of quality opportunities in sport and

Sports Registration Levy
Sports Fee
This is an annual levy paid by each and
every student involved in sport and physical
activity at Shirley Boys’ High School.
(Please note: this does not include the
curriculum subject, Physical Education,
or sports in the Bronze category). The levy
payable by each student is determined by
the category (Gold/Silver/Bronze) of the
highest ranking activity undertaken by each
student. The Shirley Boys’ High School
Board of Trustees has set the Sports and
Physical Activity levy at:
Each sport and physical activity at Shirley
Boys’ High School charges an Activity Fee
for their code. These fees are determined,
largely, by the costs associated with
running the particular activity. It should be
noted that, more often than not, the fees do
not reflect the total costs involved – they
are a contribution to meeting the expenses.
Sports and physical activities that are
more costly to run therefore have a higher
registration fee.
$30.00 FOR GOLD SPORTS:
Basketball, Cricket, Football, Hockey,
Rugby, Volleyball.
$15.00 FOR SILVER SPORTS:
Badminton, Canoe Polo, Fencing, Futsal,
Golf, Indoor Cricket, Softball, Squash, Table
Tennis, Target Shooting, Tennis, Touch
Rugby, Water Polo, Weights Club.
NO CHARGE FOR BRONZE SPORTS:
Athletics, Cross Country, Ice Hockey,
Karate-do, Road Racing, Snow Sports,
Sport Climbing, Surfing, Trap Shooting.
The proceeds from the collection of these
levies are administered by the Shirley Boys’
High School Sports Committee to ensure
that sport and physical activity continue
to thrive and grow at Shirley Boys’ High
School.
4
The proceeds from the collection of these
fees are administered by the committees
and/or persons that administer each code
to ensure that the particular sport and
physical activity continues to thrive and
grow at Shirley Boys’ High School.
Total Fees
The total fee payable by each student is a
combination of one Registration Levy and
one or more Sport Fees. It should be noted
that Shirley Boys High School operates a
‘No Pay – No Play’ policy (see below)
No Pay – No Play Policy
Shirley Boys’ High School operates
a ‘No Pay – No Play’ policy designed
to ensure that the benefactors (the
students) contribute appropriately to
the costs associated with their chosen
activity(s). Students are expected to have
either completed the payment of Sport
Registration Levy and Sport Fee(s), in
full, prior to playing or to have arranged a
suitable payment scheme approved by the
particular code and the Student Office.
Year Nine Sports
Programme
(incorporating Junior Spartans
Programme - JSP)
In recognition of Year 9 students finding
it difficult to establish themselves within
sport at Shirley Boys High School and
fuelled by a desire to have all students
active, the school has adopted a policy
of compulsory involvement in physical
activity for all Year 9 students. Students are
required to commit to a minimum of two
terms of physical activity. The emphasis
will be on ‘playing the game’ and the
social interactions made possible through
physical activity. Many of the activities are
prioritised for Year 9 students only (JSP).
Students must commit to their chosen
activities in the first two weeks of term
one and must select at least one activity
beginning in either term one or two.
Checks will be made to ensure that they
are honouring their commitment.
The Year Nine Sports Programme
offers opportunities in both ‘in-school
activities’ (Clubs or JSP’s) and competitive
involvement. If selecting a Club or JSP
option a student must attend his chosen
activity for a minimum of one hour on
a regular weekly basis throughout the
term(s) during which he is enrolled in the
activity. The JSP programme is displayed
on page 25 and a selection form is inserted
at the rear of this directory.
Sport Development
Programme
At Year 10, 11, 12 and 13 levels a specialised
Sports Development Programme has been
established for our top sports students. It
is a condition of entry to this programme
that the students play their major code(s) in
a school team (where a team is available).
The programme provides specialised ongoing training for the top sports students,
who in turn will form a core of able
students in each of the school’s first teams.
Applications are invited, in the middle of
each year, from Year 9 students who wish
to be considered for this programme in the
following year.
5
Sporting Exchanges
Shirley Boys’ High School is involved in a
number of sports exchanges each year,
sometimes as the host and at others, the
visiting school.
There is an expectation that all students
involved in such exchanges will billet
members of visiting teams, unless
exceptional circumstances prevent this
from happening.
All students who participate in exchanges
are expected to comply with the Shirley Boys’
High School Compliance Code (see below)
Sports Tournaments
Teams from Shirley Boys’ High School
compete in interschool, local, regional,
national and occasionally international
competitions. There are two New Zealand
Secondary Schools Tournament weeks
one for Summer Codes and one for Winter
Codes. The costs associated with attending
tournaments outside of Christchurch vary
with the locality of the venue and can be
reduced when parent committees and/or
students commit themselves to fundraising
for the particular event.
local Christchurch region will have to comply
with the requirements of Shirley Boys’ High
School Compliance Code (see below).
Sports Uniforms
All students who play sport in teams
representing Shirley Boys’ High School
must wear the correct uniform for their
chosen activity.
The majority of our competitive teams will
have uniforms supplied by the particular
code while some will require items to be
purchased by the students. Where this is
the case this should be specified in the
individual code descriptors.
SBHS Compliance
All students who compete in sporting
events held either in school time or outside
of Christchurch must comply with the
requirements of the school’s Compliance
Code. This code exists to ensure that
students honour commitments to their
academic studies. The process monitors
attendance and work completion and is
normally carried out four weeks prior to an
event happening and is based on student
weekly report grades.
All students who attend events that occur
either in school time or are outside of the

Students/Managers/Coaches Guide to Sport
All Shirley Boys’ High School students are encouraged to participate in sporting and/or
recreational activities. Equally they are encouraged to play for school teams when and
where opportunities exist.
Shirley Boys’ High School endorses the Fair Play Charter as part of the school sports policy.
THE AIM OF THE FAIR PLAY CHARTER OF NEW
ZEALAND IS:
• To make sport enjoyable and
rewarding.
AT SHIRLEY BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL IT IS
EXPECTED THAT A COACH WILL:
• Be a role model so as to inspire
confidence.
•
To compete to the best of our ability
with enthusiasm and fairness.
•
Be reasonable in their demands on
players.
•
To respect the rules which govern the
game and play by those rules on all
occasions.
•
Enhance and encourage the skill and
performance of their team.
•
•
To accept and respect the role of
the official always and to abide by
decisions they make.
Praise and encourage good
performance.
•
Be respectful of their team and the
oppositions ability as players.
To respect the mana of our opponents
and their supporters.
•
Be firm and fair.
•
Encourage adherence to this Charter.
•
•
To value the spirit of sportsmanship
and to accept victory and loss with
equal dignity.
THEREFORE A SHIRLEY BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL
PLAYER WILL:
• Play the game competitively, to win
within both the spirit and the letter of
the rules.
•
Accept and conform to all rulings by
game officials.
•
Refrain from any conduct that in the
opinion of the game officials render
a player unfit to continue to play the
game.
•
Be supportive of team members and
officials.
•
Wear your school uniforms and
colours correctly and with pride.
•
Behave in an acceptable manner in
accordance with this Charter.
AT SHIRLEY BOYS’ HIGH SCHOOL IT IS
EXPECTED THAT A MANAGER WILL:

confidence.

The Ten Commandments
1
2
3
4
6
Don’t compete with the coach. If the
coach becomes an authority figure,
it will run from enchantment to
disenchantment, etc ….with your son.
Don’t compare the skill, courage,
or attitudes of your son with other
members of his team, at least within
his hearing.
7
Try your best to be completely
honest about your son’s athletic
ability, his competitive attitude, his
sportsmanship, and his actual skill
level.
8
Be helpful but don’t coach him on the
way to his activity or on the way back
or at breakfast, and so on. It’s tough
not to, but it’s a lot tougher for your
son to be inundated with advice, pep
talks and often critical instruction.
9
Teach him to enjoy the thrill of
competition, to be “out there trying”,
to be working to improve his skills
and attitudes. Help him to develop the
feel for competing, for trying hard, for
having fun.
Try not to re-live your sporting life
through your son in a way that creates
pressure; you lost as well as won.
You were frightened, you backed
off at times, you were not always
heroic. Don’t pressure your son
because of your pride. Sons need their
parents so you must not withdraw.
Just remember there is a thinking,
feeling, sensitive free spirit out there
in that uniform who needs a lot of
understanding, especially when his
world turns bad. If he is comfortable
with you win or lose; he’s on his way to
maximum achievement and enjoyment.
5
8
Make sure your son knows that win
or lose, scared or heroic, you love
him, appreciate his efforts, and are
not disappointed in him. This will
allow him to do his best without fear
of failure. Be the person in his life
he can look to for constant positive
reinforcement.
Get to know the coach so that you
can be assured that his philosophy,
attitudes, ethics and knowledge are
such that you are happy to have your
son under his care.
Always remember that children tend
to exaggerate both when praised and
when criticized. Temper your reaction
and investigate before over-reacting.
10
Make a point of understanding
courage, and the fact that it is relative.
Some of us can climb mountains,
and are afraid to fight. Some of us
will fight but turn to jelly if a bee
approaches. Everyone is frightened
at times. Explain that courage is not
the absence of fear, but a means of
doing something in spite of fear or
discomfort.
THE JOB OF THE PARENT OF A
SPORTING CHILD IS A TOUGH ONE,
AND IT TAKES A LOT OF EFFORT TO
DO IT WELL. IT IS WORTH ALL THE
EFFORT WHEN YOU HEAR YOUR
CHILD SAY,
“MY PARENTS REALLY HELPED AND
I WAS LUCKY IN THIS RESPECT”.
Spectatorship
As spectators of your sons’ sport it is important you promote the fair play charter that is
included in this booklet. Whilst one of our pillars at SBHS is around excellence it is not at
the expense of respect for our own teams, the opposition, supporters of the opposition
and the officials. Please be positive citizens of our community and enhance the experience
for ALL those who are participating. You will notice the following signs placed on our fields
of play
PLEASE REMEMBER
•
THESE ARE YOUNG MEN
•
THIS IS A GAME
•
THE COACHES ARE VOLUNTEERS
•
THE REFEREES ARE HUMANN
LET’S ALL ENJOY THE EXPERIENCE

Three important points
IT COSTS NOTHING TO SAY “THANK YOU”.
Sport at Shirley Boys’ High school could not take place without the goodwill of teachers
and some members of the community. In 2013, teachers gave over 10,000 hours of
their own time to this aspect of school life. The Spartans Sports Committee thinks
it appropriate to remind students and caregivers alike that a simple “thank you” on
occasions goes a long way to making such people feel appreciated. Volunteers need
encouragement not discouragement.
COACHES/MANAGERS/HELPERS WANTED
Shirley Boys’ High School has a policy that all teams must have a coach or a manager.
Teams with inadequate supervision will not be allowed to enter into Local, Regional or
National Competitions.
If you feel you are able and willing to help with coaching, managing, officiating or indeed,
any other position. Please let us know.
GOLF TOURNAMENT
Shirley Spartans Sport runs a golf fundraising tournament at Christchurch Golf Club
during November. All proceeds from the event will go directly to sport at Shirley Boys’
High School Spartans Sport. We hope to have a predominantly ‘old boys’ field and make
this an annual event. This is a fundraising event and gives participants the opportunity
to play on one of the finest courses in the country while also contributing to the school’s
sporting programme. We will be seeking a field of 20 teams (80 players) with each team
paying $500 to participate.
If your business is unable to be involved, perhaps consider forming groups of four with
some ‘old boy’ mates – a fun way to give something back to your old school or your son’s
current one. If you are interested in being involved please contact Matt Sharr on 375 7057
