BAT T
Saint Ledger was stopped
by Arnold...never made it Albany.
WHY WAS
SARATOGA
IMPORTANT?
1) It convinced the
French to join us and
declare war on
England.
BOURGOYNE
Bourgoyne took over Fort
Ticonderoga right away.
2) It prevented the
British from
cutting off
New England.
SAINT LEDGER
GATES AND ARNOLD
3) An English army
of 6000+ was no more.
This eliminated 1/3
of the British army in
America.
ORIGINAL BRITISH PLAN
Howe, of course, never went to meet
Bourgoyne. Bad mistake, Howe.
HOWE
BATTLE OF SARATOGA NOTES
The British plan
1) Cut the colonies in half by driving a wedge down the Hudson River.
This would cut New England off from the rest of the colonies.
2) The plan was to have Bourgoyne come south down the Hudson
River and meet Howe who could come up the Hudson
River and meet in Albany.
The American Reaction
1) Washington sent Gates to march north and stop Bourgoyne.
2) They had wanted to stop him at Ticonderoga but the British took
over the fort without firiing a shot.
What happened...
1) The British supply lines got too long because the Americans were
harrassing them the entire way.
2) Gates met the British by the Hudson in a region called Saratoga.
3) Two battles took place. Don’t worry about the first one. It was in
the second battle that Benedict Arnold rode from a tent, took
over a British battery, and won the battle. He didn’t get any
credit because he was laying in a tent, shot in the leg.
battle of monmouth
battle of brandywine
WHY WAS
BRANDYWINE
IMPORTANT?
NY
1) It made the British
give up fighting any
more battles in the
north.
1) Philadelphia fell
to the British, but it
wasn’t the final victory
that Howe thought he
would get. We just
moved the congress
to a different capital...
York, Pennsylvania.

WHY WAS
MONMOUTH
IMPORTANT?
2) Howe SHOULD
HAVE met Bougoye in
Albany. By NOT doing
that, Bourgoyne had
no chance.
