Lions are big cats called "King of the Jungle. They are found in Africa and India. The lion is the
second largest cat in the world.
The group formed by lions is called a pride. There can be up to 30 lions in one pride – not more
than three males, a dozen females, and their young. The size of the pride depends on how much
water and food they need.
The male lions develop a large mane of hair around their neck, which distinguishes them from
the females. The males are also larger than the females as well.
Male and female lions have different duties in the pride. Female lions are hunters of the group,
while male are guards taking care of their territory. Baby lions are called cubs. All the other
members of the pride take care of cubs. Young males leave the pride at the age of 2 ½ to 3 years
old.
Lions sleep 16-20 hours a day which makes them the laziest of the big cats. They usually lie on
their backs with feet up.
