I think it’s longer than our pool. There are so many people in the stands. The blocks look so high. These kids are all bigger than me. Are my goggles going to fall off? What if I miss the wall? What if I can’t hear the starter? Why is my stomach doing flip-flops? OKAY. Here goes… Cap on right…check Goggles on tight and not fogging up…check 100 Freestyle…not breaststroke…check 3 or 4 short whistles means “swimmers ready”…check 1 long whistle means “swimmers step up”…check TAKE YOUR MARK…means bend and grab the block…check BEEP means go…check Oh yeah…GO!!! Good news…good dive and goggles are still on. Wow!!! The wall’s here already. Ooops! Got a little too close for that turn. Hey!!! I’m right with everyone. OK. That turn was better. Whew!!! Legs are hurting a bit. But I’ve got more in them. Cough, spit, gurgle…note to self…breathe the air, not the water. I’m still with everyone… There’s the wall…almost done. Head down…fast hands…fast kick Hey! Where’d those butterflies in my stomach go? Reeeaaach…Finish Hard!!!! Phew!!!! Breathe…Breathe… I wonder what my time was? That wasn’t so bad… Hey!!! That’s my best time… Not bad at all…Why was I so nervous??? - B. Pacheco Anxiety. The 2 million butterflies flying around in your stomach right before all of your races. We all get ‘em. But, how many times can you still feel them once you hit the water? They’re gone and you’ve got other things on your mind…or you should. We all get nervous before we swim. It means you’re excited. It means you care about how you do. It means you want to succeed. Remember, you know how to do this. You’ve been to lots of practices. You’re not perfect, but you’re working on it. And, you swim 10 times as much in practice as you do in swim meets, so how scary can a swim meet really be. So, come on. Give it a try. You’re not going to believe how easy it really is and you’re going to kick yourself for being so nervous in the first place. -- Coach Brett, Coach Evan, and Coach Parker -- “What I give, I always have.
