From the President’s desk:
As we look to the New Year, may it be God’s will that we should all find in our hearts
peace, love and friendship for one another. The sentence, “And you shall love your
neighbor as yourself”, should always be before us.
In order for us to be able to continue to run Bet Israel we need to increase our income and
cut down, as far as is possible, on expenses. The main expense, which it is in our power to
reduce, is electricity: Remember to switch off all unnecessary lights and air-conditioning.
Since, unfortunately, a number of our long-time members are no longer with us (like Henry
Marks ‫ ז"ל‬who passed away last January), it is incumbent upon us to try out utmost to
bring in new members. Every single one of us can contribute in this most important
endeavor. “A friend brings a friend”, or a neighbor, or a family member . . .
We have so much to offer! In addition to our beautiful and welcoming sanctuary, with its
full-egalitarian services at which everyone is included, we have so many other activities so
that there is something for everybody: Concerts, movies, educational classes (starting
after the holidays – see article on page ****), Israeli dancing and bridge, both twice a week
on Mondays and Thursdays, an exercise class for women on Thursday mornings and
special programs every month arranged by BICA. With all this to choose from, who can
refuse to at least try us? And don’t forget to tell your friends to check out our website:
www.betisrael.org The website was set up and is maintained to perfection by Batya
Fonda. It’s always right up-to-the-minute, so there’s always new news, pictures and
articles to read.

Allow me to make a special plea to those of you who are able to come to morning minyan
weekdays, which begins promptly at 8am: You will have a big mitzvah, and you will be
helping us to maintain an unbroken tradition of which this kehilla is justly proud. And you

I wish everyone a Hag Sameach and thank you all for the honor of serving you for the last
5 years-plus as chair-woman of BICA.
I now hand the gavel over to three outstanding, hardworking and most capable women
(and friends as well): Hadassa Birnbaum, Edith Garfinkle, and Millie Kaparovsky, who
will continue to conduct the affairs of BICA to continue as the special helping hand to
supply Bet Israel with the necessary support it requires.
May we know a year of good health, happiness, chaverut tova, and peace.

What is “Hope”?
Psalm 27, which is recited during the months of Elul and Tishrei, up to Simchat Torah,
ends with the very powerful but enigmatic verse:
.‫יְהוָה‬-‫ אֶ ל‬,‫ ְויַאֲ מֵ ץ ִלבֶּ ָך; ו ְַקוֵּה‬,‫ חֲ זַק‬:‫יְהוָה‬-‫ אֶ ל‬,‫ַקוֵּה‬
This may possibly be translated as: “Hope for the Lord; be strong, and your heart will
become encouraged; and hope for the Lord.”
What is the meaning of the word “‫ ”קווה‬and of the phrase “'‫ ?”קווה אל ה‬Why is the phrase
repeated, and why is it coupled with the concepts of “strength” and “courage”?
Translation is a very tricky business! Here are two online translations from Jewish sources,
and if you look at Christian sources , you’ll find many more:
1. “Hope for the Lord, be strong and He will give your heart courage, and hope for the
Lord.” (Chabad.org).
2. “Wait on the LORD; be strong, and let thy heart take courage; yea, wait thou for the
LORD.” (Mechon Mamre).
So “'‫ ”לקוות אל‬could mean “hope for” or “hope in” or “wait for” or “wait on”, all of which carry
different nuances. Whichever of these appeals to us, the meaning of the verse as a whole
is certainly very different from the passive connotation normally associated with the word
“hope”, as, for example in: “I hope the weather will cool down soon!” The repetition of the

phrase, and the connection with the words “strength” and “courage”, implies that “hope” is
a very active, powerful, repetitive and even cyclical concept.
The phrase “‫ ה' אלקינו‬,‫“( ”נקווה לך‬we put our hope in You, Lord God”), is cited in the “Aleinu”
prayer, which is recited three times a day and is especially featured during the High Holy
Days. Here we expect God to take an active role in promoting universality. But Psalm 27
seems to imply that our own earnest practice of “hope” will have an effect upon our
psyche.
Emily Dickinson expressed a similar idea in her poem “Hope is the thing with feathers”:
Hope is the thing with feathers
That perches in the soul,
And sings the tune without the words,
And never stops at all,
And sweetest in the gale is heard;
And sore must be the storm
That could abash the little bird
That kept so many warm.
I’ve heard it in the chillest land,
And on the strangest sea;
Yet, never, in extremity,
It asked a crumb of me.
In Dickinson’s poem, “hope” is compared to the bird within our soul which is steadfast in
the face of adversity.*
Psalm 27 describes a wide gamut of feelings, ranging from absolute confidence in God to
utter despondency, which “hope” enables us to sustain and endure. Does “hope” or “faith”
make us strong, or, conversely, does persistence in the face of adversity keep our “hope”
or “faith” strong?
The absence of a definitive answer to this question makes the psalm particularly suited to
the spiritual tension which we feel in the period preceding the High Holy Days. A more
positive resolution to our “hope” is expressed in Psalm 40:
:‫אֹלהינוּ‬
ֵ
ֵ‫ ְתּ ִהלָּ ה ל‬--‫ ִשׁיר חָ ָדשׁ‬,‫ ד וַיִּ ֵתּן ְבּ ִפי‬... .‫ וַיִּ ְשׁמַ ע ַשׁוְעָ ִתי‬,‫יתי יְהוָה; ַויֵּט אֵ לַ י‬
ִ ִ‫ב ַקוּה ִקוּ‬
[2. I hoped fervently / I waited patiently for the Lord, and He inclined towards me, and He
heard my cry. … 4. And He put a new song in my mouth – a praise of God.]
Psalm 40 may conceivably be regarded as an answer to Psalm 27, ** but we have to work
through our “hope” before we can aspire to the resolution of our prayers.
To conclude, the final verse of Psalm 27 conveys a message which is both powerful and
open-ended. It is deceptively easy to understand, but open to different interpretations – as
is the very best of poetry. I hope you enjoy reading it and listening to some of the musical
interpretations which I’ll be presenting prior to this year’s Selichot service.

Classes at Bet Israel: Fall 2015
Bet Israel is currently planning the following classes.
They will begin after Sukkot and end two or three
weeks before Passover. Contact the Office and add
your choices to the growing list of participants.
1.
The Book of Exodus
This is a continuation of the in- depth study of Exodus which we began last
year. In addition to Hebrew text and translations, it will include varied opinions
of classical and contemporary commentators, historical background, evidence
or lack of it, as well as diverse opinions regarding the meaning and
importance of this event in the context of our ancient history. We will also
note where key events in Exodus are recalled as part of our daily prayers.
We begin with a brief review of key events which proceeded this section.
Questions and opinions are always welcomed.
The class will be taught either Monday morning at 9:30 a.m. to 10:30 or
Thursday afternoon at 3:30 p.m. to 4:30 pm. Teacher: Lenore Levin

Psalms
Many of our most beautiful songs and prayers are from the book of Psalms.
We will read the Psalms in both Hebrew and English , discuss them, listen to
a variety of melodies and perhaps learn to sing some of them.
Class will be taught by Batya Fonda on Wednesdays, at 9:15am in
English, and 4:30pm in Hebrew.

The Jewish Community of Ethiopia
Who are the Ethiopian Jews? Why were they practically unknown until fairly
recently? If they are really Jewish, what are the halachic issues causing them
such problems and pain. What are some of their ancient Jewish customs?
What is most important in helping them become a real part of our Jewish
community?
