After nearly 25 years of service to the community, East Metro Women’s
Council has changed its name to Solid Ground. This exciting change was
approved by the Board of Directors in December of 2012 and was made to
better convey our work of helping families build strong foundations and
move forward in their lives.
So, what does it mean to have a strong foundation?
A strong foundation means that children attend school and are
ready to learn. Solid Ground directed additional resources in 2012 to
support on-site preschool activities and partnerships with early childhood
learning providers in the community. The attention our volunteer tutors
provide not only helps our students work at grade level, it also teaches
them that school is important. The time that children and youth spend at
Solid Ground is a turning point in their lives, where they realize that they
can succeed and that learning is fun!
A strong foundation means good mental, chemical and physical
health. That’s why Solid Ground provided weekly Dialectical Behavior
Therapy groups to help our residents learn to manage their emotions and
use healthy coping skills, despite all of the trauma they’ve experienced. It’s
also why we offered nationally recognized parenting education programs
that help parents understand child development and the importance of
routine and consistency in a loving environment; something that’s often
been missing because of all of the transition families have been through.
A strong foundation means the ability to support yourself and
your family. That’s why Solid Ground implemented a new Employment
Mentor program in 2012 that uses skilled volunteers to provide guidance
and support to our job seekers, and to show our parents that someone
believes in them and their success.
And lastly, a strong foundation means having a safe, affordable
place to live. That’s why Solid Ground launched the HomeSafe program
in late 2012, a new partnership with Tubman and St. Andrew’s Community
Resource Center to move families quickly out of shelter and into housing in
suburban Ramsey and Washington County.
All of these programs and services are possible because of your generosity.
Like a construction crew that helps rebuild a home’s foundation, you are
part of the crew that lifts families up and helps them build the strong
foundation they need for long-term stability and success. On behalf of the

HOUSING
Laquana’s Story
Laquana is the mother of
3 boys. After her husband
moved out of their home,
she was still making ends
meet, until one day when
her oldest son was attacked
on the way to school. To
get her family out of harm’s
way, Laquana knew she
had to move, even though it
meant giving up a good job.
Laquana and her sons
spent some time living
with family, but that only
lasted so long. She was
working two part-time jobs
and they were homeless.
That’s when she found Solid
Ground.
“The Home Again program
helped me to pay my rent
while I worked to move
ahead with my life. Pam,
my Family Advocate,
supported me.
“Now, I work full-time
close to my home. I have
a car. I’m able to pay my
own rent. I can pay my
bills on my own. My boys
are doing well in school….
Solid Ground was there for
me when I needed them,
and I hope to be able to
give back some day. When
somebody helps you, you
help somebody else. It’s a
circle.”

SUPPORT FOR
PARENTS
Janaine’s Story
Janaine is 24 years old
and the mother of 4
small children. She ran
away from home when
she was 16 to flee abuse
and over the next 7 years
was homeless 5 different
times.
Janaine and her kids
moved into East Metro
Place transitional housing
in May 2012. Janaine
has completed budgeting,
tenant training, computer
workshops, Dialectical
Behavior Therapy, and
parenting classes. She
also recently completed
her GED, is working 30
hours per week at her new
job, and is taking her first
classes towards a degree
in culinary arts.

moving forward.

this not just for myself,
but also for my kids. I
want them to see that even
though it isn’t always easy,
that you can do it. I want
to see my kids go down
the right path and finish
school and go to college.
I’m working hard, and it’s
all coming together.”

SUPPORT FOR KIDS
The Next Generation
Research has shown that
housing instability is a
primary factor in poor
school performance. To
help the children at East
Metro Place perform at
grade level, Solid Ground
offers the Learning &
Enrichment Program,
an after-school tutoring
program for K-8th grade
students. In 2012, over 90
volunteers provided 1,317
hours of tutoring to our
students.
Although the primary
focus of tutoring is to
help children improve
their reading and math
skills, the impact of the
program is much greater.
The consistency, attention
and warmth that a tutor
shows the students helps
children know that there
are kind and helpful adults
in the community who
care about them and their
success.
From completing their
homework to improving
their grades to being
named “Student of the
Month,” our kids are
accomplishing great
things! With the stability
of Solid Ground housing,
and the support from their
tutors and the community,
our kids can break they
cycle of homelessness
and poverty for the next
generation.

2012 Volunteer of the
Year for his outstanding
service. In his 5 years of
volunteering with Solid
Ground, he has served
as our “handyman”:
assembling beds and cribs
for residents, repairing
and moving furniture,
and doing maintenance
projects both for residents
and in the office. This
year Todd helped with
a major overhaul of our
donations room, building
a new shelving system
to help with storage.
