BOURGOYNE Bourgoyne took over Fort Ticonderoga right away. 2) It prevented the British from cutting off New England. SAINT LEDGER GATES AND ARNOLD 3) An English army of 6000+ was no more. This eliminated 1/3 of the British army in America. ORIGINAL BRITISH PLAN Howe, of course, never went to meet Bourgoyne. Bad mistake, Howe. HOWE BATTLE OF SARATOGA NOTES The British plan 1) Cut the colonies in half by driving a wedge down the Hudson River. This would cut New England off from the rest of the colonies. 2) The plan was to have Bourgoyne come south down the Hudson River and meet Howe who could come up the Hudson River and meet in Albany. The American Reaction 1) Washington sent Gates to march north and stop Bourgoyne. 2) They had wanted to stop him at Ticonderoga but the British took over the fort without firiing a shot. What happened... 1) The British supply lines got too long because the Americans were harrassing them the entire way. 2) Gates met the British by the Hudson in a region called Saratoga. 3) Two battles took place. Don’t worry about the first one. It was in the second battle that Benedict Arnold rode from a tent, took over a British battery, and won the battle. NY 1) It made the British give up fighting any more battles in the north. 1) Philadelphia fell to the British, but it wasn’t the final victory that Howe thought he would get. We just moved the congress to a different capital... York, Pennsylvania. NY PENN MD WHY WAS MONMOUTH IMPORTANT? 2) Howe SHOULD HAVE met Bougoye in Albany. By NOT doing that, Bourgoyne had no chance. NJ DEL howe’s route BATTLE OF BRANDYWINE NOTES The British plan 1) Sail from New York, up the Chesapeake Bay, march to Philadelphia The American Reaction 1) Stop the British in front of Philadelphia. What happened... 1) Washington positioned his troops behind the Brandywine Creek. 2) Howe outflanked Washington, causing Washington many losses. 3) Washington was able to escape with most of his army to Valley Forge. PENN MD NJ DEL BATTLE OF MONMOUTH NOTES The British plan 1) Leave Philadelphia for New York. With Bourgoyne’s army destroyed, Howe had to escaspe. The American Reaction 1) Try to catch the British and destroy them before the reached New York city. What happened... 1) Washington ordered his general Clinton to attack the British. He retreated instead. 2) Washington personally rallied his troops and forced the British to retreat. 3) The British gave up and escaped to New York. 2) It showed the American people that the American troops could now fight the British because of what they learned in Valley Forge from Von Steuben. 3) Washington became the undisputed general.
