Display and Display Interface Board Upgrade for
Sievers 500 Series TOC Analyzers

Purpose:
To define the process used to remove and replace the Display and Display Interface Board in
Sievers* 500 series TOC Analyzers.
2.
Scope:
This procedure describes how to remove a first generation display and display interface board
and replace them with an upgraded display and display interface board in Sievers 500 Series
TOC Analyzers (500RL and 500RLe TOC Analyzers). Note that for the upgraded display to
function properly, you also must upgrade the Analyzer’s system board (upgraded system
boards have an Ethernet port).

Safety:
This procedure requires that you gain access to the inside of the Analyzer. To avoid potentially
dangerous shock, be sure to power off the Analyzer as described in the procedure. Be sure to
follow ESD safety precautions as instructed.
4.
Materials:

Display and display interface board upgrade kit

One long Phillips screwdriver (#2)

1/4 in. open-end wrench

Wrist ground strap (disposable unit included in kit)

Bag containing four screws.
NOTE: You MUST use the enclosed screws to install the replacement board.
5.
Procedure:
5.1
If the Analyzer is taking
measurements, press the Stop
Analysis button.
5.2
(a) Insert a USB flash memory
drive into the port labeled USB
on the side of the Analyzer.
(b) Back up the current Analyzer
settings by selecting
Maintenance  Advanced 
USB I/O  Save System.

When finished, remove the USB
flash memory drive from the
USB port and store it in a safe
place.

Turn off power to the Analyzer.
Also shut off the circuit breaker
for the Analyzer.

Open the Analyzer’s door by
rotating the top latch to the left.
5.5
Put on wrist ground strap and
connect it to convenient ground
point on analyzer. (example:
ground stud on case or door)
Inside the door, use a Phillips
screwdriver to loosen and
remove the five screws.

Close and latch the Analyzer
door, and then rotate the front
panel off of the Analyzer.

Using a Phillips screwdriver,
loosen and remove the four
screws that secure the display
bracket to the Analyzer door.
5.8
Disconnect the display board
cable from the display interface
board and then pull the display
bracket away from the Analyzer.

Place the display bracket on a
static-free surface.
Using a Phillips screwdriver,
disconnect the ground wire
from the display.

Turn the display bracket over for
access the display interface
board.
Disconnect the three cables
(labeled A, B, and C). To release
cable A, rotate the latch up.
Using a Phillips screwdriver,
disconnect the four screws that
secure the display to the bracket
(labeled 1-4).
Using a Phillips screwdriver,
disconnect the four screws that
secure the display interface
board to the bracket (labeled 58).

Remove the new display
interface board (left) and display
(right) from the packaging.
Display Type A
Display Type B
Verify the display type in the
instrument. The kit contains
either flat head screws or nonflat head screws. Use flat head
screws with Display type A and
non-flat heard screws with
Display type B.

Connect the cable to the display.
Note that the display provided in
the kit may be one of two
configurations. See photo (a) or
(b). Note that the cable already
may be attached to the display
for some configurations.

If you have the configuration
shown in photo (a), note that
before inserting the cable, the
latch must be up. Slide the cable
into the connector and then
rotate the latch down to secure
the cable in place. Refer to
photo (c).

the cable into the connector and
then push the latch inward to
secure the cable. Refer to photo

Secure the new display interface
board to the bracket by
tightening the four screws with
a Phillips screwdriver.
Using a 1/4 in. open-end
wrench, remove the ground wire
completely from the bracket.
The ground wire is not used in
the new configuration.

Position the display against the
bracket and pull the quick
connect cable through the passthrough port in the bracket.

Secure the display to the
bracket by tightening the four
new screws supplied in the kit
with a Phillips screwdriver.
Do not over-tighten the screws.
Make sure the cable that
connects to the touch panel (J3)
does not get pinched or kinked
between the display and the
bracket.
5.17
(a) Before attaching the cable, you must
pull out the tab.
(b) Connect the cable to J3 by sliding
the cable into position and then
pushing in on the tab.

into place on top of the raised bar.

Connect the quick connector to the
display interface board.
5.20
Affix the metal tape so that it makes
contact with both the display and the
bracket.
The tape serves as the new grounding
device.
(Note: Picture shows a gasket, but
replacement displays no longer have
this feature.)

Connect the display board cable to the
display interface board.
5.22
Using a Phillips screwdriver, secure the
display bracket to the Analyzer by
tightening the four screws.
If necessary, remove the protective film
from the display.

If the analyzer has a clear overlay
installed on the plastic front cover, then
move on to step 5.23. If not, then install
the overlay supplied with the display kit
to the inside surface of the front cover.
Make sure to align the clear section
with the opening in the plastic cover
and make sure the mounting surface
is dry and clean.

Rotate the front panel onto the
Analyzer and snap the panel into place.
5.25
Inside the door, use a Phillips
screwdriver to secure the five screws.

Close the Analyzer’s door and rotate
the top latch into the closed position.
5.27
Restore power to the Analyzer.
Note that there may be a pause while
the Analyzer acquires an IP address
from the network.

Return the Analyzer to normal
operation.
