INSTRUCTIONS FOR LIGHTING Maundy Thursday Evening Mass 1. RAMBO will not control the lighting once people begin receiving communion. All lights are controlled from the lighting box next to the organ, by Carolyn Peet. 2. After all have received communion, Carolyn Peet goes to the “tunnel” and turns off, at the box, lights 7, 12, 16, 23 and top wall switch for exit lights at rear of church (5 switches have yellow smiley faces on them). She stays in the choir area, next to the light box. 3. Full house lights are on (Scene 3) during the singing of Hymn 329 (Now my tongue the mystery telling). 4. At the end of Hymn 329, and after the procession with the Blessed Sacrament has completely left the church, Carolyn pushes Scene 9. 5. When all of the activity in the sanctuaries (stripping of the altars) has ceased, and the priests are seated in the choir pews, Carolyn pushes lights OFF (button directly under Scene 8). The account of Jesus’ agony in the garden is then read. After a minute of silence, the clergy and assistants leave the choir area and Carolyn presses 10, and turns on #12 (narthex light) in the tunnel. (2) 2nd server places food on left side of altar and moves to seat (3) 1st server hands collection to Celebrant, descends to credence table and procures banded flagon (baptistery), hands flagon to Sub-Deacon, then stands to left. c. After presenting the hosts to the Celebrant, Deacon: (1) returns to S-D and retrieves chalice, goes to lay person carrying water, take water flagon with lid open, turn to Celebrant, hold flagon up for blessing. (2) Then prepare large flagon with splash of water, go to S-D prepare banded flagon with a splash of water, hand water flagon to 1st server (3) return to lay person with large flagon, receive flagon and pour prepared wine into chalice, about 1/3rd full (4) take chalice and flagon to altar, with S-D presenting banded flagon, present chalice to C, place flagons on corporal e. D & S-D descend, turn to face altar, reverence and go to places at Epistle side back of altar . Deacon in place for censing. B. No doxology – presentation hymn C. Censing 1. after presentation, choir starts censing hymn, 2. C makes incense at altar right rear with Thurifer, Boat Boy; censes altar, returns to right rear of altar; hands thurible to Deacon. 3. After Ablutions, empty vessels are removed to Sacristy. B. Assisting Priests leave sanctuary and return to their seats. C. Deacon removes Chasuble, puts on Dalmatic, turn off mic., goes to sacristy door and puts on Humoral Veil D. Sub-Deacon, Deacon, and Celebrant take places in front of Altar. E. Celebrant leads the Post Communion Prayer VI. PROCESSION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT A. Hymn 329 starts right after Post-Communion prayer B. Thurifer comes out, Celebrant makes incense, all kneel C. Celebrant bows, censes Sacrament, bows; D. Celebrant and Sub-Deacon stand and go to their seats on the sides and kneel E. After Celebrant and Sub-Deacon are kneeling on the side, procession lines up: Thurifer, Boat-Boy, 1st Crucifer and Torches, Deacon with Ciborium F. Process down main aisle to Altar of Repose G. Deacon lights the candles and the Sanctuary light. 4. Crucifer and Torches line up behind the Deacon. All kneel. 5. Deacon rises, puts ciborium in the Tabernacle, genuflects, and all process back to the Sacristy through the side door near the Acolyte Room. 6. Altar Guild at door - unlocks or hold open. 7. Deacon and processional party return through the side door near the Acolyte Room, remove Dalmatic, Surplice, external vestments, reenter Sanctuary garbed only in Cassock to help in the stripping VII. STRIPPING OF THE ALTAR A. Stripping begins as soon as Hymn 329 is over. B. Lights 1. Nave lights are turned off 2. Sanctuary lights remain on but dimmed. C. Acolytes 1. remove surplices, hand them to MC, and take seats in the choir if you are not assisting in the stripping of the altar 2. Servers extinguish candles as directed by MC 3. Thurifer- help the celebrant at the high altar D. Priests de-vest to cassock, Acolyte Warden picks up priests chasubles, albs, cinctures; go to and strip areas assigned E. Altar party strips to cassock, assist in stripping altars F. After stripping Altar, all reenter into Choir seats G. Celebrant goes to jump seat and reads Gethsemane passage 1. After reading – time of silence is observed. 2. Lights come on dimly, leave in silence and clergy and servers leave through tunnel. VIII. CONCLUSION OF SERVICE: Rector gets up - lights come up dim for people to exit.
