VantagePoint Special Edition | November 2009 A Publication of Evangelical Homes of Michigan 2009 ANNUAL REPORT Dear Friends: Even as Evangelical Homes of Michigan continues to create communities and change lives, we also provide care and support to those in the communities in which we work and live. In order for us to stay true to ourselves, it is important that we reach further outside ourselves and support those who need us. While our economy has been through dramatic changes over the past year, the needs of older adults continue to increase. As a not-for-profit organization, our success is defined by how we reach out and give back to our local communities as well as by the success of our key strategic indicators. On many of our new marketing materials you will see the image of hands holding a butterfly. The butterfly is a powerful symbol for transformation. We celebrate transformation as part of our primary mission — to define Evangelical Homes of Michigan by broadening our reach and creating a dynamic and ever changing array of programs and services. In addition to our community outreach services, we have grown our continuum of services to include our new Memory Support Center at Brecon Village. This 33,000 square foot center is the first of its kind in our area and provides specialized care to those facing the challenges of dealing with memory loss. The need for this specialty care has grown in demand and we were blessed with the resources to provide such a service. The opening of the new community is a celebration of hope and support to the families that we will touch each day. Inside: 4 — The Memory Support Center Grand Opening It is our duty as a not-for-profit organization to provide exceptional mission-driven care as well as to be financially accountable to ensure a stable future for all of the lives that we touch. Integrity, transparency and accountability are integral parts of our key strategic initiatives. We continue to adapt and adjust in order to ensure future growth and innovation. As we strive to give exceptional care, we are driven by giving to others in need. You will be enriched in every way for your great generosity, which will produce thanksgiving to God through us; for the rendering of this ministry not only supplies the needs of the saints but also overflows with many thanksgivings to God. (Corinthians 9: 11–12) May we remain steadfast on our path of great generosity! Blessings Always, 6 — 2009 Rev. C.W.F. Ingraham Chair Board of Directors “If Evangelical Homes of Michigan disappeared tomorrow, would anyone notice?” When a consultant asked that question in 2003, it started a discussion of the impact Evangelical Homes has made on the wider community. And the answer to the question turned out to be a resounding yes!—Evangelical Homes of Michigan would be missed. In the fiscal year just ended, we: • S erved nearly 2,000 individuals and their families by providing more than 44,600 days of care in residential settings and more than 12,700 visits in home health care. • Provided more than $2.1 million of unreimbursed charitable care and services to residents. • Residents received almost 12,000 hours of loving attention from volunteers. • Invested more than $3 million improving our health care communities. • Prepared more than 10,700 home-delivered meals. • Held flu shot clinics at 15 churches through our Church Ambassador Program and administered 700 vaccines. An additional 50 doses were donated to a homeless shelter. • Employed more than 1,000 individuals paying nearly $24 million in wages and benefits, including nearly $1.4 million in employer paid health insurance premiums and $406,000 in retirement benefits. • Provided a training site for 139 student nurses and other interns and provided more than $17,000 in tuition assistance to staff. • Provided for the training and education of direct care staff at a cost of nearly $26,000. If Evangelical Homes of Michigan disappeared tomorrow, would anyone notice? The answer is the same—a resounding yes! We touch the lives of thousands of people and help make our world a better place to live. We lovingly contributed more than $87,000 of financial support, material support and servant leadership to charities and community organizations including: Aging Services of Michigan Alzheimer’s Association American Association of Homes and Services for the Aging American Cancer Society Angela Hospice Ann Arbor Art Center Arbor Hospice Bethel Lutheran Church Breast Cancer 3-Day Walk Cass Corridor Park-Meals to Homeless Coalition for a Quality Community Community Foundation of St. Clair County Council for Health & Human Service Ministries Delonis Homeless Shelter, Ann Arbor Detroit Metropolitan Association, United Church of Christ Fort Gratiot Rotary Governor’s Long Term Care Advisory Commission Grosse Ile Presbyterian Church Holocaust Memorial Center Hope Clinic International Hope for Children Keystone Community Church-Saline Michigan Association of Art Therapy Michigan Chapter of the American College of Health Care Administrators Michigan Conference, United Church of Christ Michigan Humane Society Michigan Prisoner Re-entry Program National Association of Activities, Therapy and Rehabilitation Program Directors National Association for Directors of Nursing National Fire Protection Association OES Rescue of Michigan Sage-ing Guild Saline Community Directions Saline Fiddlers Saline Rotary Saline Senior Center Meals on Wheels Program Saint Joseph Mercy Hospital Macomb Home Care Professional Advisory Group The Educational Association for Continued Health (TEACH) United Church of Christ Women of Michigan United Way, Washtenaw County VISION, Inc. We opened our specialty center for tours, a ribbon cutting ceremony and special keynote speaker Michael Skupin from Survivor: The Australian Outback. Nearly 400 of our friends, families, colleagues and community members attended the event and saw for themselves what makes this new service the first of its kind in southeast Michigan. The Memory Support Center was designed to meet the needs of residents, day program participants, caregivers and the community-at-large, and to provide support through the many stages of memory loss. Our specialized caregivers gear daily activities, support, and care to meet each individual’s needs. Located on the campus of Brecon Village in Saline, the new Memory Support Center includes private apartment suites, four technologically enhanced cottages, adult day services (available 7 days a week), a resource library, specially designed gardens and all of the amenities and services the community has come to expect from Evangelical Homes of Michigan. We did extensive research to identify special program enhancements that combine the offering of exceptional care and innovative technologies, while offering residents a secure environment, individualized programs, medical and social support, and meaningful activities. VantagePoint-Special Edition |4| www.evangelicalhomes.org VantagePoint-Special Edition |5| www.evangelicalhomes.org Jim Alspach Receives Rev. C. W. F. Haass Award The Board of Directors of Evangelical Homes of Michigan is pleased to announce that Mr. Jim Alspach has been awarded the 2009 Rev. C.W.F. Haass Award. When Jim Alspach relocated to Michigan in 1989, he became acquainted with and involved in Salem United Church of Christ in Farmington. Through that involvement, he became familiar with Evangelical Homes of Michigan. The Rev. Dr. Lowell Schrupp, a fellow church member and Evangelical’s former Executive Director, invited Jim to consider filling a seat on the Board of Directors, which he joined in 2004. Jim Alspach has been involved in a number of business enterprises over the years, and it was his business skills that were seen as an asset to the future development of Evangelical Homes of Michigan. However, Jim’s philosophy as a member of the Board, just as an operator of a business, meant that one needed to understand the operations of the organization, to be involved and be able to educate fellow Board members and interpret Evangelical’s mission to people in the community. As a member of the Board, and most recently the Past Chair, Jim Alspach not only had frequent and regular meetings with Denise Rabidoux, President and CEO, but he also went on his own to visit the communities operated by Evangelical Homes of Michigan. He even accompanied home care staff on visits during his vacation time. His goal was to be the most informed member of the Board. Haass Award is a philanthropic award given to those people who have exhibited exemplary financial and personal commitment to the mission and core values of Evangelical Homes of Michigan. The award pays tribute to the memory of Rev. Haass, a church leader whose leadership and advocacy led to the financial stability of Evangelical Homes of Michigan during the late 1800’s, by honoring those persons who share his commitment that Evangelical Homes of Michigan continues to meet the needs of those in need in southeast Michigan. Jim has supported Evangelical Homes of Michigan with his gifts of time, talent and financial support, and we are grateful for his leadership. VantagePoint-Special Edition |6| www.evangelicalhomes.org A SPECIAL message FROM EVANGELICAL HOMES OF MICHIGAN Our precious friends of Evangelical Homes of Michigan, We are so very grateful to our growing number of donors, who contributed over $556,000 in gifts and pledges during fiscal year 2008–09. Your loyalty and commitment to serving the residents and clients of Evangelical Homes of Michigan is unwavering and we truly appreciate your gifts. Last year we received more than 1,000 donations from 780 donors, half of whom were first time donors and half of whom returned as donors from a previous year. We are very grateful for those of you who continue Our Honor to make Evangelical Homes of Michigan a priority for your charitable contributions each year. Roll of Generosity begins on the following page and recognizes gifts made May 1, 2008 – April 30, 2009 Private support makes a big difference in our ability to bridge the gap between government subsidies and the cost to provide care. During fiscal year 2009, we provided charitable care amounting to more than $2 million, while investing $6.6 million in building our new Memory Support Center and $3 million invested in general capital expenses. These numbers demonstrate our commitment to maintaining affordable residential care and community services, while developing innovative programs for our constituents in order to improve quality of life for all. At the time of this printing, our separate capital campaign for the Memory Support Center at Brecon Village has reached more than $1,622,000 and exceeded our first goal of $1.6 million. These gifts from more than 420 donors have spanned three fiscal years. Thank you so much for helping to bring this exciting new center to our community. We are continuing to raise the final $378,000 to complete the campaign during our current fiscal year. Finally, the volunteers who have helped us tell our story and raise these donations include nearly 80 individuals from churches, local communities, and residents and their families. For your volunteerism, support, hard work, dedicated leadership and faith in our ability to fulfill our mission, we thank you from the depths of our hearts. We confidently look forward to increased philanthropic support that will help bring continued and increased services to older adults and their families in southeast Michigan. VantagePoint-Special Edition |14| www.evangelicalhomes.org Recognizing legacy gifts Over the years, we have benefited from the generosity of individuals and families who have thoughtfully included a gift to Evangelical Homes of Michigan through a gift from their estate. Individuals who have made plans to designate a future gift to Evangelical Homes of Michigan through a bequest, a charitable gift annuity, or as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy or retirement plan are recognized as members of the Zoar Legacy Society. The Zoar Society was formed in 1879 to support the work of Evangelical Homes, particularly the Zoar Home for orphans in Detroit. The name “Zoar” has a biblical origin, connoting a place of refuge and safety. It is fitting that today the Zoar Legacy Society recognizes the generosity of individuals who have made future gifts ensuring that Evangelical Homes of Michigan will continue its mission of providing places of refuge, safety and compassionate care for generations to come.
