The Minister for Tourism and Major Events, John Eren today announced
British cyclist and sprint powerhouse Mark Cavendish will ride in the Cadel
Evans Great Ocean Road Race, Elite Men’s Race on Sunday 31 January
2016.
Olympian, former world champion, Tour de France legend and world class
sprinter, 30 year old Cavendish will race for the first time with his new squad
Team Dimension Data, who have just been awarded a UCI WorldTour
Licence.
The only place in Australia this summer to see Mark Cavendish race is in
Victoria at the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race making it a must-attend
event for anyone who loves road cycling.
This is a major coup for the event and a credit to the world class racing
conditions in Geelong and the Bellarine Peninsula.
“Mark Cavendish is without peer. He’s one of world cycling’s all-time greats,
and he’ll be a major drawcard at the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race.
“We wanted cycling’s biggest names in Victoria and that’s exactly what we’ve
got. The top names belong in the state that does the big events best.
“We want the big sporting events in Victoria, because they mean jobs for
locals and a stronger economy,” said Minister Eren.
Cavendish will line up with two stars of Australian racing, Rohan Dennis riding
for BMC Racing, and Simon Gerrans riding for ORICA-GreenEDGE,
Mark Cavendish has a huge following amongst sporting fans and is looking
forward to racing down under with Team Dimension Data.
“I am looking forward to starting the 2016 season in Victoria and racing for the
first time with Team Dimension Data at the Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road
Race.
“I’ve heard great things about the challenging Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road
Race course and I’m especially excited to visit Geelong again – last time I was
there was for the 2010 UCI Road World Championships,” Cavendish said.

The Cadel Evans Great Ocean Road Race has confirmed that the 1.HC
Classification Race will feature nine UCI WorldTour teams (BMC Racing,
ORICA-GreenEDGE, Team Sky, Team Katusha, Lotto-Soudal, Trek Factory
Racing, Team LottoNL-Jumbo, IAM Cycling and Team Dimension Data), four
UCI Pro Continental teams (UnitedHealthcare, ONE Pro Cycling, Drapac
Professional Cycling, Team Novo Nordisk) and the Australian National Team.
The ultimate weekend of cycling also includes the Elite Women’s Race and
the Momentum Energy People’s Ride, featuring a 65km and 111km course
where participants can ride shoulder to shoulder with Cadel Evans on his first
People’s Ride as a recreational cyclist.
