Congratulations to 5th grade student Brant Widlowski for qualifying for the Middle School IESA State Wrestling tournament, which begins tonight at Northern Illinois University in DeKalb. Good luck Buddy! CCIS is very proud of you! Penny War to Fight Childhood Cancer Continue saving your pennies! Our Penny War is going on NOW through March 24th. The staff members who receive the most donations will have to “choose their fate” on 3/24! Will they have to eat something gross, hot or sour, or will they have to kiss a goat?!? All money collected will be given to a children’s hospital for cancer research. Skating “Week” During PE – March 20, 21, 22 All students will walk to the Coal City Family Skate Center to roller skate Monday – Wednesday, March 20-22 for PE and all of the their Specials for those three days. Please return the permission/waiver form as soon as possible. Contact Mr. McCleary with any questions at [email protected]. Youth Art Night March is Youth Art Month! Join the Coal City Unit #1 Art Department at the Coal City Public Library on Wednesday, March 15th from 5:00-6:30 p.m. to celebrate Youth Art Month. There will be about 30 pieces of art from each school on display. Students in all buildings are also working on a collaborative art project to be displayed at the library inspired by VanGogh's sunflowers by coloring a flower (provided by art teachers) at home and returning it to their art teacher prior to March 15. All members of the community are invited to display their artwork. Artwork may be dropped off to Danielle in the Teen Department at the Library. Artwork may include paintings, sketches, sculptures or any art you would like to share with our community! If you have a large item, please contact Danielle at 815.634.4552 x112. There will also be snacks and a family craft in the Meeting Room. Community artwork will be on display March 15th through March 25th. PSO Movie at The Mar Theater Join the PSO for a day at the movies to see Disney's Beauty and the Beast (rated PG) on Saturday, March 18th at the Mar Theatre in Wilmington. Showtime is 3pm with doors opening at 2:30pm. PSO is paying for a portion of the tickets, so the cost to you is only $5.00 per person. This includes the movie ticket, small popcorn, and small pop. Please remember to bring CASH to pay for your tickets. They will not accept credit/debit for admission. You CAN use your credit/debit card for concessions. This event is for all families of Coal City Unit District #1. Children must be accompanied by an adult to attend. Plunge Into Fitness Students are able to earn a free pass to Raging Waves Water Park in Yorkville if they complete a Fitness Log by April 10th. All they have to do is fill in each section along the path for every 30 minutes of exercise they complete. Start exercising and return the form to Mr. McCleary! Parent Communication Survey The Board of Education has requested information on how the school district can best communicate with our parents. Your participation in this survey will help guide future school district communication efforts. Please use this link to take this short survey. http://bit.ly/2mkC7DL Splash Station Reading Incentive CCIS is participating in “Reading is Splash-tastic”, a reading incentive program offered by Joliet Park District’s Splash Station. The students have been given reading logs that are due back by April 13th. They are required to read 360 minutes of any recreational reading that they want. Remember homework and class lessons do not count towards this. Each student who completes the 360 minutes of reading will receive a free waterpark ticket to use this summer. Camp Invention Early Registration Mark your calendars! Our annual science camp will be June 12th - 16th from 9:00 – 3:30 at CCIS for students entering K – 6th grade. At Camp Invention students will be brainstorming, exploring, constructing, collaborating and discovering! Fill out the form and make an appointment for Wednesday, April 12th at the Early Childhood Center. Contact the ECC office with any questions at 815-634-5042. Students will need to be 5 years old on or before September 1, 2017 in order to participate in Kindergarten Round-Up. CCIS Musical Everyone is welcome to CCHS on Thursday, March 23rd for one of our three performances of the musical Peter Pan, Jr., which is sponsored by Mrs. Ness and our Student Council. Show times are at 10:30, 1:15 and 4:00 in the HS Auditorium. The performances are open to the public. Student Council is asking for a $5.00 optional donation ($2.00 for students). All proceeds will go to Lurie Children’s Hospital. PARCC Testing CCIS will take the PARCC assessments the week of April 10th and 18th. The PARCC (Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers) exam is an internationally benchmarked assessment of applied knowledge designed to measure the new Illinois learning standards. Students will take four 60-minute Math assessments and three 90-minute English/Language Arts assessments. Students will take the assessments on a computer/Chrome book. They will use headphones/ear buds because portions of the tests will have audio. Practice tests are available at http://parcc.pearson.com/practicetests/. Note – this web address does not work on all browsers. Parent-Principal Collaborative Conversations Do you have any suggestions or questions about your child’s school experience at CCIS? You can always call or email at any time, but I would like to invite you to our ParentPrincipal Collaborative Conversations. Please come to meet with me, Principal Tracy Carlson, and other parents for some good conversation, coffee and other breakfast treats. Please RSVP by calling the office at 815-634-2182 so we know how many to expect. We will meet on Friday, March 24th from 8:00-9:00 a.m. at CCIS. A few of the topics will include the PARCC assessment and our curriculum. I hope you can make it! Donuts for Dads – Muffins for Moms On Friday, April 7th from 7:30-8:00 a.m., CCIS will host Donuts for Dads. The RSVP form is due back by 3/17. If Dad cannot make it, students can ask a grandfather, uncle, or any significant role model to attend. We will serve one donut and one milk per person for FREE. Parking will be very limited, so we really appreciate your patience. You can park along Garfield Street or at the Public Library. We ask that all visitors enter through the back cafeteria doors that morning, near the playground blacktop. Muffins for Moms will take place on Friday, May 12th from 7:30-8:00 a.m. Pi (3.14) Day is March 14th National Pi Day is Tuesday, 3/14. Pi is the never-ending number that represents the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter. It is usually just rounded to 3.14 so it’s easier to work with. The symbol for Pi is actually the 16th letter of the Greek alphabet. Students who want to enter the Pi Day contest should memorize as many digits of Pi that they can by March 14th. The contest will take place during recess. The winners will receive a certificate and an actual pie from McDonald’s.
