Compared to last year at this time we are doing well having cut the number of behavior referrals down. Last year in May the most common behavior was fighting/spitting/physical aggression and the most common area was the classroom. The classroom is once again the area that we are seeing the most behaviors. In the month of April we had 28 events taking place in the classroom. This is up from last month where we only had 17 events. The majority of the behaviors we are seeing in the classroom are taking place by boys. (22 out of 28) Of these 28 events 3 are for fighting/spitting/physical aggression. 3 for property misuse. 5 for not responsible. 2 for property damage. 5 for defiance/disrespect. 4 for three minors. 1 for harassment discrimination. 1 for Forgery. 2 for computer violation. 1 for academic integrity. 1 for unsafe behavior. There are 4 students who show up for more than one behavior in the classroom. Grade 1 Carter: 1 fighting/spitting/physical aggression, 1 property misuse, 1 not responsible Grade 1 Joey: 2 Not responsible Grade 2 Jacob: 2 fighting/spitting/physical aggression, 1 defiance/disrespect, 1 three minors Grade 4 Annabelle: 1 Three minors, 1 forgery The most common behavior we are still seeing this month is three minors. There are 7 incidents that were three minor majors. Defiance/disrespect majors have also increased this month and are our second most common behavior we are seeing. Of these 7 behaviors 4 are happening in the classroom and 3 of them are unspecified locations. There were not any students that showed up more than once this month as exhibiting three minor behaviors that needed to be turned into a major. This month there are 6 students who have showed up for more than 1 behavior during the month. Grade 1 Joey: 2 not responsible Grade 1 Carter: 1 fighting/spitting/physical aggression, 1 property misuse, 1 not responsible Grade 2 Jacob: 2 fighting/spitting/physical aggression, 1 defiance/disrespect, 1 three minors Grade 4 Annabelle: 1 three minors, 1 forgery Grade 4 Eric: 1 bus misconduct, 1 computer violation Grade 5 Christian: 1 bus misconduct, 1 defiance/disrespect Looking at our time of day data we see that there is a spike in behaviors at the 2 O’Clock hour this month. However, looking at the data it looks like Breaking each hr down: 7:00: 1 three minors, 1 bus misconduct, 1 fighting/spitting/physical aggression 8:00: 9:00: 1 forgery, 1 bus misconduct 10:00: 2 not responsible 11:00: 2 computer violation, 1 defiance/disrespect, 1 property damage 12:00: 2 property damage, 1 fighting/spitting/physical aggression 1:00: 1 harassment discrimination, 1 property misuse, 1 defiance/disrespect, 1 unsafe behavior 2:00: 3 fighting/spitting/physical aggression, 2 not responsible, 3 defiance/disrespect, 1 academic integrity 3:00: 4 three minors, 1 property misuse 4:00: 1 three minors, 1 not responsible 5:00: 1 three minors This is a new graph that was just added to the Infinite Campus Portal that allows us to look at how effective PBIS is in our school and if we are reaching the goals the PBIS data says that we should be meeting. According the the PBIS Data the general rule of thumb is that you want to have 80% of your students falling into the green category which means that our Tier 1 system is working for them, 20% falling into the middle yellow zone which would represent Tier 2, and then an even smaller number falling into the red top zone which would be our Tier 3 level,(We currently do not have Tier 3 Interventions/system in place at this time.) Looking at our PBIS Tier Triangle breakdown we are doing an excellent job at the Tier 1 and Tier 2 level by having 89.2% of our students being successful at the Tier 1 level and 7.6% at the Tier 2 level. This data is based on the number of ODR’s students are receiving on a regular basis. PBIS Celebration Activities Descriptions Gym Activities: Ms. Delveaux will lead Just Dance in the gym. It is an exciting time at Hillcrest Elementary School. Our students are extremely busy logging minutes for our Literacy Month. We have communicated this wonderful time to you through our Hillcrest website, newsletters and teacher letters. We also held a Family Engagement Night on May 14th. This wonderful event allowed parents to better understand our Literacy Month and how PBIS is working within our Hillcrest walls. As May is coming to a close, we want to celebrate all of our wonderful readers throughout the building. Students have read a lot of books, and have learned about many different lands and characters. We have even incorporated a few DEAR (Drop Everything and Read) moments throughout our school days. On Friday, May 31st, our school community is encouraging students to celebrate that knowledge with a “Dress Like Your Favorite Character Day!” Students and staff are encouraged to come to school dressed like their favorite character from a book they have read. Teachers will have special reading times in their classrooms, or hear from some guest readers in the DZ. Our entire staff is very excited to share their favorite children’s book! In addition to dressing like their favorite characters, three classrooms who have logged the most minutes on the Scholastic website by May 23rd will earn a popcorn party for their class. http://www.scholastic.com/ups/campaigns/src-2013 The 2012-2013 school year is almost complete, and there is much to celebrate! Please take a few moments with your child to discuss what interesting book is being read. Talk about the power of reading and exercising the brain. To date, our students have accumulated over 185,000 minutes of reading. That is a powerful statement. 185,000 minutes!!! Keep up the great work and don’t forget to log those minutes over the summer! They all count towards being a top reading school in the country! Please continue to promote reading this summer. Take your child to the public library, or have them visit the Parents4Learning Mobile Library (June 18th, July 9th, August 6th from 4:30-7PM at the Hillcrest Playground). Have a great rest of your day, and I hope to see you soon (with a good book!), Yours in Education, Robert J.
