Exhibitions at Country Life
Our exhibitions have strong links to the Primary SESE History
curriculum – and other subjects including Visual Art, English and
SPHE.
Turlough Park House was formerly the
home of the Fitzgerald family.
The original drawing room and library
of this Victorian Gothic ‘Big House’ are
furnished as they may have looked in
1900.
The Museum is surrounded by
beautiful and extensive grounds
featuring broadleaf woodlands,
grassy terraces, river, lake and
formal gardens.
The grounds are also home to our
House-Building Project, which is
located beside the main car park.
This wattle-and-daub thatched
structure showcases the materials
and techniques used in the building
of traditional cottages. There is an
explanatory panel nearby.
Don’t forget our twenty-minute
audio-visual introductory film.
This archive footage tells the story of
the National Folklife Collection and
traditional way of life in rural Ireland.
The auditorium seats 60 people.

An exhibition trail of Gallery Seating
designed and made by students of
Galway Mayo Institute of Technology,

Fighting Words Mayo at the National Museum of Ireland
Fighting Words Mayo works with students of all ages to develop their creative writing skills, explore their love of writing
and to let their imaginations run free. Our friendly and relaxed storytelling workshops support the aims of the DES Literacy
and Numeracy Strategy and are DCU approved.
In 2016/17 Fighting Words Mayo will run two FREE workshops each month for Primary schools. These workshops will take
place at the Museum of Country Life where your class can take avail of additional activities and resources.
Fighting Words Mayo is affiliated to the creative writing
centre established by Roddy Doyle and Sean Love and
is the first Fighting Words community in Ireland outside
of Dublin.
“Fighting Words is an interactive, stimulating, co-operative, fun way of writing that captured the children’s imagination.
At the end of the process the children were so excited to see the fruit of their work with a beautifully illustrated
professional book that they had written! The sense of ‘we are now published authors’ was exhilarating!”
Dr Maura Thornton, Breaffy National School.
