Specialty Mushrooms Availability • • • • Gold Chanterelles: good supplies out of USA Black Trumpets: (Serbia) are now available Fresh Porcini: (USA) Market is steady Fresh Morels: (USA) very good supplies! • Frisee: Very limited supplies on extra yellow • Fennel: Supplies limited Bear in mind… • Asparagus: better availability out of Peru and Mexico is bring prices down; jumbo and extra-large sizes are a little more snug so pricing is higher on the bigger sizes. FRUIT Available and steady… • Dragon Fruit Vietnam • Gooseberry Colombia Market steady • Fuyu Persimmons are now available – first shipment out Chile • Broccoli, Broccoli Crowns, Cauliflower, Iceberg, Romaine, and Romaine Hearts; growers are pushing prices higher; anticipated extra shipping business associated with the pending July 4th holiday combined with light supplies due to quality issues seem to be driving prices higher. • Black Mission and Brown Turkey Figs Market very active. Available in 12/1 pint case, flat case and 8/1 clamshells • Cucumbers: all cucumbers are very short as we transition from Mexico to California; this includes hothouse cucumbers as well. • Mangosteen Thailand • Onions: quality is a problem out of California with thin skin desert onions not holding up; we are going to have to go north to Bakersfield for better onions but pricing will be stronger. • Baby Pineapple South Africa • Kumquat California • Longan Thailand • Rambutan Vietnam and Mexico • Pomegranate Chile NEWS June 20, 2014 Limited or inconsistent supplies… Passion Fruit: NZ Very limited supplies Gapping… Guavas & Feijoas: Out of Season Avocadoes & Tomatoes… Avocadoes: Mexican avocadoes are much cheaper than California; best deal now will be on #2 48 count avocadoes; California fruit is maintaining its pricing. Tomatoes: The Round Tomato deal will remain tight for another week until California gets going Oceanside; Vine Ripe are about 10 days away; Roma market is weak right now, but seems to be improving Cherry & Grape Tomatoes are in very short supplies Berries… Strawberries, Blackberries, Blueberries, Raspberries… all local, all gorgeous! Citrus… Lemons of all sizes are much stronger this week and will continue to gain strength as we head into the summer. New crop will start out of the desert in late August, but until that happens we will be seeing higher prices and diminishing quality. Blood Oranges – just when we thought they were done we found one last shot! – the fruit is a little rough on the outside but the interior is still good; this will be the last hurrah until they start with offshore fruit in the fall. Melons... Watermelons are starting to come off as we change from Mexican to local suppliers; prices will spike next week when we get closer to the July 4th holiday and then should come right back down. Cantaloupes and Honeydews are stable but in a week or two we should start seeing lower prices after they start harvesting in the central valley. We are currently using desert fruit along with a mix of Mexican melons and even some Bakersfield and Huron fruit; quality is very good. Stone Fruit… Good supplies of Red, Black, And Gold Velvet Apricots out of California are very good; regular Apricots have transitioned to Washington state, and quality is much improved over the old crop California; California Peaches, Nectarines, Peacherines, Black Ebony, Red Yummy Plums, Dapple Dandy (Dinosaur) Plums are all available and all very good; Washington state Bing and Rainier Cherries have hit the market; quality and sizing is very good and prices are coming off.
