(F20) SOYBEAN: Glycine max L. ‘Croplan Genetics RT3253’ SEED TREATMENTS IN SOYBEAN, 2007 Ronald B. Hammond Department of Entomology Ohio Agricultural Research & Development Center The Ohio State University Wooster, OH 44691 Phone: (330) 263-3727 Fax: (330) 263-3686 E-mail: [email protected] Seedcorn maggot (SCM): Delia platura (Meigen) Soybean aphid (SA): Aphis glycines Matsumura Bean leaf beetle (BLB): Cerotoma trifurcate (Förster) Japanese beetle (JB): Popillia japonica Newman Various seed treatments along with one foliar insecticide treatment were tested against soybean insects at the OARDC and the Northwest Agricultural Research Station near Wooster and Custar, OH, respectively, in separate trials. Each test was designed as a RCB with various insecticide and/or fungicide seed treatments and check plots, with 4 replications. Plot size was 4 rows by 50 ft at the OARDC and 4 rows by 75 ft at the Northwest Station, with 4 replications at each location. Seed treatments were commercially applied. At Wooster where SCM was the primary insect of interest, alfalfa was plowed on 27 Apr to enhance maggot populations. Soybean was planted on 8 May in 30-inch rows. At the Northwest Station, fields were planted no-till into corn residue on 22 May in 30-inch rows. Warrior was applied to two of the treatments at a rate of 3.84 fl oz/acre on 9 and 16 Aug at Wooster and the Northwest Station, respectively, a time meant to control SA. Stand counts were taken following emergence by counting the number of plants in 5-ft sections at three locations per plot. The levels of defoliation from overwintered adult BLB were recorded by rating the plots on a 5 point feeding rating scale. SA sampling began at both locations in June. Sweep-net sampling began in late July for JB adults and first generation BLB adults. Harvest data were taken in Oct at both locations. BLB data from sweep-nets were transformed with square root (x + 0.5), while JB data were transformed with ln (x + 0.5). Data were analyzed with ANOVA and means separated using LSD. A significant stand loss caused by SCM occurred at Wooster (Table 1). The insecticides Cruiser and V-10170 were able to prevent loss; however, the 2 treatments with Gaucho were unable to avoid such a loss. A stand loss did not occur at the Northwest Research Station. Foliage feeding from the BLB cohort that overwintered was evident at the Wooster location, where seed treatments with Cruiser, Gaucho, or V-10170, were able to significantly reduce feeding (Table 2). The overwintered BLB population was not observed at the Northwest location because of the late planting (Table 3). Observations indicated very few SA; thus, aphids were not counted. Because SA did not occur at economic levels, the application of Warrior provided no benefit. There were no significant differences among the plots at either location for either adult BLB or JB on any sampling date (Table 2 and 3). Significant yield differences were observed at both locations (Table 1). At Wooster, yield losses were because of the stand loss, with higher plant stands providing higher yields. At the Northwest Station, which is known to have greater incidence of various soil pathogens, yields were highest when seed fungicides were applied. Table 1.
