Weddings - Christ`s Hospital

Weddings
Located in the heart of the
Sussex countryside, Christ’s
Hospital is the perfect
backdrop for your wedding.
Sitting on 1200 acres of
rolling countryside, Christ’s
Hospital offers a completely
unique location for your
special day. Steeped in history
and grandeur, to have your
wedding with us will make for
an unforgettable experience
for both you and your guests.
A Brief History
When you first walk under the elaborate arches in to
Christ’s Hospital, the culture and heritage of the school
can be felt instantly. King Edward VI first founded Christ’s
Hospital in London in 1552, which was then moved to
Horsham in 1902. The school brought with it some of the
same bricks and statues that make up the buildings you see
today and the main buildings hold a notable collection of
over 100 oil paintings from the 16th to 21st Century.
The first wedding to be held at Christ’s Hospital was on the
20th September 1695 between two students at the London
site. That’s almost 320 years of wedding experience, so you
know you will be in good hands.
The Rooms
The elegant and historic surroundings will add something quite unique
to your whole wedding experience. Every one of the rooms that Christ’s
Hospital offers, provides the perfect setting and each room individually
delivers a sense of opulence and style that your wedding guests deserve.
Court Room
The Court Room, our smallest room and the
only room licensed for civil ceremonies with a
maximum of 100 people.
It is suitable for a small wedding reception and
can seat a maximum of 70 people on seated
round tables or a maximum of 100 standing.
It has elegant wooden panelling throughout
and a magnificent large stone fireplace, a real
centrepiece to the room.
These are not the only features this room has to
offer, the bride will make her entrance from the
iconic red brick cloisters into the Court Room.
Big School
An architectural masterpiece, inside and
out, Big School is our medium sized room
and is perfect for receptions. This grand hall
can seat up to 150 guests on round tables
or 600 standing.
Situated at one end of Big School you
will find a stage, which can be used for a
wedding band. A band is perfectly suited to
this room as the hall has excellent acoustics.
With its high ceilings, wooden panelled
walls and your own decoration, you will
make quite the statement with this room
on your wedding day.
Along with Chapel and
the Dining Hall, Big School
has one of the highest
suspended ceilings in Europe.
It also houses some historic
plaques, recording all the
Presidents, Treasurers,
Clerks and Headmasters of
Christ’s Hospital.
Christ’s Hospital School is
a striking building using a
combination of brick and Bath
stone. It was designed by
architects, Sir Aston Webb
and Ingress Bell and was
built by a local firm, James
Longley and Sons of Crawley.
Edward VII laid the Horsham
foundation stone in 1897. The
design cleverly incorporates
the original style of the London
building; the main statue in the
centre of the quad is of King
Edward VI and was brought
from the Maths School in
London. The other statues
were designed by William
Silver Frith and date from
1902, including some of our
famous Old Blues - Coleridge,
Maine, Middleton and Lamb.
Dining Hall
The Dining Hall is by far the grandest of all the rooms we offer at
Christ’s Hospital. As the largest reception room, it can seat up to
400 guests on round tables or 800 standing.
The Dining Hall holds the largest collection of historic artwork on
its walls, including an 86 foot long painting by Antonio Verrio and
this is not the only feature the Dining Hall has to offer. There are
beautiful stained glass windows and Gothic chandeliers that also
add to the ambiance of the venue and will leave your guests in awe.
Like Big School, the Dining Hall too has a stage which can be used
for a wedding band. You will also find a pulpit and microphone
situated in the Dining Hall for those all-important speeches.
