New Exhibit at NGA: America Collects 18th
Century French Painting NEW
National Gallery of Art
Oh la la, Colonial Americans were such Francophiles! French
style has long been considered the height of sophistication by
Americans. This passion is depicted in the America Collects
Eighteenth-Century French Painting exhibition held at The
National Gallery of Art from May 21-August 20, 2017. Some
70 paintings, including well known masterpieces and hidden
gems alike, will be on view. In this course, you will examine
18th century French paintings and explore America’s appetite
for French Rococo and Neoclassical styles. You will discuss
the political and social climate that influenced the artists

The Making of Impressionism
NEW
Have you ever looked at a painting by Monet, Degas, or
Renoir and wondered, how did they do that? It seems so
effortless: colors that sing, water that sparkles and wind you
could almost feel blowing through the canvas. Edgar Degas
once said, “I assure you, no art was ever less spontaneous
than mine.” Today we think of Impressionism as one of the
most popular movements in art history, but that was not
always the case. The young men and women who entered
the rigid 19th century art world were outliers. With bravery
and tenacity, they were determined to make art on their own
terms. Take a new look at art history through the eyes of an
artist, looking at paintings of the Impressionist’s movement:
how they were made technically and historically. Students

A Primer on Coup D’Etats
NEW
A coup d’etat (an illegal seizure of power) involves some
elements of revolutions, putsches, and even civil wars of
liberation; but, unlike most of them, the coup is not necessarily assisted by either the intervention of the masses, or, to any
significant degree, by military-type force. In this course, you
will examine coup d’etats from the perspectives of sociology,
political science, and present day political developments. You
will be introduced to some of the most famous coup d’etats
of the past—the Glorious Revolution, the 18th Brumaire, the
Pinochet coup in Chile, and the coup in Argentina in 1976-and try to determine if any coups are identifiable in the present.
You will also discuss their commonalities, differences, causes,

A Profile in Courage—John F. Kennedy
NEW
Kennedy’s Legacy—100 Years After His Birth
In 1954, John F. Kennedy wrote Profiles in Courage. This
book provides the biographies of eight men who exhibited
a dedication to their personal principles rather than party
politics, or even constituent desires. These men suffered
ostracism and political defeat for holding fast to their beliefs.

Cuba After Castro
NEW
What is the future of the Cuba-U.S. relationship? Since the
announcement on December 17, 2014 of normalization of
relations between Cuba and the United States, the island
has experienced a veritable revolution both in its daily life
and how they view us. The recent death of Fidel Castro and
imminent change in U.S. leadership could upend or deepen
these changes. This course will explore the legacy of Fidel
Castro in Cuba as well as any re-examination that may have
resulted from his passing. You will examine the likely scenarios that his absence brings into play in local politics, reform
initiatives, and the country’s future. You will analyze the
effects of normalization on Cuba and what, if any, reforms

Literature and Writing
American Short Stories
New Content! Barbara Kingsolver says a good short story is
“the successful execution of large truths in tight spaces.” What
truths do American writers see and portray in their time and
place? What can we learn when we read short stories written
by some of the finest American writers? Joyce Carol Oates has
selected representative authors and their works in The Oxford
Book of American Short Stories. Oates defines the short story
as a form that “represents a concentration of imagination” …
and that, “when it ends, the attentive reader understands why.”
This course will explore the truths and the imaginative works
of significant American authors, classic to contemporary,
written by authors such as Mark Twain and Willa Cather, John

Heaven, Hell, and In-Between: The Story

Have you wondered about Dante’s vision of hell, purgatory,
and paradise? At the very beginning of the fourteenth century
in Italy, Dante drew upon the work of the troubadours, the
Greeks, the philosophers, and the Church to write the first
Italian vernacular literature. Dante transformed his experience into the account of his incredible journey through hell,
purgatory, and paradise, guided by his lady love, Beatrice,
and the poet Virgil. You will read portions of the poem, Divine Comedy, and explore art and films associated with this
singularly important piece of world literature. A master observer of the human condition, Dante’s work has influenced

How the Protestant Reformation Made
Our World NEW
The Five Hundred Year Anniversary (1517-2017)
Have you ever wondered how the Protestant Reformation
began and how it impacted religion and politics? On October
31, 1517, Martin Luther famously nailed 95 theses to the
door of a church in Wittenberg, Germany, and over the tumultuous course of the next 150 years, wars of religion, civil
wars, and religious controversies raged. As a result of this
religio-political crisis, North America was settled, church and
state were separated, and religious freedom was established
in the American political system. The course is an examination of the making of the King James Bible and its cultural
impact, as well as the events, people, writings, and impact
of the Protestant Reformation, which celebrates its 500th anniversary in 2017. Recommended reading: All Things Made
