Lions Memorial Stadium Alumni Field

Lions Memorial Stadium Alumni Field
Alumni Field is a collaborative RHS alumni and Rolla
community project. As with the development of the Bray Sports
Complex at RHS, a committee has been formed with the goal of
securing the funding support necessary for installing synthetic
turf at Lions Memorial Stadium.
The goal is to replace the natural turf with all-weather
synthetic turf which would allow games, practices, physical
education classes, along with the marching band to use the field
during all weather conditions.
Benefits of Turf
Bulldog Football and More!!!
Lions Memorial Football Field hosts from 18 to 24 football
games for grades 8-12 each year along with hosting a marching
band festival of 10-16 bands. Since the field is natural turf, it is
difficult to have games and performances on the field during or
after wet weather without damaging the field.
Synthetic turf and football are two images that instantly
connect. However, turf’s always-ready durability makes it a
near-perfect surface not only for sports and Physical Education
classes, but also for a wide range of school and community
programs.
At most area schools with synthetic turf, the artificial surface
is installed on the football field, but the football field becomes
more than a football field. A number of schools play soccer on
the turf fields. Our vision would include installation of a field
with soccer field capabilities. This will provide further flexibility
during challenging weather conditions at Kiwanis Soccer Field.
Marching Bulldog Band
High on the list of groups benefiting from a quick-draining
facility are school marching bands. No longer are there stretches
where practice times are impacted because of weather issues.
Neither last night’s rain, nor today’s mud keeps bands from
working through their routines. For our band of approximately
200 high school and junior high students, a morning practice
session free from potential soggy pant legs and muddy shoes,
and the elimination of travel to and from the track will be very
beneficial. In addition, our band will have the opportunity to
once again host the Route 66 Band Festival, with more than a
dozen bands and their fans, without the possibility of a wet field
canceling the event.
An additional classroom
Synthetic turf fields are now looked at as more of an
essential than an extravagance, and there is a growing list of
evidence supporting the claim.
Approximately 400 high school students per day participate
in a physical education class. Currently, students and teachers
know that an evening shower or an early morning spring rain
results in another day indoors. The all-weather surface will
provide the opportunity for many more days of outdoor activities
and will be embraced by all students.
Safe and sound
Much like cleats, uniforms, and equipment, synthetic turf
has made strides towards being more athlete-friendly.
What parents like about the turf that’s being installed now
is that it is a safer surface. Grass fields, no matter how lush and
cushy they are for the first kickoff in September, become uneven
and hard as soon as football teams, soccer teams and marching
bands are mixed with a bit of wet weather.
With synthetic turf, even during a torrential downpour,
students are able to perform on a safer surface.
Fundraising and Support
All donations received for this project will be placed
in a designated 501(c)3 account in the Rolla Public Schools
Foundation (CORE) and will be use for stadium improvements.
The goal of the committee is to raise $700,000 in pledges
during 2012. This dollar amount would allow the scope of work
to include installation of synthetic turf on the game field, as well
as other possible improvements to Lions Memorial Stadium and
the Bray Complex.
