IB 11 Summer Reading 2015 for IB English and IB History If you have questions about the assignments below, please contact Mrs. Hamley [email protected] or mhamley@hcsstudents.net or Mr. Windle at [email protected] or dwindle@hcsstudents.net IB ENGLISH 11 Only: Dramatic Monologue from Outliers by Malcom Gladwell, the HHS One School, One Book. ● You will have a variety of group and individual oral presentations as part of your IB English 11 coursework, so we will be using your One School summer reading book as practice for oral presentations. ● As you read Outliers , pay particularly close attention to scenes designed to create an emotional response. Think about how those scenes characterize an important person, focus on a key symbol, or portray a major theme. If you choose a scene that contains more than one character, be sure to make a clear distinction between the characters during your presentation. ● Prepare dramatic interpretation of your chosen character or scene. (approx 3 minutes) o For a dramatic interpretation, you may adapt a scene with dialogue into a monologue or you may add dialogue to a scene; just be sure to maintain the overall tone and idea of the novel throughout your modifications. o You will be allowed to have note cards with you to present this dramatic interpretation, but you may not read the scene; you have to be familiar enough with the scene to be dramatic (project voice, make eye contact, etc.). Consider having a prop or a costume piece to enhance your presentation. o I will post videos of two of the best dramatic interpretations from last fall on Edmodo for you to see as an example. ● Follow your dramatic interpretation with a 23 minute explanation that includes insightful analysis considering questions like the following: Why did you choose this scene? What is it about the scene or character that really resonated with you? In what way does this scene impact the entire book as a whole? How does this scene convey a key theme? ● On the first day of school, you will turn in a typed copy of your dramatic interpretation scene and explanation. This script of scene and explanation will allow me to follow along with your presentation and evaluate your planning and analysis. I will not expect you to have memorized it all wordforword. Supervised Writing: Sometime during the first full week of school, Mrs. Hamley will provide for 3 writing prompts relevant to text One Summer. You will choose one of the prompts that you could develop into a future 12001500 word essay. In a single class period (with text at hand for reference), you will brainstorm and draft ideas for that essay. We will complete Supervised Writing assignments for each of the IB World Literature texts that we will cover during 1st semester, so this assignment will be used as a practice. Page 3 of 3
