Dear Van Wert High School,
During your senior year and throughout high school, your teachers are
trying to prepare you for college classes and they always say repetitively “the
professors don’t baby you”. And of course everyone has heard it thousands of times
that you just say, “I know”. I do not doubt anyone’s knowledge that they do not
understand that. Nevertheless, you never really understand or grasp it until you are
thrown in. It is such a big shock from high school classes to college classes. They say
in college, that for every hour of lecture you have you should study 3 hours. It may
sound like a big joke, but it is no joke. You have to commit yourselves to studying if
you want to succeed in college.
In a big lecture the material is taught at a very fast pace, and if you are not
keeping up, it is hard to get caught up. The professors expect you to get material
very quickly. The professors have office hours that you can get help, but they have a
lot of students and not much time. They highly recommend tutoring, which is not for
just lack of intelligence. It is helpful to everyone, even if you know the material. It
works as a helpful study aid.
The hardest thing about college, at first, was finding a good system of
studying and organization that works for you. The professors do not have degrees
in education; they have degrees in their field. Some do not have clever teaching
methods that make learning fun, it is just the material and you have to interpret
what it means fast. Everything in college just moves at such a faster pace than high
school, you have to figure out ways to keep up. It is a lot of strategy and knowledge
to figure college classes out. Best of luck to you all this year!

Celebrities are a
popular subject to
be searched weather
they are sports stars,
actors, or singers,
but many feel that
they are safe to
search which is a
false assumption.
According to the
latest FBI statistics
on cybercrime, 52
percent of computer

some sort of
intrusion of their
computer system.
So who are the most
dangerous celebrities
to search on the web?
Former Seventh

Biel, is the number

Following Biel is
Beyonce Knowles and
Jennifer Aniston as
the number two and
three most dangerous
stars to search.
“All of our

director John Butler
said. “With the use of
Norton, you can see
that we have a lot less
problems with our
computer than other
schools that don’t.”
Many web sites
or viruses disguised
as web sites will use
celebrity’s names
as links to their
sites to lure people
in. As a result of
going to that site
with an unprotected
computer, a virus can
get in and take over.
“If the web site

Finishing off the
top five is football
player Tom Brady
and singer and reality

there are reliable

Classes provide assistance with job security
New teacher takes over Mr. Lianez’s position as spanish
teacher. Ms. Hess directs student, kieth Prill, on bookwork.
“She actually makes us do work outside
of class, so now I actually have to learn it
and not just do it,” Hauter said.
Hess is at just the beginning of her
career here at VWHS.
“I look forward to spending this stage
of my life here at Van Wert, and impacting
my students in a positive way, instilling
a passion for the Spanish language and
culture.”

teacher, the Spanish program
said farewell to Senor Dave
Lianez last year. The students
were sad to see him go, but a change was
welcome this year with the arrival of the
new Spanish teacher, Andrea Hess.
“I was a bit nervous to take up Senor’s
job, after he was here for 42 years. Yet,
as I arrived, I’ve received a lot of positive
feedback from the students, faculty, and
community,” Hess said
Hess has come with contemporary ideas
for education, and well qualified in Spanish.
“Spanish was definitely my first love in
the way of languages. I’ve studied Spanish
for 12 years, and got my teaching license in
Indiana. I student taught and observed at
two different schools in separate districts
in Fort Wayne. So I’ve been able to see how
things work in different school systems, and
establish my curriculum.” Hess said.
The students have embraced her as their
new Spanish teacher, and her new ideas.
“I was really excited to have a new
Spanish teacher. I felt the program had
gotten a little systematic and needed
a change. She has a very open way of
approaching the language. Which I know
will help me learn the language a lot better.
It’s a lot different than just filling out
worksheets.”, Senior Alyssa Hartman said.
Junior Anthony Hauter has found his
knowledge of the Spanish language growing
with the new ways of learning.

With the
outbreak of H1N1,
or better known as
swine flu, schools
all over the United
States have been
trying to find ways
to cut back on the
risk of spreading
germs and other
harmful bacteria.
“We originally
got the idea from
Findley schools,”
Clifton said, “We
saw that they had
a system going and
decided to go upon
that.”
Clifton, along
with the health
department decided
to use foam sanitizer
instead of liquid to
be used on a regular
basis. Foam lasts
almost twice as
long as liquid does,
helping the school cut
back on costs.
“The most
important thing to
stress to students is to
use them, not abuse
them,” Clifton said.
