We are surrounded tonight by the relics of Maryland’s amazing history, to reflect on the past and celebrate the future. This night is dedicated to the possibilities. Our honorees have dedicated their lives and work to being AMAZING. Our scholars are all striving for it. Our Financial Rockstar Academy students envision it. And you have joined us tonight because you too believe in the potential to Be AMAZING. This year’s theme, “Unlock Your Inner Art” is about vision and perspective. Art changes the way we view things: the way we view ourselves and the world around us. Art empowers us to Be AMAZING. It challenges us to think and feel and stretch beyond what we know or believe to be true. Whether or not we are master artists, there is art inside of us all. In that inner art is your power to Be AMAZING. Our goal tonight, is to raise funds which will allow us to expand our Financial Rockstar Academy and fuel the Kahdine Ann DaCosta Scholarship for Excellence in Leadership. Our students and scholars are the future. Please enjoy the evening knowing that your support is empowering all youth to unlock their greatest potential. All the BEST! Makenzie L. Lawson Vice President BE AMAZING! 1ST ANNUAL FUNDRAISING GALA & SILENT AUCTION 5 How far does your daughter have to go to get online? Very few of us will be able to recall ever being told that our purpose in life is to be just that…amazing! Amazing is risky and is often proceeded by gut-wrenching failures; but that’s where the magic happens. For those who are brave enough to weather the storm, there is victory on the other side. I once heard a wise saying that simply stated, “You cannot ruin your life, you can only waste it”. Those words are thought provoking and have been restated in many different ways. How do we waste our lives? The answer is quite simple: by settling for a mediocre existence that doesn’t positively influence the life of others. We believe that the greatest influence that we can have on the lives of others lies within the thoughts that we leave behind. 2014 marks ten years since Kahdine Ann DaCosta lost her battle with breast cancer at the tender age of 26. Kahdine was only given a very short amount of time to make an impact on the lives of others, and that she did. In her absence, I Am O’Kah! was established on two words that she left behind: scholarship and mentorship. Today, her spirit lives within each and every one of our programs. What will they say when you are gone? Steve Jobs, Co-Founder of Apple Computers, often mentioned that everyone should be focused on leaving their own unique dent in the universe. This task demands that your life be fueled by a purpose; your unique purpose. That thing that separates you from everyone else is what we would like to coin your inner art. Our first annual gala is themed Unlock Your Inner Art, because we are inviting you to release yourself from all false expectations of who you are meant to be in order to get in touch with your life’s purpose and Be AMAZING! Some of us will be born with attributes and opportunities that will set us up to do something amazing; others will have to learn how to change our perspective of what is possible. I Am O’Kah!’s flagship program the Financial Rockstar Academy, uses entrepreneurship and financial literacy to teach children self-confidence and encourage them to dare to embrace their greatest potential. Just like art challenges the perspective of the beholder, it is our mission to challenge the status quo and nurture our youth to be all that they are meant to become. On this night, May 17, 2014, we will reflect on the life of Kahdine Ann DaCosta and the work of the organization built in her honor. Thank you for joining us as we honor those that embody the spirit of I Am O’Kah! Unlock Your Inner Art! Aisha D.DaCosta Executive Director BE AMAZING! 1ST ANNUAL FUNDRAISING GALA & SILENT AUCTION 7 THE LIFE THAT INSPIRED I AM O’KAH! As the first of eight siblings to attend college, Kahdine left New York to come to Baltimore in 1995 to attend Morgan State University. During her college years, Kah (pronounced Kay) felt a bit lost, she didn’t have an active support system to guide her through her college experience, especially the first years. In the back of her mind, she carried these thoughts with her. The need: to provide students with not only scholarship, but also mentoring through their first years of college. Kahdine Ann DaCosta Sunrise: October 15, 1977 After her passing, Kahdine’s family, like so many others, Sunset: February 05, 2004 focused their energy on the fight against breast cancer. Halfway through the last breast cancer walk her younger sister Aisha realized, this wasn’t how she wanted to remember her sister. Each one of these walks was only mourning Kah’s loss and not celebrating her life. Aisha’s purpose: to find a way to honor Kahdine; the woman whose spirit was infectious. Filled with the spirit of her sister’s zeal for philanthropy, Aisha embarked on a new mission to keep her sister’s legacy alive. It was there, in May of 2011, on an Air Force base in Germany, that I AM O’KAH! was born. I AM O’KAH!, and the Kahdine Ann DaCosta Scholarship for Excellence in Leadership is about destiny. It is about the destiny to living an amazing life. Regardless of the circumstance, we are all meant to be amazing. This is the legacy of Kahdine Ann DaCosta and the driving force of I AM O’KAH! The Kahdine Ann DaCosta Scholarship for Excellence in Leadership is facilitated and administered through the College Bound foundation. All complete scholarship applications are scored and ranked based on an exacting criterion, which includes academic potential, demonstrated leadership and community involvement. Every year two recipients are chosen to receive a one thousand dollar ($1,000) non-renewable scholarship. Our Scholars 2012 recipients: Asha Elmore and Ericka Miller 2013 recipients: Morgan Greene and Thaakirah Cason 2014 recipients: Cody Dorsey and Cameron Brown * * Sponsored in part by Anthony Management Group BE AMAZING! 1ST ANNUAL FUNDRAISING GALA & SILENT AUCTION 9 Our Honorees Sponsored by M&T Bank 10 BE AMAZING! 1ST ANNUAL FUNDRAISING GALA & SILENT AUCTION OUTSTANDING ARTIST OF THE YEAR Favorite Quote: Proverbs 27:17 As iron sharpens iron, so does one person sharpens another. Describe yourself in 140 characters or less: I was born to create. I believe my talent comes with responsibility, and with this in mind that I seek to redefine what art can be. What artist or genre of art sums up your personality best? Salvador Dali and Surrealism. Brian Kirhagis Title: Artist When did you realize your life’s purpose? As far back as I can remember, I had an inclination to formulate my thoughts into images. As I grew in technical ability and gained experience, I realized the power and reach of my abilities. That epiphany gave me purpose, and it has been my passion for over twenty years. What would you say are the key ingredients to greatness? First and foremost, an unwavering confidence is essential to any dream. While on one hand you must be your greatest fan, on the other you must be your harshest critic. The facility to self-diagnose your weaknesses will allow you to continuously improve and grow as a person and artist. No one will be as honest as you are with yourself. I would also say that dedication is imperative. You cannot control anything except how hard you work. Everything else is a wonderful melody of luck, circumstance, and opportunity. What will be your dent in the universe? I believe that art is a language. When spoken correctly, it has the unique ability to build bridges where words fall short. We live in an exciting yet crucial period of history, and I intend to document it through art, shedding light where there is darkness along the way. What advice would you give someone who is struggling to find their life’s path? Stop looking for a path. Instead, focus on the steps of today. Shift the perspective and expectations. Life is a series of dots, and how you connect them eventually becomes your path. The universe will provide the dots, it’s on us to recognize them and take advantage. Sometimes the confidence of knowing you’re going somewhere is much more valuable than actually knowing your destination. Believe in the first ten paces, and you will find yours before you know it. BE AMAZING! 1ST ANNUAL FUNDRAISING GALA & SILENT AUCTION 11 OUTSTANDING STUDENT OF THE YEAR Describe yourself in 140 characters or less: I’m a 21 year old artist living in Baltimore who just recently graduated with a BFA in photography from MICA. What artist or genre of art sums up your personality best? 1970’s feminist performance and video art When did you realize your life’s purpose? I still don’t think I know! In a general sense, I think I’ve always been an artist and I’ve always known I wanted to do big and important things, so hopefully I can continue to stay focused and keep aiming higher and higher with what I do! Lindsay Bottos-Sewell Title: Artist and Photographer What would you say are the key ingredients to greatness? Confidence, making goals, and not being lazy! What will be your dent in the universe? Hopefully, I can make some sort of difference by helping people, especially girls, to feel more confident. What advice would you give someone who is struggling to find their life’s path? Don’t rush it and don’t worry if it’s always changing! “Let me be something every minute of every hour of my life. Let me be gay; let me be sad. Let me be cold; let me be warm. Let me be hungry…have too much to eat. Let me be ragged or well dressed. Let me be sincere — be deceitful. Let me be truthful; let me be a liar. Let me be honorable and let me sin. Only let me be something every blessed minute. And when I sleep, let me dream all the time so that not one little piece of living is ever lost.” —Betty Smith 12 BE AMAZING! 1ST ANNUAL FUNDRAISING GALA & SILENT AUCTION OUTSTANDING EDUCATOR OF THE YEAR “The young are unconstrained by the habits of fear.” —Barack Obama Describe yourself in 140 characters or less: I am a communicator, connector, and world traveler; constantly in awe of the world and its people, especially our potential for greatness and love. Inspiring young people to seek out and live up to their best potential; connecting diverse individuals and sharing a little humor. What advice would you give someone who is struggling to find their life’s path? Best advice I’ve heard lately comes from my program leader, Elijah Cummings, when he encourages young people: “Don’t curse your journey. Trust your journey!” How true that sometimes our biggest challenges in life give way to our biggest blessings! “To laugh often and much . . . to appreciate beauty; to find the best in others; to leave the world a bit better; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. Hard work, learning through failure, reflection, relentlessness What will be your dent in the universe? Still left to be seen… hopefully something meaningful, aimed at making life better for kids. What advice would you give someone who is struggling to find their life’s path? Life almost never presents us with a direct path, it is through the twists and turns, moving forward and backtracking that we learn, grow, and become better. “All is well, answered Candide… but let us cultivate our garden.” —Excerpt from Candide by Voltaire 14 BE AMAZING! 1ST ANNUAL FUNDRAISING GALA & SILENT AUCTION OUTSTANDING COMMUNITY ORGANIZATION OF THE YEAR Describe yourself in 140 characters or less: We build families that transcend barriers by recognizing that everyone is of value: mentor and mentee both. What artist or genre of art sums up your personality best? Mixed media: IMP families are a collective of students and volunteers from diverse backgrounds. When did you realize your life’s purpose? Ten years ago, IMP had a bold idea. We saw that no matter how many resources agencies channeled into programs aimed at improving learning and test scores, the programs failed to reach all students using one approach. Incentive Mentoring Program (IMP) We thought, what if we designed a program that could adapt to the needs of each student? What if we could replicate the bonds shared by close-knit families? What if we could expand our definition of family and community to radically reconfigure students’ social support structure? So we built a network. What would you say are the key ingredients to greatness? Endless hope, Unwavering humility, Learning from everyone, Others before self, Adaptability What will be your dent in the universe? The people and resources of Baltimore will unite to break the cycle of poverty, drugs, and lack of education. No child will be without the guidance, encouragement, or means to accomplish his/her dreams. Generations of IMP alumni will create ripple effects throughout their communities, establishing a new cycle of learning, service, and social well-being. What advice would you give someone who is struggling to find their life’s path? Fail successfully - Try, fail, revise, and try again.
