The Science Times ISSUE 3 NEWTON’S FAVOURITE NEWSPAPER EST. 2017 A Picture Paints a Thousand Words It Does Matter Which States of Matter it is! Students in middle primary looked at honey, candle wax, and chocolate and discussed ways in which they could change the various states of matter. Students the worked in groups and attempted to crush, heat and melt these various substances. The lesson concluded with Miss Harken putting the various substances in the freezer to further examine next week. Stay tuned! CHEMICAL CHANGE OR PHYSICAL CHANGE? This week at Newton Primary School students continued to examine different states of matter (solids, liquids and gases). Miss Harken discussed the ways in which it was possible to change different states. Students learnt the difference between a chemical change and physical change. The lower primary classes discovered that last week’s melting iceypole was a physical change, as it could be changed back. This week they looked at cooked spaghetti and discovered it was chemically changed, as it could not be changed back. In groups the students examined the different observable properties and created spaghetti collages. “Why yes, the world does revolve around me” – The Sun A nervous Miss Harken took advantage of the extremely hot weather last week and took the upper primary classes outside to play with the suns heat. Students were given a magnifying glass and a piece of chocolate and instructed to melt and burn it. The melting was identified as a physical change and the burning was identified as a chemical change.
