Tips for Degree Plans – Basic Science Track How to submit: Degree plans must be submitted via the Document Processing Submission Service (DPSS) DPSS can be accessed online through the Howdy Portal (https://howdy.tamu.edu) directly at https://ogsdpss.tamu.edu/ When to submit: Master’s Degree: Must be submitted by the end of the Fall Semester of 2nd year. PhD Degree: Must be submitted by the end of the Spring Semester of 2nd year. Petitions for changes must be approved no later than 90 days before the date of your thesis/dissertation defense (if defending earlier than the final defense deadline) or no later than 90 days prior to the final deadline Deadlines are set by OGAPS each semester. Find the appropriate deadlines at OGAPS web pages (http://ogaps.tamu.edu) BCD Graduate Studies web page (http://bcd.tamhsc.edu/graduate‐studies/currentstudents/index.html) What to submit: Requirements for MS Degree 32 semester credit hours (SCH) No advanced standing allowed for MS degree Transfer credit: Not allowed for courses with no formal grade or grades other than letter grades A or B Not allowed for thesis research courses or their equivalents Not more than 10 SCH may be transferred Credits used toward the award of a previous degree may not be transferred Credits used toward the award of the clinical certificate may not be used to meet requirements for the MS degree Not more than 8 SCH of combined research/thesis preparation may count toward the degree (5V96, 5V97, 5V98, 5V99, 691) Not more than 8 hours of combined 5V91, 5V92, 5V93, 5V94, 5V95 may count toward the degree Continuing Education courses may not be used for graduate credit Extension courses may not be used for graduate credit Requirements for PhD Degree 96 semester credit hours 64 semester credit hours for those who have completed a Master’s Degree, or a DDS/DMD or MD at a U.S. institution. Transfer credit: Not allowed for courses with no formal grade or grades other than letter grades A or B Not allowed for thesis research courses or their equivalents Not more than one third (1/3) of the required semester credit hours may be transferred Credits used toward the award of a previous degree may not be transferred Credits used toward the award of the clinical certificate may not be used to meet requirements for the PhD degree Must carry a reasonable amount of research hours (691 or 5V98/99) Continuing Education courses may not be used for graduate credit Extension courses may not be used for graduate credit
