Wed 4 Nov / 7.30pm

It is six years after Culloden.
The King’s army is in the
Highlands looking for Jacobites.
Any man, woman or child found
wounded or owning weapons
is put to the end of a bayonet or
rope, or burnt alive in their home.
Clan is set against clan, church
against church, country against
country. The carrying of weapons,
the wearing of tartan, the playing
of bagpipes are all banned. Young
David Balfour finds himself at the
very heart of this world when he is
kidnapped by his uncle.

The Strange Case of Jekyll and Hyde
By Robert Louis Stevenson
Adapted by Lucien MacDougall
and Benedicte Seierup
Tue 3 Nov / 7.15pm
Wed 4 Nov / 7.15pm
Thu 5 Nov / 2pm & 7.15pm
Fri 6 Nov / 2pm & 7.15pm
My devil had long been caged,
he came out roaring... Instantly
the spirit of hell awoke in me
and raged...
Robert Louis Stevenson’s Jekyll
and Hyde was conceived in
a feverish nightmare. What
begins as a detective fiction
transmogrifies into a classic
gothic horror story. Inexplicable
events, sudden eruptions
of violence, secrecy and
addiction make up the frenzied,
disordered and dreamlike world
of what was originally published
as a ‘shilling shocker’.
This story of a reputable doctor’s
strange relationship with the
‘damnable’ Hyde and the ensuing
hunt for a killer is a chilling
exploration of humanity’s basest
capacity for evil.
This new version of the story,
adapted by Lucien MacDougall
and Benedicte Seierup and
devised by the ensemble, offers
a fresh view of Stevenson’s dark
psychological fantasy for our
times.

This season, we are delighted to introduce our very first relaxed
performance at RCS.
Slight adjustments to the performance can make a huge difference
to audience members’ comfort and enjoyment throughout a
relaxed performance.
For example, changes could include having more light in the
auditorium and less intense lighting and sound effects during the
performance. Relaxed performances also have a more accepting
attitude to audience noise and allow freedom of movement in and
out of the auditorium as needed during the show.
For more information on Relaxed Performances please
contact the Box Office.

The Tempest
By William Shakespeare
Tue 8 Dec / 7.30pm
Wed 9 Dec / 2pm & 7.30pm
Thu 10 Dec / 2pm & 7.30pm
The Tempest is Shakespeare’s
swansong, a bewitching,
mysterious yet witty tale, which is
by turns both beautiful and cruel.
Exiled Duke Prospero inflicts
revenge on his evil usurpers by
conjuring up a magical storm that
shipwrecks them on his island.
This is a portrait of a wronged,
tortured man who is in some
ways no better than those he
seeks to be revenged upon.
But ultimately good triumphs
over evil. The wrong-doers are
punished, happiness is secured
for the next generation, and, in
the end, peace is found through
reconciliation.

Thu 14 Jan / 2.30pm & 7.30pm
Fri 15 Jan / 2.30pm & 7.30pm

“These violent delights have violent ends
And in their triumph die like fire and powder
Which as they kiss consume.” Act 2, Scene 6
On the eve of a brutal street fight
between their rival families,
Romeo meets Juliet and they fall
in love. With the help of a priest
they get married in secret. But
when Juliet flouts her family’s will
and Romeo avenges the death of
his cousin, the teenagers find their
plans for future happiness cruelly
destroyed and their romance
turns to tragedy.
This is a sharp-edged
contemporary vision of this
classic tale for a new generation
of young lovers.

Hilary Rosin:
Inspiring friendship
through music
Using the power of music to
connect across age-groups and
across generations was one of
Hilary Rosin’s lifelong pleasures
and special talents. A pianist
from the age of four, it was just
seven years later that she started
passing on her skills in the
most practical way possible…by
teaching other children how to
play. At just 11 Hilary had found
her vocation and for the next six
decades countless children and
families across the south side of
Glasgow came to know Hilary as
an inspiring, engaging teacher
and her home as a place of great
warmth and adventure where, at
the heart of it, was always Hilary
and her love of music.
Book now rcs.ac.uk/boxoffice 0141 332 5057
Through her infectious
enthusiasm and skilful teaching,
Hilary Rosin brought generations
of young people and their
families together, creating
lifelong memories. Practice
was rewarded by her generous
encouragement and the warm
applause of friends at the special
performances she arranged.
On noteworthy days such as the
Annual Pupil Concert (which
took place in the packed front
room of her Giffnock home)
hundreds of Smartie-topped fairy
cakes, lovingly baked by Hilary
and her pupils, were served to
proud parents, grandparents and
friends adding beautifully to the
real sense of occasion.
There is no doubt that Hilary
possessed impressive musical
talent – she was a Fellow and
Honorary Member of London’s
Victoria College of Music.
She was also a regular and
enthusiastic supporter of the
Royal Conservatoire of Scotland
and its students, some of whom
she had nurtured from early
years and had encouraged to
apply to study here.
But what made her the special
‘gracious lady’, as she was widely
and affectionately known, was
the enduring passion with which
she generously and selflessly
shared her love of music.
Hilary Rosin inspired so many
to make music an active and
enriching part of their everyday
lives, and what better way to
continue to celebrate her life
and achievements than through
gathering together for coffee and
in friendship to savour beautiful
music together?

The Hilary Rosin
Coffee Concert Series
This autumn, the composer that threads through each of the
programmes is Robert Schumann, the ultimate Romantic composer
– both gifted and conflicted. A genius across all genres, his chamber
music for piano, strings and voice is celebrated over this month of
concerts featuring the most talented musicians in Scotland.
The ticket price includes coffee and cake after the concert,

Caroline Bowditch presents
her intimate and enticing show
exploring the life, loves and
legacy of painter Frida Kahlo
(1907-1954), exposing littleknown facts about the infamous
woman, remembered for her art.
Falling in love with Frida is the
reclaiming of a disabled artist, a
love like obsession, an enquiry
into how we shape what we are
remembered for. Affinities and
parallels are drawn and the tale
of ‘the great concealer’ is skilfully
revealed through powerful yet
fragile bodies.

‘You have a plan, and then you
don’t. You have a dream, and
then you wake up. You fall in
love, and your heart gets broken.
The question is: do you pick up
the pieces and try again?’
Plan B for Utopia is a playful
dance theatre work by Dundeebased company Joan Clevillé
Dance. Charismatic performers
Solène Weinachter (Scottish
Dance Theatre, Gecko) and John
Kendall (balletLORENT) explore
the notion of utopia and the role
that imagination and creativity
can play as a driving force for
change in our personal and
collective lives.
