Seasonal repairs help maintain home’s value
MCKEAN COUNTY – Winter can be tough on a home, causing seasonal damage that should be
addressed in the warmer weather, according to Mary Brzenski, president of the McKean County
Association of Realtors.
“It’s important to do an assessment of your home after the snow melts and the temperatures begin
to rise,” Brzenski. “Sometimes, the damage isn’t immediately visible without a close inspection.”
Brzenski recommends a top-down approach. “Inspect the roof for loose or missing shingles, as well
as the chimney, to avoid future leaks,” she says. “It’s also important to clean and repair gutters,
removing debris and making sure they’re still attached. This can also allow water to seep into your
home.”
Take time to carefully inspect the home’s siding, which may have come away from the home. Also,
look at windows and doors to insure there’s a seal to ensure it’s watertight.
“People often avoid patching cracks in sidewalks and driveways,” Brzenski said. “But repairing
cracks can help keep water out and prevent further damage.”
“Making needed repairs helps owners to enjoy their property more and it maintains a property that’s
attractive to future buyers,” she added.
