Enbridge’s pipelines
through Michigan
Line 5 645-mile pipeline carrying
light crude from Superior, Wis.
to Sarnia, Ontario.
Line 6B
A
Line 5, originating in Superior, Wis.,
enters Michigan near Ironwood,
moving up to 540,000 barrels
per day (bpd) of light crude oil, light
synthetic crude oil, and natural
gas liquids (NGLs), including
propane, to and through the state.
293-mile pipeline (235 miles
in Michigan) carrying medium
and heavy crude oil from
Griffith, Ind. to Marysville, Mich.
Line 6B was originally
constructed in 1969. As of
October 1, 2014, Enbridge
had fully replaced the Line 6B
pipeline. Most of the new
pipeline was installed
adjacent to existing segments
(between Lake County, Ind.
and Marysville, Mich.).
C
B
Up to 14,000 bpd of
Michigan-produced U.S.
high sweet crude oil enter
Line 5, and are transported
to regional refineries,
including Marathon’s
Detroit refinery.
E
A
About 30 percent of the
volume carried by Line 5—
that’s approximately
35,000 bpd—is transported
to our Marysville pumping
station, and delivered from
there by a third-party
pipeline to Marathon’s
Detroit refinery, as well
as refineries in Ohio.

are delivered to facilities

Quick facts
on Line 5
• Enbridge supplies the vast majority
of crude oil to Marathon’s refinery
in Detroit, with Line 5 acting as
a primary conduit. Regional
refineries turn this essential
feedstock into gas, diesel, jet fuel,
and other refined products
F
Line
79
Line
17
• Line 5 helps to ensure a stable,
secure supply of North American
light crude, keeping prices down
at the pump
• To date, Line 5 has carried about
80 million barrels of Michiganbased light crude to market
The remainder of light crude
oil and NGLs on Line 5
are delivered to regional
refineries in Ontario,
Canada, with those refined
products also providing
benefits to Michigan
consumers and industry.
• Line 5 does not carry, and has
never carried, heavy crude
• Without Line 5, the Michigan
economy would lose about
56,000 bpd of available light
crude oil, and 15,000 bpd
of available propane
