Professor G Q Max Lu President and Vice-Chancellor University of Surrey Supporting Surrey | 5 4 | Enhancing the student experience Your support creates lasting memories The Annual Fund benefits students across campus, from providing sports and society equipment to supporting them through the Hardship Fund. Becky Ibbotson VP Activity University of Surrey Students’ Union The Student Services team Hardship Fund transforms lives £30,000+ £70,000 £184,000 has bought new equipment for Team Surrey sports clubs has supported students in need has funded 18 projects in the last year These funds directly impact on the student experience and ensure our students have as many opportunities as they possibly can - to grow, develop, and create memories that last a lifetime. More than £184,000 has funded 18 projects in the last year. Over £30,000 has bought new equipment for Team Surrey sports clubs, helping us complete our target of top 30 in the British University and College Sport (BUCS) League table by 2017, a year early. Even with this success we continue to aspire to reach even higher within the league. The Annual Fund has also funded further student projects such as new training kit for the paramedic society and provided £70,000 for student hardship a major factor in maintaining many students’ university careers. It’s donations like these that enable students at Surrey to experience some of the best years of their lives. Having graduated in July, I can say with confidence that my time at Surrey has been the best decision I ever made, and these funds help ensure current students have the same experience. Wonderful things do happen here, and it’s thanks to your donations that they do so. On behalf of the Students’ Union, thank you for your continuing generosity and support, it truly does make a difference. Becky Ibbotson VP Activity University of Surrey Students’ Union Every year a number of students face having to give up on their dream to study at University due to unforeseen financial problems. Fortunately, our Student Services team is there to support them through the Student Hardship Fund, which this year received £70,000 from generous donors. We are determined that gifted students should be able to come to Surrey, no matter what their personal or financial circumstances, and the Fund provides a lifeline to those who face severe financial difficulties through no fault of their own. Students usually start University in a good financial position, but an unexpected circumstance such as parental redundancy, divorce or bereavement can leave students struggling financially. The Student Money and Housing Support Advisers receive requests throughout the year and see all types of people who are having difficulty making ends meet. Many of our international students, for example, are funded by their parents but if a parent becomes unwell or their circumstances change, money becomes very tight. The team also supports undergraduates during their placement year. Students can find it very difficult if they can no longer carry on with part-time jobs during their placement and are living in an expensive area with high accommodation costs. Applications are processed in 21 days but an emergency loan can be paid within 48 hours. Typically, the money funds rents but the Student Services team will also look at other avenues, such as charities, to ensure students can gain some financial stability in the longer term. Our donors provide opportunities to ensure all students have extra support available to them when they most need it. By giving to the Hardship Fund, Surrey’s alumni and friends are transforming lives and we are very grateful for their generosity. Ruth McLeod Student Support and Student Money Officer University of Surrey Supporting Surrey | 7 6 | Enhancing the student experience Boost for paramedic training Students studying for their degree in Paramedic Practice will be able to spend more time using essential training equipment with the Paramedic Society. Alongside the timetabled skill sessions in the academic programme, the group runs training workshops to boost students’ skills and confidence. The project aims to provide a positive university experience Previously, the society was limited to holding training sessions at ambulance stations, which reduced flexibility with dates and times, and also meant students had to travel outside Guildford to practise. Thanks to the support of our generous donors, the students will now have ample time to develop their skills and build their confidence as clinicians. Positive step to break down barriers £7,755 Supported by an Annual Fund grant of £7,755, this project will not only provide social structure for autistic students, but run widespread awareness and acceptance campaigns throughout the whole of the University. Supported by Anunal Fund grant By trying to create an autism-friendly campus, the University will be only the second in Europe to do so. The project aims to create a healthy atmosphere on campus, beginning to break down the stigma that plagues those with autism. Monique Botha Pyschology PhD student snowsports An Annual Fund grant of £2,500 will enable Surrey Snowsports, one of the University’s largest clubs, to compete at a higher level and offer more students the chance to try out the sport. The funding will be used to buy ski-suits, essential for top-level competition, specialist freestyle skis, safety equipment and a video camera to record perfomances to help with training and to promote the club’s activities. The Positive Autism Project is a groundbreaking programme which aims to give students with autism a safe campus and a positive university experience. In the past five years there has been a 200% increase in students with autism attending university – however, according to the Equality Challenge Unit, of all the students with disabilities those with autism are the least likely to finish their university degrees with good grades, and are the most likely to drop out. Funding promises new heights for Paramedic students now have more opportunity to practise their skills Club president Josh Hook said: “For many people, competing in sport is a very important part of university life and representing Team Surrey at the highest level is a massive achievement. Our team is attracting more dedicated, expert and diverse members each year, and, in order for us to capitalise on this, higher quality equipment is required. The funding will allow us to take part in the BUCS (British Universities and College Sports) alpine championships, the most prestigious event of the year, and give many students the opportunity to wear their university colours.” University of Surrey Supporting Surrey | 9 8 | Fostering enterprise Building a strong research culture We have a thriving postgraduate research community with more than 1,000 students studying for PhDs, working across a variety of disciplines. Supporting our PhD students and early career researchers so they receive the very best experience with excellent training opportunities is integral to the University’s new Doctoral College. Opened in autumn 2016, it forms a core part of the University’s Research Strategy and aims to build a strong research culture, provide first-class training and supervision and develop highly-skilled and employable graduates. Atti Emecz, Vice-Provost, Research and Innovation, said: “Ensuring we develop talented researchers capable of dealing with the world’s future challenges and opportunities is one of the most important and rewarding activities we do at the University. We are establishing a Doctoral College in order to improve the the experience of our PhD students and early career researchers. “We are committed to providing a quality experience for them and want them to be advocates for the University in whatever careers they take up. We know many of you share these ambitions so please don’t hesitate to get in touch if you would like to know more about how you can support us.” Furthering autism research Changes to university funding and student finance policies mean that bursaries and scholarship schemes are more vital than ever to enable exceptionally talented people to realise their potential. Bullying is a serious problem for children with special educational needs and research shows that it not only relates to emotional problems and school absenteeism but is also linked to problems in later life such as low self-esteem, anxiety, difficulties in forming relationships and even employment status. Anna Cook Named scholarships are an ideal way to ensure that the brightest students are able to complete their studies and go on to make a real impact in the world. One such supporter is alumnus Gavin Whichello, who through his company Qube Learning is funding a PhD scholarship for Anna Cook, who is investigating the experiences of children with autism. As the mother of two children on the spectrum, Anna knows only too well the challenges parents and teachers face in ensuring young people with special educational needs are not marginalised at school. Qube Learning provides vocational qualifications, functional skills and short courses. Chairman Gavin, who graduated in 1974 with a BSc in Human and Physical Sciences, believes Anna’s research chimes with the company’s ethos that education should be available to all. “As a training provider, we are committed to ensuring there are educational opportunities for all people and Anna’s PhD could lead to a better understanding of the needs of autistic children and what needs to be done to help them succeed.” Continued overleaf Anna Cook’s study aims to improve the education of children with autism University of Surrey Supporting Surrey | 11 10 | Fostering enterprise We are very grateful for the funding from Tony and Lilly UK. Supporting PhD studentships is vitally important for furthering research into some of the most pressing societal issues of our time. Dementia has a significant impact on the lives of people diagnosed and their families. Understanding ways to improve treatment for those affected is paramount and this research is expected to contribute to such knowledge. Professor David Blackbourn Head of the School of Biosciences and Medicine Partnership supports dementia study As Anna’s PhD on the previous page shows, research undertaken by our students is contributing to a wider understanding of society and helping to address some of the most pressing issues of our age. By 2025, there will be one million people with dementia in the UK, according to the Alzheimer’s Society, and 60,000 deaths a year are directly attributable to the condition. Health campaigners describe the challenges posed by the rise in dementia as a ‘ticking time bomb’. Developing new treatments and possible cures is vital. A joint studentship, funded by a chemical engineering alumnus and one of the world’s largest pharmaceutical companies, will further research into the condition. Tony Tan, who graduated in 1971, and the Centre for Collaborative Neuroscience at Lilly UK (part of Eli Lilly) are supporting a doctoral student on a study to identify if improving a sufferer’s sleep and circadian rhythm, which regulates the timing of periods of sleepiness and wakefulness, could have a beneficial effect on the neuropsychiatric symptoms that contribute to the dementia syndrome. Tony has named his studentship in memory of friend and former colleague Godfrey Blott. Tony has vast experience in the healthcare industry; he is Non-Executive Chairman of Singapore Medical Group and was the founder and Managing Director of Parkway Holdings Limited, Singapore, until 2000 and Deputy Chairman until his retirement in 2005. Founded in 1876, Eli Lilly has developed alliances and partnerships to create medicines that help improve people’s quality of life. We are also grateful for the below support: The life of inspirational researcher and lecturer Richard Hinton has been commemorated with a scholarship set up in his name. It will fund research into molecular cell biology, an area that Richard focused on in the earlier part of his career. His remarkable grasp of toxicology and pathology culminated in a definitive tome on hepatotoxicity. The new PhD research will contribute to a greater understanding of dementia. L ong-time supporter of the University, the Braithwaite Family Foundation has set up a new scholarship within the School of Biosciences and Medicine to further research into neurological biochemistry. Sophie Gwilliam Jim O’Neill scholar Rachel Wright David Ebsworth scholar Support instils confidence Language opportunities Graduate Sophie Gwilliam is living proof of the lasting value of a scholarship. She was the first recipient of the Jim O’Neill Scholarship awarded to an economics undergraduate, and has now embarked on her career with a global financial services provider. David Ebsworth is a strong supporter of German language students at Surrey, having studied the subject with Chemistry for his BSc in the 1970s, followed by a PhD in Comparative Industrial Relations. Jim, who studied for his PhD at Surrey in 1982 and former Chief Economist for Goldman Sachs, hopes his scholarship will help boost the study of economics, and assist those who may struggle financially at university. He said: “From my own background and development and everything I’ve observed, you cannot grow productivity, which is key for economic growth, unless you improve educational outcomes, particularly for those who don’t come from a privileged background.” Sophie says this has certainly been the case for her: “Being awarded the scholarship has given me the confidence to aim high both at university and in my career, regardless of my background, and I believe I have been able to fulfil my potential. Overall, I would like to thank Jim for his continued support over the last four years.” Rachel Wright is the first recipient of the David Ebsworth Scholarship and spent her placement year in Germany. She said: “The financial side of the scholarship has greatly reduced any stress I felt at the beginning of my studies about how I would be able to cover all of my bills, but it is the other benefits that have arisen out of this opportunity that I am most grateful for. “The scholarship has enabled me to fund further opportunities to aid my academic development, including being able to purchase extra books for my studies and even fund trips to Germany which have had a direct impact on my studies at university. I truly appreciate everything that Dr Ebsworth and the scholarship have done to help me.” Going for gold International kayaker and mechanical engineering graduate Jonny Tye is aiming to go for gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics and credits the support he received via a sports scholarship as invaluable to his success. Jonny Tye in action. John Bigos with Jonny on his graduation day I graduated from Surrey with a First Class Honours degree and I won two World Championship medals along the way; my scholarship made this possible. Jonny, who graduated in 2016, received the London Duck Tours Sports Scholarship, set up by MBA alumnus John Bigos. He said: “The support surrounding my scholarship helped me in all aspects of sporting and academic life from bespoke training plans and regular physio to one-to-one help managing my busy lecture schedules and exams alongside training and racing. The financial backing from John meant I could fully focus my energy on training and studying which also made a significant difference.” University of Surrey Supporting Surrey | 15 14 | Making a difference Legacy gifts inspire talented students Leaving a legacy in a will is, for many people, the single most important philanthropic gift they ever provide. Such a gift will benefit the University long into the future and is a wonderful way of commemorating a life. Such is the case with the Russell Wicks Memorial Fund, which remembers the first deputy head of our psychology department. Russell’s widow, Mary, left an additional legacy to the fund which is supporting two PhD students with their research. One PhD student recipient of the legacy funding is James Ebajemito, who is studying how sleep impacts on the efficiency of transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), a noninvasive, painless treatment that uses electrical currents to stimulate specific parts of the brain. Originally developed to help patients with brain injuries such as strokes, tDCS has the potential to treat depression and anxiety, as well as chronic pain. The Russell Wicks funding has made James’ dream of studying for a PhD possible. He said: “The Russell Wicks legacy funding came when the financial challenges and pressure I was facing could not be overemphasised. It helped me pay part of my fees so that I could concentrate on my research. I would definitely encourage more donors to support students, and, in future, I would definitely consider being a donor myself.” One of our largest legacies is supporting female students to move into the upper echelons of science. Outstanding chemist Marion Redfearn left a bequest to benefit female postgraduate students after a lifelong career in a profession dominated by men. The money is already ushering a new generation of women through the next stage of their education, such as Zoe Bushell. Zoe’s PhD is developing efficient, low cost infrared lasers that have the potential to be used in compact gas sensors. This technology could enable portable sensors to be incorporated into smartphones which might, for example, allow quick and non-invasive testing for certain diseases by monitoring chemicals in the breath or be used to detect pollution in the atmosphere. If Marion was here today I would really want to thank her for leaving such a generous gift. It has allowed me to study an area I am really interested in and will, hopefully, lead to some useful technological developments for society. Zoe Bushell Everyone can leave a legacy Dr Kathleen Urwin taught at Battersea College of Technology from 1961 to 1966 before joining Surrey in the Maths Department until her retirement in 1990. She left a legacy of £64,000 to support the library. Kathleen’s generous act will ensure the library is stocked with a wide range of new resources and collections essential to our students’ studies. Robert’s gift will enhance Lakeside training restaurant Robert is committed to helping the School provide the best hospitality and tourism education in Europe and his recent donations have also funded a new post to increase engagement and support for the School, and a major refurbishment of the training kitchens in our Lakeside restaurant, which will take place next summer. Robert Earl Founder and CEO Planet Hollywood Undergraduates on our hospitality and event management programmes gain the practical skills to run a busy restaurant through six-week placements in the kitchen and front of house. With Robert’s support the School will be able to transform the kitchen environment, giving students a true experience of how a production kitchen works. Rhian Jones, University Acting Director of Hospitality and International Hospitality and Tourism graduate, said: “We have been working with Robert’s team on the refurbishment plans and are very excited about the changes. We will be able to accommodate more students during their practical sessions and we will be using the latest technology to broadcast from the kitchen to the restaurant and classrooms. We will also introduce a greater learning experience through providing a wider variety of services, dining options and products. I would have loved working there when I was a student!” With more than 40 years in the hospitality and food and beverage industries, Robert Earl says the education and training he received at Surrey has been pivotal in his career. “I am very grateful for the opportunities university opened up for me and want to ensure that current and future students have the same chance.” University of Surrey Supporting Surrey | 19 18 | Remembering our roots Celebrating the foundations on which Surrey is built The marvellous support we have received from Battersea alumni for our Build our History project has enabled us to create a lasting record of student life – encompassing lectures, sporting successes, social activities and high jinks! The response to our initial call for graduates to come forward with memories and memorabilia was overwhelming and we have been able to swell the archives considerably and record 80 oral histories to date for posterity. To celebrate our legacy and the project’s success, we held a Battersea Showcase in September 2016 attended by more than 200 alumni and guests. The highlight of the event was the unveiling of a Battersea timeline commemorative wall in the Austin Pearce foyer. This will be a permanent reminder of our heritage, and starts with the founding of the Battersea Polytechnic Institute in 1891 through to Battersea College of (Advanced) Technology and the transition to Surrey in the 1960s. Vice-Chancellor Professor G Q Max Lu said: “I think it is very fitting and meaningful for us to pay tribute to our Battersea heritage in such a way, as it is part of the University of Surrey’s enduring and valuable legacy. aving fun in H Battersea Lake in the 1950s, courtesy of Mike Banfield S ome of the Battersea memorabilia held in our archives Battersea graduates viewing the new commemorative timeline “I would like to give my heartfelt thanks for the contributions to this project which will preserve our rich history for many generations of staff and students to enjoy and learn from.” During the course of the Battersea Build our History project, we were delighted to receive many artefacts which give a true picture of student life. These include exam papers, student magazines, scarves, music tickets, programmes, letters, posters and, of course, many many photographs. Some of our alumni have volunteered in the archives department, arranging and sorting records and identifying photos. One of these is Harriett Nailon, who graduated in Hotel and Catering Management in 1967. She was also one of our volunteers trained to conduct oral history interviews. She said: “Capturing these memories is brilliant and is a fantastic way to celebrate the Battersea legacy. The stories I have heard since being involved with the project chime well with my own experience of Battersea in that we were very conscious of the privileges further education afforded.” We would like to thank all our volunteers for their unique and wonderful stories and the artefacts they donated which capture Battersea’s essence and help bring history to life. University of Surrey Supporting Surrey | 21 20 | Investing in our future 50:50 Funding the next half century of Surrey excellence On 22 October 1966, Lord Robens at his Installation ceremony as Surrey’s first Chancellor, said: “The University…is built not for today but for the years that lie before us.” Half a century later, this vision is undimmed. Our golden anniversary is an opportunity to lay the foundations for Surrey’s next 50 years and beyond, supporting and inspiring future generations of students. While we have evolved significantly since 1966, our pledge to first-rate academic activity and finding solutions to real-world problems has remained constant. We are committed to ensuring all students have the chance to excel academically, personally and professionally, regardless of financial circumstances. And, with our growing expertise in fields such as sustainable energy, telecommunications, space, disease control and health, we are passionate about turning the new knowledge we generate into practical innovations that improve people’s lives. Vice-Chancellor Professor Max Lu said: “The ongoing support from our alumni and the generosity of philanthropic benefactors has played a critical role in the University of Surrey’s history and our growth into one of the top universities in the UK, renowned for our excellence in teaching, research and innovation. Going forward, we aspire to enhance our University’s global reputation building on the past successes. “We hope that our alumni and friends will consider taking part and making a gift to the University of Surrey. As a donor, your gifts will have a transformational impact and support the dynamic, pioneering spirit of Surrey.” To continue this legacy we are launching the Chancellor’s 50th Anniversary Appeal which offers our alumni and friends the opportunity to play a real part in shaping our future. The appeal not only marks our first 50 years, but also celebrates the 40th anniversary of His Royal Highness the Duke of Kent becoming our Chancellor. The University will deliver graduates equipped to help fill this skills gap and tackle these challenges head-on. Professor Vince Emery, Senior Vice-President, Global Strategy and Engagement Almost 70 years ago, the NHS was founded with an ambitious plan to bring good healthcare to all. It is a principle still adhered to today but at a time when we are living longer, with complex health issues, sometimes of our own making. One in five adults still smoke. A third of us drink too much alcohol and just under two thirds of us are overweight or obese. With this unprecedented demand for health services in the 21st century, there is an urgent need for a fundamental change in the design and delivery of healthcare. Surrey is responding to these challenges with its new Innovation for Health initiative which will train the healthcare workforce of tomorrow and develop the technology that will transform our services and improve patient outcomes. The University has pioneered research in areas such as biomedical engineering, medical imaging and medical physics, enabling healthcare professionals to measure the progression and treatment of disease; computer-based simulation technology for training surgeons; and cell electro-analysis for the early diagnosis of cancer. Underpinning our research will be a new suite of programmes for 2017 whose key objective is to educate students from health, bioscience, engineering and computer science to drive technology that addresses the future needs of industry and society. The programmes will be supported by an £11 million new facility, the Engineering for Health Laboratory, educating graduates able to work across engineering and health disciplines. This has been part-funded by a £5 million grant from HEFCE (the Higher Education Funding Council of England) along with a £6 million investment from the University, assisted by generous funding from the Garfield Weston Foundation, a family-founded, grant-making trust, which shares our drive to make a positive impact on society. Phillippa Charles, Garfield Weston Director, said: “We are delighted to support the new Engineering for Health laboratory. The University’s healthcare courses are amongst the most highly valued in the UK and this project reflects our commitment to support organisations that have effective solutions to helping those most in need.” The Engineering for Health Laboratory facilities will include: » A 200-seat biology laboratory » Human movement laboratory for biomechanical analysis of gait (walking patterns) and upper-limb An artist’s impression of the the new Engineering for Health Laboratory movement » An electronics laboratory to assemble and trouble-shoot hardware-based projects such as health monitoring equipment » A computing area, enabling ‘show and tell’ teaching » A learning space to develop key ideas, and for research sessions with members of the public University of Surrey Supporting Surrey | 25 24 | Volunteering support Students inspired through mentoring programmes at BoaduP Darko (right) chats with students at a mentoring reception Sreekanth Sasikumar (right) with his mentor Paul Stone “My mentor helped me talk through all of my thoughts and ideas so that I could think out loud - and she probed me when I sounded uncertain to find another option.” In Shamini’s case, the University’s social enterprise team paired her with Maria, to help her develop her MAGIC Wand hemp shake, an industrial hemp-based drink that addresses issues related to nutrition, obesity and the environment. The advice given to PhD student Shamini Holloway from her mentor Maria Evangeli, a PR and brand specialist, has been a crucial factor in helping her to set up her own social enterprise business. She said: “My parents did not go to university and were not entrepreneurs, so I did not have the support to talk through any of my ideas, ambitions or hairbrained schemes. Surrey is doing a wonderful job of giving students that opportunity to develop through listening and training.” Shamini is one of hundreds of students who each year benefit from one of the University’s mentoring programmes. All of our mentors are volunteers who share our aim to help students build a solid foundation of skills from which to launch a variety of successful careers. Through the School of Hospitality and Tourism Management Student Mentoring Programme, final-year students are brought together with more than 40 industry mentors from around the world. The pairing of Tourism Management student Ellie Rooks and Surrey alumna Pat BoaduDarko went beyond learning new skill sets and gave them both an insight into different cultures and communities. Pat’s company, pbdTravel International, runs tours with the primary objective of encouraging people (in particular migrant Africans) to see more of London and the UK in general. She was keen for Ellie to learn more about the motivating factors behind her business and invited her to a celebration by a predominantly Ghanaian and Nigerian community in Woolwich, Southeast London. Pat said: “Ellie’s appreciation of the culture and values of the gathering that evening went a long way to inform her critique My mentor has introduced me to new business connections to help with my career progression. I will cherish our relationship beyond this MBA and I am sure that Paul will be a guide throughout my career. of the company and suggest new ideas which have had a positive effect on our operations. In return, through our mentor/ mentee relationship, I got a peep into her community in Spalding, Lincolnshire - a community I plan to visit in the not toodistant future!” The true worth of mentoring often extends beyond university and becomes a long-lasting connection. MBA student Sreekanth Sasikumar has valued his relationship with MBA alumnus Paul Stone, former Vice-President of Strategy and Portfolio at Shell International, as part of the Surrey Connect Mentoring Programme. “My mentor has introduced me to new business connections to help with my career progression. I will cherish our relationship beyond this MBA and I am sure that Paul will be a guide throughout my career,” he said. We could, of course, not do all this without the volunteers who give so generously of their time. Professor Marco Mongiello, Executive Director of MBA Programmes, summed it up: “We are extremely grateful to the mentors who have succeeded in a wide variety of fields and who are willing to share their stories. The opportunity to tap directly into the knowledge of successful people, discuss their stories and the lessons learnt in achieving those remarkable results is tremendously effective in helping the students to build their own careers.” University of Surrey Supporting Surrey | 27 26 | Volunteering support The impact of our volunteers We couldn’t do the amazing work we do without our alumni volunteers. Our supporters have donated a combined total of 2,084 hours in the past year, benefiting hundreds of students. During 2015-16, 523 people contributed their experience or expertise to the University’s Volunteering Programme. Activities included acting as ambassadors at open days, mentoring students, helping to organise Surrey reunions and giving lectures and talks. Take a look at some of the ways our volunteers made a difference in the last year. Surrey Business School welcomed MBA alumna Sarah De Carvalho MBE to an MBA Business Breakfast to share her experiences as CEO of Happy Child International. We were welcomed by alumni Mark and Marina Hadley for our New York reception at Thomson Reuters in Times Square where Mark is based. Our Open Day ambassadors are very popular with prospective students and parents who enjoy hearing about the opportunities available to undergraduates. Our Law speed-networking event gave students a fantastic insight into the range of careers open to them. Reunions are a wonderful way to bring everyone back together again, to reminisce and rekindle old friendship such as the Hotel and Catering Management Class of 1986. The oral histories of alumni from our previous Institution, Battersea College of Technology, have been captured by a team of graduates, staff and students as part of the Build our History project. Our recent reception in China saw 20 graduates share their memories of Surrey with prospective students. Grad Sport brings together Surrey students and alumni at an annual event to celebrate sport at Surrey. University of Surrey Supporting Surrey | 29 28 | Financial Report Philip Grainge Chief Financial Officer Financial report 2015/16 Friends of the University of Surrey Our 50th anniversary gives us the opportunity to reflect on the University’s past successes and achievements but also inspires us to invest in our future. Crucial to our success to date has been the support of our alumni and friends and we hope we can continue to work together to shape Surrey for its next chapter. Listed on the following pages are the names of donors and volunteers who have supported the University of Surrey between 1 August 2015 and 31 July 2016. My sincerest thanks go to all of our supporters whose gifts to the University over the past year have enriched the lives of our students through the funding of the many projects, scholarships and other activities described in this report. In particular, your generosity enabled us to help students in serious financial difficulty through the Hardship Fund and ensure those from low-income families reached their potential through our scholarships programme. Alumni Class of 1946 Mr Dennis Marshall and Mrs Elizabeth Marshall Mr Alan Waters Additionally, we are very fortunate that so many freely give up their time as volunteers to improve the quality of the student experience, creating the opportunities our students need if they are to flourish and succeed. More than 2,000 hours of time was donated in the past year and allows volunteers to play an active role at the University. With all the changes in higher education, we increasingly rely on our alumni and other supporters to help maintain the trajectory of success and growth at Surrey. Please continue to spread the word and encourage fellow graduates and those who share our ambitions to join us on this journey. Once again thank you for your support - your giving transforms lives and will continue to do so well into the future. We would like to thank the following Oak Circle members who have made donations of £1,000 or more to the University in the past year. Name(s) of account holder(s) Signature(s) The support Vibhaker (Vib) Baxi received from the University when he started his degree in 1968 has been the motivating factor behind his decision to help Surrey students for more than a decade. Vib’s place on his physics course was under threat because of financial hardship but assistance and encouragement from his professor, Lewis Elton, enabled him to secure funds and continue with his degree. “If Professor Elton hadn’t helped me at the very start I would never have had the opportunities that came my way,” says Vib. “I have never forgotten that. Being a donor is my way of saying thank you and I hope that some other needy and deserving student might be afforded help in the same way I was” It was Professor Elton’s vision that drew Vib to Guildford in the first place. He had the choice of two University of London colleges, which Vib thought were the logical places to go because of their long traditions, or the newly-created University of Surrey. But when Vib came to Surrey for his interview, it was very clear which he should choose. “Professor Elton was quite inspirational and I was bowled over by how he thought physics should be taught,” says Vib. “Despite resembling a building site, with mud everywhere, I knew Surrey was the place for me.” Vib enjoyed a highly a successful career in the financial sector at CitiBank, JP Morgan Chase, HSBC and Chemical Bank. He held positions with these institutions as Treasurer/Global Manager for Money Markets, Securities and Derivatives Trading encompassing major financial markets and now continues as an Investment Management Consultant. Please send me more information on: offering professional training year placements Vib has also turned his passion for Indian music into a business as head of Navras Records, which oversees the production and distribution of classical, instrumental, vocal, devotional, traditional and fusion music from the Indian subcontinent. “The support I received changed my life,” says Vib. “My career didn’t turn out the way I imagined when I graduated, but it has worked out for the better. I am very proud of how Surrey has grown over the years. It is highly ranked and its research is making a difference to society. It has carved out its own niche with such scholastic excellence.” joining the volunteering programme leaving a gift in my will I would like to confirm I have left a gift in my will Returning the form Please return the completed form to: Alumni & Development Office, University of Surrey, Guildford, Surrey, GU2 7XH, UK Thank you for your support Your personal information will be held securely and will only be used for related academic, educational, alumni relations and fundraising purposes by the University.
