Activity 7.1.4 Measuring Your Classroom Introduction Depending on the reason that you are measuring a room, there are different measurements that need to be taken. For example, if you're putting in a floor, you need to know the area of the floor. If you are painting, you need to know the area of the walls and ceiling that need paint. And if you're putting up a wallpaper border, you need the perimeter measurement of the room. Accurate measuring is necessary to ensure that you buy enough, but not too much, of the material you will need to complete the project. Overbuying construction materials often leads to discarding materials in a landfill. Classroom Floor plan Fill in the spaces below using the appropriate measurements provided. Door openings measure at 3 ft. wide. Windows will also be 3 feet wide. ---3 ft.--- 1 ft. --------18 ft.-----------------3 ft.--- -- 2 ft.-- --------------16 ft.------------© 2012 Project Lead The Way, Inc. What is the Perimeter of this classroom? 2. What is the Area of this classroom? 3. To calculate the amount of ceiling tiles needed for a classroom, would you use the area or perimeter formula? 4. Write the formula you would use here: 5. Calculate the square footage of ceiling tiles needed for a 36’ x 42’ rectangular classroom. 6. If each ceiling tile is 2’ x 2’, how many tiles should you buy? 7. Your teacher wants to put a wallpaper border around the classroom where the ceiling meets the walls. How many feet of border should be purchased? © 2012 Project Lead The Way, Inc. PLTW Gateway – Green Architecture Activity 7.1.4 Measuring your Classroom – Page 2
