WSASAS PROCEEDINGS INSTRUCTIONS TO AUTHORS
Manuscripts that are prepared for publication in the Proceedings of the Western Section, American Society of
Animal Science (vol. 68) must be submitted electronically. Submission information and instructions are
posted on the WSASAS Meeting webpage. A publication charge of $100 must be paid at the time of
submission for proceedings manuscript up to four pages in length. if a proceedings manuscript is over four
pages, the submitting author will be invoiced an additional $25 per page.
General proceedings requirements: With the exceptions noted below, aspects of scientific quality,
headings, abbreviations, table and figure formats, units of measure, and reference citations must follow the
current Journal of Animal Science Instructions to Authors.
NOTE: Previous presentation at a scientific meeting or the use of data in field-day reports or similar
documents, including press publications or postings to personal or departmental websites, do not preclude
the publication of such data in JAS. However, abstracts, proceedings papers, field-day reports, or similar
presentations that are expanded to produce full-length manuscripts should be referenced and cited in the
corresponding JAS manuscript(s).
Manuscripts must be prepared and submitted in the final publication format. Manuscripts must be submitted
in PDF format, no other file types will be accepted. Manuscripts should not exceed 4 pages. However, 1
additional page may be added at the end (i.e., after the LITERATURE CITED) for tables and figures only.
A Sample WSASAS Proceedings is available on the WSASAS Meeting website under the Proceedings
Instructions to Authors tab. Authors are encouraged to study this example.
Graduate Student Paper Competition manuscripts must include an IMPLICATION section following
the DISCUSSION; this is not required for other manuscripts. This section should explain in 1,000 characters
(including spaces) or less and without abbreviations, acronyms, or citations what the results imply for animal
production and (or) biology.
Undergraduate Student Poster Competitors do not need to to submit a proceedings, but must submit an
abstract not to exceed 400 words in length.
Invited manuscripts, such as Symposia, Distinguished Service Award, and Young Scholar Recognition
Program, are not restricted to the 4-page limit. Page limits are determined each year by the responsible
committee. Committee chairs will inform invited authors of the page limit.
Exceeding the page limit, use of incorrect style and form, and(or) excessive typographical and(or)
grammatical errors may result in rejection of manuscripts. After reading these instructions, if you have any

Proceedings layout:
Page restrictions: Use 8.5-inch x 11-inch paper layout with a one-column format and Times New Roman
font set at 10 points. For title page and table footnotes, use Times New Roman font set at 9 points.
Margins: Set left, right and bottom margins at 0.75 inches and the top margin at 0.5 inches.
Page layout: Beginning on the first line of the first page, add the following words centered on the page:

Double space down and add the following information centered on the page:

Double space down and add the manuscript title in bold type letters and centered on the page.
Only the first word and proper nouns should be capitalized.
Double space down and add the author name(s) in bold type and centered on the page; use authors’ initials,
not full first names.
Single space down and add the affiliation(s) of the author(s) in normal type and centered on the page. The
first letter of all words should be capitalized except for prepositions and articles. Affiliation and
acknowledgement footnotes must conform to the Journal of Animal Science style and form (see “Title page”
in the Journal of Animal Science Instructions to Authors).
Double space down and begin the 1-column format of the manuscript. All subsequent pages should begin
with the text positioned 0.5 inches from the top.
Columns: Columns of text should be of equal size, spaced 0.3 inches apart, and right and left (i.e., full)
justified.
Abstract: The left column of the first page should start with the word ABSTRACT (all capitals, bold type,
flush against the left margin) followed by a colon. The abstract consists of no more than 400 words in 1
paragraph and summarizes the pertinent results (with statistical evidence; i.e., P-values) in a brief but
understandable form, beginning with a clear statement of the objective and ending with the conclusions, with
no references cited. Abbreviations in the abstract that are not standard Journal of Animal Science
abbreviations must be defined at first use.
Key words: On a separate line (single space down) at the end of the abstract, add Key words (capitalize Key
only, bold type, flush against the left margin) followed by a colon. Include up to 6 keywords, in alphabetical
order.
Acknowledgements and author footnotes: At the bottom of the left column, separated by a solid line divider,
include footnoted title acknowledgements and author correspondence information.
Body of the Manuscript: The body of the manuscript should include the INTRODUCTION, MATERIALS
AND METHODS, RESULTS, DISCUSSION, and LITERATURE CITED (headings should be all
capitals, bold type, centered on the column). Authors may combine the RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
sections and may include an IMPLICATIONS section at the end of the DISCUSSION. The content of
these sections must adhere to the Journal of Animal Science Instructions to Authors.
Tables and Figures: Tables and figures may be incorporated within the column format of the manuscript text
or included separately after the Literature Cited. All tables and figures must conform to the Journal of
Animal Science Instructions to Authors, with margins set as described above. Tables, titles and figure
captions should stand-alone. Additional instructions and tutorials on how to prepare tables and figures can be
found on the Journal of Animal Science website.
