmic functions. nn Solve logarithmic and exponential equations. nn Solve various application problems involving concepts taught in the course.
