From the President . . .
It has been my honor to be your NHRMA president for 2012. Once
again, we have had an outstanding year and I want to send a special
thank you to the NHRMA board and conference committee members for all their
hard work and dedication this year. Also
give a round of applause for our supporters this year and attendees at this
year’s NHRMA events.
This year the board did much work
behind the scenes related to building
infrastructure for future boards as well
as provided outstanding professional
development and recognition for our
profession. Here are some highlights
from this year and a sneak peek into Ren’ee Mangini, SPHR, GPHR
2013.
• The NHRMA Annual Conference and Tradeshow in Alaska was
incredible. It had everything from a winning sled dog team, to a
calorie burning, laugh out loud comedienne. The professional
development opportunities got great reviews from our attendees.
NHRMA sponsored a successful Leadership Workshop where participants explored and shared best practice including strategies to
recruit, engage, and retain chapter and state council volunteer
leaders. Moreover, you have to admit the venue was incredible.
During breaks, I saw people go outside the conference center to
simply enjoy the breathtaking view of snow-capped, sunlit mountains. We hope you join us for our great line-up for our 75th Annual
Conference & Tradeshow, October 9–11, 2013 in Tacoma, WA.
• The 37th HR Foundations seminars in OR & WA were awarded 19.5
recertification credits and had over 250 attendees this year. Next
year look for the new name HR Academy that more accurately
reflects the advanced level. Sign-up early as we expect to sell out
this next year. In 2013, we will also be doing one in AK.
• The NHRMA Student Conference and Case Competition was a huge
success with over 55 students in attendance at Portland State
University. This year we had six teams participating in the case
competition and a tie for first place. The two first place winners
attended the SHRM Annual Conference in Atlanta GA. Overall, we

supported student and young professionals’ programs with donations of over $14,700. Join us
next year in April at Lake Washington Institute of
Technology in Redmond, WA. If you would like
to volunteer for the event, please contact me as
the Advisor at LWIT at [email protected] or
Jennifer Schwope at jennifer.schwope@
avanade.com.
NHRMA feels it is important to provide the SHRM
Foundation with financial support to ensure that
they can continue their important work in advancing the HR profession. NHRMA is a longtime supporter and a top contributor with contributions of $2,000-$4,000 annually. In addition,
we send an annual donation to be used in the
auction at the SHRM Leadership Conference.
NHRMA provides financial support to the SHRM
Foundation in two major ways. First, we hold a
silent auction each year at our NHRMA Annual
Conference and Tradeshow with all the proceeds going to the SHRM Foundation. This year’s
auction raised over $2,358. Second, we offer
matching funds of $100 each donation to encourage all SHRM chapters and State Councils in
Alaska, Oregon, and Washington to support the
SHRM Foundation. To take advantage of this, go
to http://www.nhrma.org/LinkClick.aspx?file
ticket=k1fAmqzuIXM%3d&tabid=36 or visit our
website at www.nhrma.org and look for the
“matching funds” link toward the bottom of the
home page.
In 2012, NHRMA gave $51,000 to support SHRM
Members, Chapters, and State Councils in our
area with our profit sharing program.
NHRMA achieved one of our top goals by recognizing the outstanding achievement of HR Professionals. $10,000 in awards was bestowed
upon deserving HR colleagues and we awarded
our first Sharon Koss Graduate Student Award.
You can read more about this year’s award recipients in this newsletter.
From a communications standpoint we have
updated and revamped our website to provide
more information and easier access. We have
published four quarterly newsletters for AK, OR,
and WA and will continue to do this for years to
come. We created Facebook (www.facebook.
com/pages/Nhrma/301830629870692) and Twitter (@ NHRMA72) accounts and are looking to
expand communication on these new mediums.
Please join us!
• NHRMA has added a new board position, Partnership Director, which will better collaborate
with our conference sponsors to give them the
maximum exposure possible and to support the
SHRM members in our three states. We are
currently recruiting to fill this volunteer opportunity so if you are interested in volunteering
please contact me directly. If you would like to
sponsor the HR profession please contact anyone on the board.
• One very critical thing we worked on this year
was ensuring we had policies, and a decision
history for operations to better streamline our
volunteer board members’ time and add consistency for future boards. We are continuing this
project by reviewing history and archiving it for
easy accessibility for future reference. We renewed our contract with Conference Solutions
and updated the conference guidelines for host
chapters so they have the tools needed for success. We have also revamped the NHRMA host
chapter bidding process.
• We have started to create more awareness of
what NHRMA has to offer SHRM members in our
area by visiting and speaking about “The NHRMA
Advantage” at all the state conferences and other
chapter meetings. We hope that the word
spreads and more individuals take advantage of
all that we offer.
I am so very excited to introduce our 2013 board
who will take the lead next year. Please consider
joining their committees to advance our profession.

75th Annual NHRMA
Conference & Tradeshow
October 9–11, 2013
Tacoma Convention & Trade Center | Tacoma, WA
“By three methods we may learn
wisdom: First, by
reflection, which
is noblest; second, by imitation, which is easiest; and third by
experience, which is the bitterest.” —Confucius
As we come together to celebrate our 75th annual NHRMA conference, we find this to be an
exciting time in the Human Resources field. Our
profession has grown from the days of simply
processing the next stack of paperwork into a
career that has made us true business partners
with our organizations. By creating value in these
partnerships we gained seats at the table allowing
us to transform our workforces into productive
and engaging places to work.
This Conference will highlight and celebrate our success of the past 75
years while looking to the future ahead. In keeping with our successful
tradition of bringing our profession together now for 75 consecutive years,
we plan to introduce new emerging topics in our field, focus on having
meaningful conversations, and foster valuable networking of colleagues
around key ideas with topical social media and online collaboration leading up to the Conference and following on afterwards.
The Conference will be hosted on October 9-11 in Tacoma, WA. This city,
known for its diverse community and growing industries, is the ideal
location for us to learn and play. Attractions ranging from the renowned
LeMay Museum of cars, stunning sights and alluring art exhibits will help
set the mood for expanding our horizons in looking forward. The conference registration and hotel reservation sites will open in 2013. We encourage you to register for the Conference early, and take advantage of special
reduced rates at The Hotel Murano before the group block is full.
Visit www.nhrmaconference.org to view the latest developments, participate in our Call for Presentations and join our conference email list. We also encourage you to Like Us on Facebook for the latest
updates.
Sincerely,
Your NHRMA 2013 Conference Committee

to work with, and the most
effective leader within the student chapter in many
years.”
Lorissa joined the Portland State University Human Resource Management Association (PSU
HRMA) in 2011. She immediately became an active

Randy Lundberg Northern
Lights Award
This year’s recipient, the Anchorage Society for
Human Resource Management was recognized
for their four year involvement in a unique multiagency partnership with the Anchorage School
District, Department of Labor, the Martin Luther
King Career Center and other local trade partners
including Alaska Home Builders Association, Alaska
Works Partnership and Associated Builders Contractors. The partnership’s ultimate goal is to keep
students in school and see that they receive the
appropriate training and education to succeed in
finding not only a job, but a career to live a successful life.
In April, 2012, the Department of Labor recognized ASHRM’s participation in this partnership
and presented the chapter with the Director’s Certificate of Appreciation Award. This award was
presented by the Department of Labor’s Employment Security Division Director, Paul E. Dick in
recognition for ASHRM’s outstanding and unwavering commitment to the Youth Job Center and
preparing youth for future success. This is the first
time this award has been presented to someone
outside of the Department of Labor. This is quite
an honor for ASHRM.

dent. Currently, he leads the HR department at
New Seasons Market.
A frequent speaker at human resource conferences, Mr. Howell has also been an adjunct faculty
for Washington State University, Portland State
University, and/or City University for the past
twenty-three years. Rick started the WSU
Vancouver Student HR Chapter. He holds BA and
MBA degrees from Washington State University
and holds certifications of Senior Professional in
Human Resources (SPHR) and Certified Compensation Professional (CCP). He was among the first
in the nation to earn the Global Professional in
Human Resources (GPHR) certification in 2004.
He has served in various positions with the
1000+ member PHRMA (Portland Human Resource
Management Association) organization, including

Oregon State Council in 2007. In 2006, he received
NHRMA’s (Northwest Human Resources Management Association) Distinguished Member award.
Rick served as SHRM’s Pacific West Region Member Advisory Council (MAC) representative for
2008 and 2009, and was NHRMA’s President in
2011.
Deborah Jeffries, PHR, CPC
Deborah showed up at a
local chapter meeting one afternoon in Salem, Oregon,
hoping to have a good lunch
and do some networking.
That was 22 years ago, and
she could never have imagined what the future would
hold. After only one month,
she was filling out the SHRM
membership application to become a member of
her local chapter, NHRMA, and SHRM…and now
she is almost a lifer!
Early on, Deborah was asked to join the SHRMA
local Board as Secretary, and she began creating
the Chapter’s first monthly newsletter. Over the
years, she has served at many levels and volunteered in a variety of positions, including President of the Salem Chapter not once, but twice—in
1994 and again in 2007—both times helping the
Chapter earn the Superior Merit Award. She moved
up from Chapter activities to being a Member of
what was then called the Area V Board, and SHRM’s
Oregon State Council, where she served in five
different positions.
People often comment that “Deborah knows everyone,” and she’s used those “connections” in her
current positions as the Program Director for her
local Salem Chapter and as the HRCI Director on
the Oregon State Council. Deborah can also be
found working with and presenting to many individual Chapters at their monthly Chapter meetings; at HRCI Certification Prep classes; and at
State and Regional Conferences (yes, even here at
NHRMA) in what is now the Pac-West Region.

Thank you to all who donated to the SHRM Foundation Auction at the NHRMA Conference in
Anchorage! We made $2358 for the Foundation. For those of you who couldn’t make it to the
conference or the auction, we had scarves, jewelry, gift cards, native Alaska items, wine, a variety
of baskets and many other wonderful items. In all, we had 50 donated items up for auction this
year! For those of you who bid…thank you!
Lisa Dean will serve as NHRMA’s Foundation Director in 2013. She has done it before and she
is GOOD! Tacoma will be a large conference and the auction should be awesome…start thinking
now about what you will be donating! AND…start saving!

SHRM State Council News
Alaska State Council
What do Northern Lights, sled dogs and a museum have in common? If you attended the 74th
Annual NHRMA Conference and Tradeshow in Anchorage, Alaska you know the answer. If you didn’t,
then you missed a great conference!
As someone who loves educational opportunities, I can tell you that when I attend conferences,
I like to also experience the culture and the highlights of the town I may be visiting. It was great to
see several of our out of state attendees keep tabs
with aurora borealis activity and their perseverance paid off. They were able to experience the
Northern Lights in all their glory! We were glad to
see Mother Nature cooperate to give them an experience of a lifetime.
Our keynote speaker on day 1 was four-time
Iditarod Champion Martin Buser. He set the bar for
grand entrances when all of a sudden the ballroom
doors opened and a sled-riding Martin emerged,
pulled by 4 sled dogs and making a loop around the
room to wind up on stage! Grand entrances aside,
his topic was very pertinent to our HR roles—
managing and training a dog team has many similarities to the workplace. Perhaps keep in mind
that “if you are not the lead dog, the scenery never
changes.”
We had great pre-conference workshops, five
tracks of concurrent sessions, subject matter experts keeping us updated on what is going on in all
areas of HR and we included an informal opportunity for attendees to get more targeted information
from “Table Topics” held during lunch on the
second day.
Conferences take over a year of planning; there
are tons of logistics issues to deal with, expenses
and other challenges. An integral part of the success of a conference are our sponsors and exhibitors, as their participation not only keeps us up to
date with current trends in services and products,
but their participation helps offset a large majority
of the conference costs, keeping attendee costs
affordable. The Conference Committee worked tirelessly over an entire year to ensure all aspects of
the conference were taken care of. Conference
Solutions manages the logistics and helps keep us
on track and they do a wonderful job of it. And last,
but certainly not least we have our wonderful,
knowledgeable speakers, who took time out of
their busy schedule to travel to Alaska to provide
a presentation to our attendees. And yes, we can
have all of the above but nothing would work
without your continued support. Thanks to all of
you who attended, volunteered, sponsored, exhibited, presented and supported the 74th Annual
Conference and Tradeshow.
On behalf of the Alaska SHRM State Council, I
thank NHRMA for the opportunity and honor to
host the conference in our wonderful state this
year!

Happy Holidays!
As we round the corner into the end of the year
I reflect on all the hard work our WA State Council
Board has accomplished this year:
• Statewide Veteran initiatives. WSC and Chapters partnered with the Washington State Department of Veterans Affairs, Veterans Conservation Corps/Vet Corps, to hold many planned
activities with local Vet Corp Representatives to
create workforce readiness resources and employment opportunities for our returning Heroes.
• Young and Emerging Leaders at large events. In
the spring we held a happy hour networking and
then in the summer a game at the Mariners.
• Free monthly Global seminars for those seeking
GPHR credits or insight into global HR.
• HR Day on the Hill! Another successful meetyour-legislators event in Olympia. To assist our
members in getting involved and engaged state
employment laws and regulations.
• A successful statewide conference with national
speakers and employment law specialists presenting to a sold out crowd!
Our incoming board and new State Director,
Anne Rafetto, will not disappoint our members!
Planning has already begun to ensure a seamless
transition and continued offerings to our members. Save the date for the following scheduled
events.
• February 1st : HR Day on the Hill: Stay informed
and get engaged with your state legislators as
we move into another tight budget year with a
new Governor!

The HR Academy
• March 12th: New and expanded statewide conference! More sessions, more legal speakers,
special keynote speaker Jeff Lanza on Leadership integrity, and more space! We are expanding our efforts based on past sell-out years.
Mostly I end the year with admiration for the
efforts made by our SHRM volunteer leaders. I am
honored to have been given this opportunity to
serve with them and be a part of this process. I give
thanks to their dedication, commitment and tenacity. It has been a pleasure working with them.

(formerly HR Foundations)
Oregon State Council
The Oregon State Council is already looking
forward to our transition to new leadership for
2013. Kathy Sharp, Director Elect, has put together a great slate of board members for the
coming year. To get the transition started right,
the Oregon State Council is hosting its 1st Annual
Leadership Conference in November. Each of the
Chapters has been invited to bring members from
their own board of directors for professional development and networking purposes. The morning will feature guest speakers on chapter financial
management, fiduciary duties of board members
of nonprofit organizations, and a step-by-step approach to building a social media presence. The
OSC’s regular Board meeting will follow in the
afternoon.
The Oregon State Council is also happy to report
that every Oregon SHRM-affiliated Chapter is sending representatives to the SHRM Leadership Conference in Washington DC. In total, a group of 22
will be traveling to D.C. to take in the latest updates
from SHRM. While there, the group has planned a
number of team building events, including a guided
tour of the U.S. Capitol and a moonlight monuments tour. We can’t emphasize enough how important it is to network with fellow SHRM members, and we expect the relationships built during
this trip will have lasting value to the Oregon State
Council, the Oregon SHRM-affiliated chapters, and
the SHRM members we serve.
Finally, don’t forget the Oregon State Council’s
upcoming Employment Law Conference on February 28, 2013. The conference, called “H.R. Recipes
for Success,” is still in the planning stages. With
the assistance of the Stoel Rives law firm, the
conference should build on many years of success.
Randall Sutton | Director
The HR Foundations seminar (to be called HR
Academy beginning in 2013) is designed to provide
practical knowledge of all the functional areas of
HR: Recruitment, Performance Management, Employee Benefits, Compensation Administration,
Employment Law, and the Legislative Environment.
These topics will be presented by highly qualified
professionals with records of proven success in
their fields.
Planning is currently underway for the HR Academy to be held in Oregon next Spring, and in
Washington next Fall; Alaska to be scheduled.
