John E. Tomazin, 92, of
Browndale, died Sunday, July
10, 2016 at the Riverview Manor, Owego, NY.
Born in Forest City, son of
the late John and Agnes Koncan Tomazin, he was a graduate of Forest City High School
and was a member of Ascension Parish, Forest City. He
was a US Army veteran of
World War II, having served
as a medic in India and Burma
with the 100th Station Hospital and the 73rd EVAC Hospital. He was a member of the
American Legion Post 524,
Forest City. Prior to retirement, he was employed as the
utility plant supervisor at the
former Farview State Hospital,
Waymart.
Surviving are a sister: Dorothy Ludlam, Longmont, CO; a
brother: Joseph Tomazin, Berkshire, NY; and many nieces
and nephews.
He was also preceded in
death by a sister: Agnes Lahoda; and four brothers: Edward,
Albert, Leonard, and Herman
Tomazin.
The funeral was Thursday,
July 14 from the Jones & Brennan Funeral Home, 430 Main
Street, Forest City, with Mass
of Christian Burial in Saint
Joseph’s Church, Delaware
Street, Forest City. Interment
with military honors, St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Forest City.

Celia Barechio, 103, of
Susquehanna, passed way
Thursday, June 16, 2016 at the
Skilled Nursing Facility of
Barnes Kasson Hospital. Celiawas born in Forest City on October 21, 1912 the daughter of
the late William and Mikalina
Mileskay.
She was married to Albert
Barechio, who preceded her in
death in 1963. Also preceding
her in death was a daughter,
Josephine Marshall and sonin-law, Joseph Marshall; four
sisters, Jean Shalna, Veronica
Kucinski, Aldona Bagniewski,
Marion Sellitto; and a brother,
Joseph Mileskay.
Celia is survived by two
daughters, Mary Rose and
son-in-law, Richard Rossi
of Santa Rosa, CA; Cecelia
Furkay of Neptune Beach, FL;
seven grandchildren, Michael
Rossi of Missoula, MT; Karen
Brockman, Petaluma, CA;
Kristen Smith, Harrisburg;
Jennifer and Robert McManus,
Jacksonville Beach, FL; Carrie and David Hinkley, Hallstead; Stephanie D’Argenio,
Yardley, Pa.; Shelley and
Thomas Doyle, Yardley, Pa.;
seven
great-grandchildren,

Alice Smyk Maslar, 83, of
Whitney Point, formerly of
Johnson City, died Monday,
July 11, 2016.
She was predeceased by her
husband of 51 years, Bob Maslar; her brothers, Walter Smyk
and Theodore Smyk; and a sister, Eugenia Murphy.
She is survived by her children, David and Brenda Maslar, Richard and Linda Maslar, Cynthia and James Ford,
Cathy Breon; nine grandchildren, David and Cheryl, Jonathan, Brandon and Christina,
Mallory, Robert, Amy, Alicia, Earl and Andrew; a great
grandson, Jonathan; several
nieces and nephews.
She was a member of Holy
Spirit Byzantine Catholic
Church, Binghamton and its
Mothers club. Alice was a retired legal secretary having
worked for Peter Daniels and
Connerton & Berti. She enjoyed quilting and cross stitching.
A Divine Liturgy was held
at Holy Spirit Byzantine Catholic Church, Binghamton, on
July 15 with Rev. Teodor B. Czabala, Jr. officiating. Burial will
be in Holy Spirit Cemetery,
Kattelville.

The 16th annual music in
the park will be held Sunday,
Aug. 7, at the Clifford Firemen’s grounds, Rte. 106, Clifford.
Worship service will be
held at 10:30 a.m. followed
by the event at 11:30 a.m. to 5
p.m., rain or shine.

Brown
Atlantic City, N.J.
William J. “Bill” Brown, 62,
of Atlantic City and formerly
of Carbondale died Friday,
July 8, 2016, at home.
Born in Carbondale he was
the son of the late Atty. Bernard and Nan McNeill Brown.
He attended St. Rose of
Lima Church, Carbondale. He
was a 1971 graduate of Scranton Prep School, and was also
a graduate of the Providence
College, Providence, RI. Bill
was a US Army veteran.
Prior to his retirement he
was employed as a psychiatric
security aide at the former Farview State Hospital, Waymart.
Surviving are two sisters,
Catherine Bohmueller, and her
husband, Otto, Grand Haven,
FL, and Anne Bowness and
her husband, Robert, Sparta,
NJ ; two brothers, Neill Brown
and wife, Cindy, Crescent
Beach, FL, and Dr. Charles
Brown and his wife, Nancy,
Clifford Twp.; several nieces
and nephews.
The funeral was held July
18 with Mass of Christian burial in St. Rose of Lima Church,
Carbondale. Interment, Our
Mother of Sorrows Cemetery,
Finch Hill.

Owens
Lenoxville
Thomas J. Owens Sr., 85,
Lenoxville, died Friday, July 8,
2016, at Hospice of the Sacred
Heart, Dunmore. His wife is Alice Morris Owens.
Born in Carbondale, son of
the late Thomas and Catherine
Kolopensky Owens, he was a
systems administrator at International (Akzo) Salt before retirement.
Spending time with family
was his greatest joy. He also enjoyed traveling, with his wife,
to all the events of his nine
children, 18 grandchildren and
seven great-grandchildren, especially following their athletic careers. Tom was a Little
League coach and a member
of the Monday Night Bowling
League for decades. He loved to
travel and enjoyed the casinos
and horse races.
In addition to his wife, surviving are four sons, Thomas J.
Owens Jr. and Tammy, Florida;
Jeffrey J. Owens, Whites Crossing; William E. Owens and Machelle, Clifford; and James M.
Owens and Deanna, Waymart;
five daughters, Catherine M.
Gliniecki and Edward, Dickson City; Dorothy A. Wallace
and David, Lenoxville; Diane
M. Speed and Louis, Virginia;
Janice M. Bevacqua and Mark,
Lenoxville; and Dawn M. Steele
and William, Lenoxville; Poppy
to his 18 grandchildren, Edward and Lawrence Gliniecki,
Samantha Bilyo, Danielle Weida, Thomas Owens III, Andrea
Sanders, Melinda Bennett,
Louis and Nicole Speed, Mark
and Jeffrey Bevacqua, William, Bradley, Bryan, Grace and
Christopher Owens, Mackenzie
and William Steele; seven greatgrandchildren and an eighth
due in October; and a sister-inlaw, Betty Jones, Dalton.
The funeral service was held
July 19 in the Carbondale First
United Methodist Church.

Eugene R. Smugeresky, 80,
of Vandling died Saturday,
July 9, 2016, at the Forest City
Nursing Center. His wife, Janet Werts Cavna, died in 2012.
Born in Simpson, he was the
son of the late Stanley & Mary
Costolnick Smugeresky, Sr. He
was a graduate of Overbrook
School for the Blind, Philadelphia. Eugene was a self-employed snack bar operator in
Harrisburg.
He was a member of St.
Rose Parish, Carbondale and
the Knights of Columbus. He
enjoyed listening to “Cold
Case” on television and the
Philly’s games (or any games)
on his trusty radio. He was
always happy to talk baseball
with anyone who could keep
up with him on team statistics.
The family would like to
offer their sincere gratitude
to the staff of the Forest City
Nursing Center and Hospice
of the Sacred Heart for the
care of Eugene.
He is survived by four
nieces and nephews, Mary
Lee Martines and husband
Michael, with whom he resided, Vandling, Joan Hoyt
and husband Jeffrey, Dover,
NJ, Stanley Smugeresky, III,
Germantown, MD, Steven
Smugeresky and wife Kate,
Silver Spring, MD, eight great
nieces and nephews, Jillian,

Skorupa, Vandling. He is also
survived by his wife’s children, Debbie Murray and husband Fran, Sharon Cavna and
Scott Cavna and wife Beth and
their children.
He was preceded in death
by his brothers, Stanley
Smugeresky Jr. and infant Joseph.
The funeral will be Wednesday from the Joseph W. Scotchlas Funeral Home, Inc., 621
Main St., Simpson with Mass
of Christian Burial at 9:30 Am
in St. Michael Church, 46 Midland St., Simpson. Interment
will be in Holy Trinity Cemetery, Simpson. Friends may
call Tuesday from 5 to 8 Pm.
