Sept 2014 CHAT AND 2011 IN THIS ISSUE From the President Work Party notice Bill Gibson Some season highlights Club Champs results More photos Club Contacts 2014 p1 p1 p2 p2 p3 p4 p6 FROM THE PRESIDENT 2014 will be remembered for its late start and short duration but despite this there are many positives as well and although we were open for just under a month we gave it heaps during that time and made the most of it! For those who had snowmaking it was certainly a season for it and many of the larger areas were surviving mainly on manmade snow until the more substantial natural falls arrived. Like us there were a handful of other ski areas who closed due to deteriorating snowpack so we weren’t alone in what was a tricky season to negotiate our way through. In the end we were in operational mode for 28 days with 2 closed days and 26 open days. The 2 closed days were the one major storm event which delivered us 35cms that we ran on for the next 4 week period. The weather for the remainder of August and into early September was simply stunning – day after day of fantastic sunrises followed by spectacular clear and warm days. This was an extended period of calm weather which I’ve not seen before and whilst it was hard to complain about it took its toll on the snowpack and by the first week in September we were starting to lose the lower mountain very rapidly. After some tough calls based around the forecast for the next 7 days our last day of operation was Sunday 7 September and with some skilful snow farming with the groomers we made it through the last weekend successfully running Pirate Day on Saturday 6 September. Over the following 10 days the snowpack depleted further and we lost the learners area and lower mountain. The drought then finally broke and by Wednesday last week snow finally arrived but it was all too late unfortunately! We had 4 great weekends of trading along with well patronised Saturday nights at Snowline and were able to run the Wellington Ski week which was a real positive. On the event side of things we ran the Club Champs, 2 corporate days and Pirate day along with our regular weekly school visits from Cashmere and Thorrington Primary schools– feedback after all these was excellent. There was a good turnout to the Mid-season meeting and it was great to be open by the time this meeting came up on the calendar. Updates were given on the season and the financial state of play and there was some time given to turning our thoughts to the future of the club and where it needs to position itself – the committee will be doing further work on this over the next few months. URGENT - SUNDAY OCT. 5TH WORK PARTY Burying the Remaining 120m of Power Cable above the Forest We need to bury the cable while the ground is wet and soft before temperatures rise. Weather looks unsettled but we are sheltered from the worst so the day goes ahead unless it snows. Ring Dean (942 5659) evenings or email [email protected]) to check details/coordinate transport etc. Anyone still needing to complete the 2013/14 work parties can come to this and get "last years" out of the way. The Club has a few grubbers and spades but bring your own if possible. At the close of the season, following the staff’s end of season meal at Flying Burrito Bros, we enjoyed another social members get together at the Twisted Hop to farewell the remaining staff that were still here and enjoyed an excellent slideshow of the season put together by Gini McIntosh. SOME SEASON HIGHLIGHTS IN PICTURES As noted by Cam, while the season was very short, we had some wonderful weather, some great crowds, and what snow there was was very skiable! As we head into summer we are putting together the lists of tasks / jobs to attend to and whilst there will be limited finances for the large projects there is, as always, a range of compliance related jobs and other maintenance projects that will need to be resourced with labour. Workparty dates will be booked in over the next couple of months - its good if you can keep an eye out for these as they are advertised and get them completed early. Summer lodge bookings are underway already and we have a number on the books along with a steady flow of enquiries. Committee have decided that members are eligible for a $100 discount on any summer booking they make at either of the lodges – another good reason to be a club member! Busy weekends - full carpark! Finally I’d like to say a huge thanks to the 2014 staff team who stood beside us through an incredibly tricky season – they too made the most of the weeks we had and were just stoked to finally get open when we did. Thank you to Committee for their ongoing support and to the membership who are what the club is all about. As I transition back out of the Mountain Managers role and back to wearing the President cap I can look back on another great team effort and whilst it’s not quite the season I was hoping for it was nevertheless a privilege to lead the staff team for 2014. Unfortunately I won’t be returning as Manager next year as I’m heading off into another business venture but I’ll still be around and look forward to a long and strong winter season in 2015. Busy weekends - lift queues ! Daylight saving is just around the corner so enjoy the longer and warmer days and until next time take care. Cheers Cam SOME SAD NEWS - BILL GIBSON It is with much regret that we record the passing of Bill Gibson, son of Rob and Anne, and brother of Sue and Mary, on 20 September. Although living in Australia, Bill has been a regular participant on ski weeks with his family over recent years and has maintained a strong connection with Cheeseman. Our heart felt condolences to the family . Rob and Anne are now in Sydney, with other family members, for Bill’s service on Monday 29 September. Cheeseman - a slice of heaven above the clouds! 2 CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS - RESULTS 2014 Combined Boys 8 & Under Jacob Hinman Combined Girls 8 & Under Amelia Gibbons Combined Boys 14 & Under Oliver Ball Combined Girls 14 & Under Clara Miles Combined Boys 18 & Under Xavier Miles Combined Girls 18 & Under Madeline Ball Combined Men Nigel Leigh Combined Women Sue Cumberworth Combined Veterans (male or female) Nigel Leigh Downhill Boys Under 10 Jacob Hinman Downhill Boys 15 & Under Oliver Ball Downhill Male 18 & Under Baxter Williams Downhill Girls Under 10 Amelia Gibson Start of GS Course Downhill Girls 15 & Under Downhill Female 18 & Under Downhill Men Madeline Ball Nigel Leigh Downhill Women Downhill Male or Female 40+ Penny Hazard GS Boys Under 10 Jacob Hinman GS Boys Under 12 Isaac Leigh GS Boys Under 14 Oliver Ball GS Boys Under 16 Baxter Williams GS Girls Under 10 GS Girls Under 12 GS Girls Under 14 GS Girls Under 16 Kaylee Oliver Katherine Rutter Clara Miles Madeline Ball GS Girls Under 18 GS Men GS Women Nigel Leigh Jan Ipenburg Slalom Boys Under 10 Jacob Hinman Slalom Boys 12 and under Slalom Boys 13 & 14 Luke Grierson Otis Williams Slalom Boys Under 16 Xavier Miles Slalom Girls Under 10 Slalom Girls under 14 Amelia Gibbons Katherine Rutter Slalom Girls 16 and under Danielle Rutter Slalom Men Alan Hinman Slalom Women Slalom Veterans Maiden Slalom Ros Service Geoff Tocker Victoria Gibbons Snowboard Open Men Cam Creswick On the course Snowboarders too!
