Photosynthesis
The term “photosynthesis” refers to a chemical process that occurs in green
plants
Carbon dioxide and water are converted to sugar ( glucose) using energy from
the sun.
Chlorophyll is a chemical pigment found in the chloroplast of green plant cells,
which traps energy from light
I can state that the equation for photosynthesis is
Carbon dioxide + water
Sugar + oxygen
I can state that oxygen is a byproduct in photosynthesis
Oxygen and carbon dioxide enter and exit the leaves through tiny pores called
stomata
The entry and exit of these gases are controlled by specialised cells called
guard cells
I can state that water and nutrients enter the leaf in veins which contain xylem
I can state that changing the availability of the reactants will affect the rate
at which a plant can photosynthesise
The rate of photosynthesis is affected by light intensity
The rate of photosynthesis is affected by the colour of light
The rate of photosynthesis is affected by temperature
The rate of photosynthesis is affected by the concentration of carbon dioxide
I can state that factors which affect the rate of photosynthesis are called
limiting factors
I can draw graphs of limiting factors
I can interpret graphs of limiting factors

Factors affecting respiration
The term “respiration” refers to the chemical process by which energy is
released from glucose.
Every living cell in every living organism requires the conversion of glucose to
energy by respiration.
Aerobic respiration is in the presence of oxygen
Fermentation occurs when oxygen is absent
Aerobic respiration means “with oxygen” and releases a greater quantity of
energy than fermentation.
Glucose and oxygen are required for aerobic respiration to take place.
Water and carbon dioxide are waste products of respiration.
I can describe an experiment which demonstrates how energy can be released
from food and oxygen (burning food experiment).
I can describe an experiment which shows how respiration occurs in the cells
of all living things (germinating peas v boiled peas experiment).
Energy, water and carbon dioxide are the products of aerobic respiration.
I can write a word equation for respiration, identifying the raw materials & products.
Anaerobic respiration means “without oxygen” and releases less energy than
aerobic respiration.
Glucose is required for fermentation to take place.
13.
Lactic acid is a product of fermentation when it occurs in animals and bacteria.
14.
Alcohol is a waste product of fermentation in plants and fungi.
15.
Carbon dioxide is released during fermentation in plants.
16.
I can write a word equation for aerobic respiration and fermentation identifying
the raw materials & products.
I can give examples of how aerobic respiration & fermentation are used in industry.
