A Field Trip to parts of the Brazos River System

A field trip to Three Man-Made
Lakes in the Brazos River
System
Introduction
On this field trip we will visit the Brazos
River System at several localities especially
several man-made lakes – Lake Ft.
Phantom, Lake Hubbard Creek and
Possum Kingdom Lake. The first two lakes
mentioned serve as sources of water
for the city of Abilene. The latter lake is
an important recreational area.
Route Taken
• Our first stop is in Abilene at Elm Creek. Our
next stop is at Lake Ft. Phantom, north of
Abilene. From there we go to highway 180 and
head east. A detour is made up to Ft. Griffin
State Park but after that we continue along 180
to the area of Caddo, Texas.
Elm Creek in Abilene
This creek, a tributary of the Brazos River,
is dammed up to help form
Lake Ft. Phantom. .Note it is dry now.
That is why Lake Ft. Phantom was created – to help provide
Abilene with a reliable source of water.
Stop 2 – Photo of Lake Ft. Phantom Hill
north of Abilene
Note the color of the water and that water level is
quite low. Once treated at the Northeast or the
Grimes Water Treatment Plants this provides
excellent drinking water. This is the main supply
of water for the City of Abilene.
Stop 3 - Brazos
River in Ft. Griffin
State Park
Stop 4 – Hubbard
Creek Lake
Hubbard Creek Lake is located on Sandy Creek, Hubbard Creek
And Bushy Creek in Stephens Country (tributaries in the Brazos
River System). This lake has been a major supplier of water to
the city of Abilene in times of need.
Stop 5 – Possum Kingdom Lake
This is supposed to be a good lake
for Striper fishing. Created by
Morris Sheppard Dam impounding the
Brazos River.

Stop 6 - Morris Sheppard Dam at

This dam reminds us that Possum Kingdom
lake is a man-made lake
